Battling bots and other moderation tools

Hi /r/EnglishSetter!

Bots

As you may have noticed, there has been some pretty awful bot traffic of late. The mod team has added some Auto mod tooling and a bot (¡bots on bots!) to help identify spam bots and repost content. Some tooling may take a minute(s) to clean up the icky bots but they shouldn't be up for hours anymore. We'll be continuing to add or adjust new and current mod tools to help.

Mod help

I want to thank everyone who's been reporting the spam bots. Your vigilance and care for this community is part of what makes this little slice of Reddit so great. Our mod team has two active mods and I think as we've grown we need more hands on deck. If anyone has mod experience, is fairly active on Reddit and wants to help maintain and grow our community, please message me or settersrclowns.

Again, thank you and I personally love seeing every single setter on here (not the bot reposts, bah!) When I'm down, I often come here for a lift. Seeing all the setters are truly gifts.

-mittensblum and the r/EnglishSetter Mod Team

Update

Tweaked some auto moderation config, added some more bot help, and added some more ES coloring flair. If any of the tools seem to be too heavy handed and is generally making it a pain the rump to post, comment, etc—please do message the Mod Team.

Thanks again for all the users going above and beyond to report bots and spam in general. It warms the heart knowing so many care about this community!

Sleeping arrangements

Where does your setter sleep? This guy cries all night if he’s apart from my husband. He is 18 months old so still just a pup. The problem is if we let him sleep in our room he “checks in” with us several times a night with a friendly nose kiss.

Took GCR out to train on birds for the first time. She was phenomenal and handled birds and gunshots better than I could’ve hoped for the first time.

I’m definitely going to have to keep an eye on her and not let her eat any birds. She found recently dead tweety bird and I had pulled it out of her gullet by the legs.

English setter versus French britt

Looking for feedback, we have our first hunting dog narrowed down to French britts or an English setter .

The dog will be hunting CRP in the Midwest for pheasants, it will almost always be the only dog hunting. I prefer a dog that works fairly close as I take older people that don’t move quite as fast hunting with me.

The dog will also be indoors and we like the absolute most chill dog indoors possible.

The dog will have the opportunity to exercise for hours and hours a day.

The setter breeder I’m speaking with has a litter who he says our bred to work closer than your normal setter, and the breeder of the Britney’s says they work fairly close.

Wondered if anybody had an opinion which I realize I’m posting in a setter reddit. But if you have experience with both, I would love the feedback. All my friends have. GSP’s I don’t personally know anybody in my area that has either breed of a dog.

Normal activity level for a 6 months old puppy?

Post image

Hi, we have a 6 months old female setter. We just bought her a tractive device and noticed she is almost 3X more active than similar dogs when it comes to both sex, age, weight and breed. Should we be more stressed about this? We never push her and try to help her relax as well.

Gracie is enjoying her daily sunshine nap. She usually sits on the patio furniture but it rained yesterday and I set the cushions upright in the sun.

Running With My Dog

Post image
43 Upvotes

My 1.25 year old setter is ready to run constantly. I posted a few months ago about her allergies and weight gain issue but she's on Apoquel and doing OK. I made this contraption to allow her to run with me while I bike and it's awesome! She can go at least 15-20 mph and is practically pulling me for the first 20 minutes.

Big question: how far/fast should we go? I don't want to push it but she loves the exercise. Also, can she learn commands like a horse (whoa, gee, haw, etc)?

Recent howling!

Our rescue (3 y.o.) who we’ve had for about 3 months has recently started howling throughout the day when we’re at work. Our neighbor sent us a sweet text, we’re looking into separation anxiety training (he’s howling at nothing) - but wanted to see if anyone else bas experienced this with setters?

When did you get your English Setter neutered?

My vet recommended neutering my English Setter at 6 months old, but a lot of the research I’ve done suggests waiting longer, especially for larger breeds.

I’m a little confused about why my vet would recommend 6 months when so much of what I’ve read suggests waiting until they’re more physically mature. I want to make sure I’m making the best decision for my dog’s long-term health and development.

We don't get out enough hunting with the boys because LIFE, but they do go to a hunting kennel when we travel and get on birds. This is both of them from the past weekend.
