No-Flair FFBE is back?
I am NOT the creator but I’m going to assume AI was used to make this. Has anyone tried it out?

Like many of you I've been playing and loving Resonance, you could even say it resonated with me! But it has made me very sad again that FFBE is gone.
First, to be abundantly clear: if you hate AI/LLMs, this post is not for you. I wrote this entire post by hand, but it speaks to things I accomplished almost exclusively using AI. With that out of the way...
A lot of open source projects out there that have done some incredible work already (the Luminest work in particular is fantastic). For me though, the memorial version of the game doesn't quite recapture the magic. The barren home screen feels so lonely compared to the always chaotic, busy one I remember. I'd also like to see gacha working again with limited Lapis quantities, explorations, the world map and not have all units and banners available from the get go. In a sense, a 'progression server' where things unlock on a similar (slightly condensed) timeline as compared to the real thing, minus the dangerous RMT temptation that was Lapis.
To really control stuff like this, the Memorial client itself is just too constrained. That's what inspired my idea to try rewriting the entire game client. But that means figuring out how to replicate really complicated things like damage calculations, monster scripts, sprites and animations, and so on. For that reason, my idea started out fully expecting failure because I assumed it would be too hard. But in just a couple of days it's gone from just seeing if it's remotely possible to seeing some real potential here.
I wanted to share a video of how the new game client looks today. It runs entirely in the browser, so there is no need to install an APK or IPA, and you can play on desktop if you want as well. Since we control the client, I'm able to add QoL things for desktop players, like pressing 1-6 on the keyboard to attack instead of having to manually click. I'm also revisiting how content gets delivered to the game, seeing if modern compression algorithms can reduce the rather large footprint of required downloads and also loading them as-needed instead of being a massive up-front gate.
Couple of important things to note here: - zero interest in making any money from this - I am not likely going to make this work public, ever, especially because of how aggressive square enix has gone after fan projects in the past. Plus it's quite untenable to cover hosting costs at even a fraction of the scale that the og game had, let alone deal with cheating and all that. - What I have considered is creating a small, private community of folks who just love the ever-loving crap out of this game and want to relive the 2016-NV GL glory days one more time (but without the predatory bank-draining component). The server would launch with a 2016-esque set of content and then run banners with a goal of following the progression of the original game (perhaps cutting down on some of the time between banners). Instead of buying lapis for real money, I would boost what you get from doing the story progression & have generous daily login bonuses + weekly automatic handouts you can pull with. - I've also been pondering some kind of unit trading system where people could put up extra units they don't need for trade, since there is no concept of RMT 'whales' anymore. Being able to convert unneeded units back into tickets or lapis is an option. Having the option to build that is the kind of power we have with rewriting the client, btw. - A big part of the content just doesn't exist in the available public dumps, especially for timed / seasonal events. This means piecing together some of that with youtube 'lets play' videos and FFBE Wiki content. AI has shown real promise here and I'm convinced that we're now at the point where it could make a compelling replica from a lets play video alone.
Anyway. I've uploaded a video you can watch that shows the browser client as it exists today. It shows the tail end of the Kolobos Marsh exploration, a bit of the classic world map, a Gacha pull, unit selection including working equipment and items, etc. You might notice that some things do not exactly match your memories, and that there are some bugs, like Rain' auto-regen consuming his turn. That's because it's all been recreated by hand (with a ton of help from AI). So it being rough around the edges is expected. I have a big backlog of things to fix, but it's all fixable and just a matter of time. I'm probably within a few weeks of having a playable 'FFBE circa 2016'.
My excitement for this is obviously high, but I am also definitely struggling with the potential for legal issues, so just a note in case someone from the Square Enix legal team ends up reading this post: If this idea is a non-starter from your perspective, please contact me via DM, and I will happily take the post/video down and never post about it again. No need for a C&D.
At some point I may setup a private discord channel where I can share progress updates and discuss some things like how the unit trading feature above could work.

Loving the game so far only up to the end of chapter 2. I have a question, does vision character themes come up in battle other than the first time you acquire them? Would have been awesome to use their sweeping stagger and keep their theme music!

Given final fantasy resonance success, would anyone be interested in a FFBE remake or more similar gameplay mechanics but a different story? I just fell in love with the FFBE gameplay and (honestly pixel art was amazing!). Just not sure if you all share my thoughts or not?

There is NO way that Emma can yell to the group who's already set sail, which prompts them to somehow hold a conversation.. across the sea. Noise interference aside, there's too much open space for a child's voice to carry in a way they could understand what she said about becoming a knight. This is such a failure on SQEX, making an otherwise very realistic game and not hiring someone to test things like this. Literally unplayable and my day is ruined. I'm going back to Final Fantasy Record Keeper 👿

Loved the game, would lose sleep the night before a unit would come out. Elza ended up being my favorite non ff unit with that insane defense shred. And noel was so damn big people would hide other units behind him.

The Realmscourge, the main villain of War of the Visions AKA Ultima Weapon. I wasnt expecting to see it. This has to be one of the few new additions for Resonance, because we didn't had the Sprite in FFBE (and the other FFBE itineration of Ultima Weapon lies in Paladia, both the Sword and the Monster)

There are naturally some light spoilers in the names of things, although it's not intended to be as spoilery/detailed as a guide. It's more for those who want to make sure they don't miss anything along the way.

You don't have to log in and your progress is saved in your browser (but you can log in and save progress between devices).
You can group, sort, and filter collectibles by chapter (first appearances), region, location, and type. It has quests, tablet shards, magicite, equipment, visions, bosses, active time chats, and more.
The game is still very new, and I may have made some mistakes or missed something, so let me know if you notice anything off. Thank you!

Seeing all the countdown artwork of games throughout the series in celebration of FFRS's release made me want to draw a little something, too. I can't believe that next year, it will have been 10 years since I designed Malphasie and wrote the text for her background story (her birthday is June 23). I'm so excited to play Resonance and see Rain and the gang again. 🥹

Hi,
There is no auto-attack in the game. However, you can achieve the equivalent by holding down the button used to select attacks (the 'A' button on an Xbox controller).
Other solution : https://meowdb.com/db/final-fantasy-resonance/equipment/berserker-ring-12016
Enjoy the game!

Lid's voice makes me want to commit hate crimes. She was my favorite Breaker in the game before 2B came, but maaaaan her voice is grating. 🙁

I'm 5 hours into the game and I can safely say that turn based final fantasy is back. The game has everything I wished for a single player FFBE game, fully voiced characters, Visions in battles, usefull summons, etc. The Feel of the world is there, the OST it's still there, the relationship between characters is there.
As a fan who played since FFBE launch, this game really honored the universe. It's so good to see old sprites and how the story comes together that we only knew through small cutscenes on mobile.
If SE play their cards right, theres another 2 our 3 games by lore alone
The only gripe I have is the battle UI that should've been worked on more, hopefully some mod on PC version fix this
I totally recommend playing the game for the fans out there !

As a lifelong Final Fantasy fanboy, I've dived into pretty much every game since I was a kid.
That said, I do think the timing for Resonance is really interesting and that it could be the most important FF title in recent years.
My main reason for thinking so is that it's being released at the height of the main series' shift toward action, with FF16 going full action game and the Remake trilogy doing its special blend of commands and real-time action. Then on top of that, Resonance seems to be the product of Square's latest endeavors in the pixel graphics area with games like the Octopath Traveler series (different devs, but same leadership I believe) and the Pixel Remaster games.
Looking at the games chronologically, Final Fantasy Resonance really sticks out as a return to a more traditional style game in a modern market, and I can't help but feel that there's a lot more hanging in the balance with this game.
There's also the large implication of what the success of this game could mean for gacha games going forward. There are so many games that could get the second life that FFBE is getting, and I wouldn't mind other FF gachas getting a similar treatment (GIVE ME MOBIUS AND OPERA OMNIA, YOU COWARD).
I see Resonance as a possible beginning to a much longer run of games, and I hope it does well for the sole purpose of getting to see the progress of Rain and Lasswell in a traditional single player Final Fantasy.
The linked video is just the longer version of my thoughts, so check that out of u're so inclined, but Im extremely curious to know everyone else's take here.
Does it feel like this game is getting an extra amount of support from Square for it to be a side game? I don't know if it's just me being more conscious of gaming news or if they actually are pushing the game harder.
