Content Cross-Pollination Basics

Here is a detailed, step-by-step breakdown of how to cross-pollinate dragon fruit flowers using a small brush and a battery-operated hand vacuum.

### Step 1: Prepare Your Supplies (At Dusk)

* **Timing:** Dragon fruit flowers bloom at night and typically open fully late in the evening, remaining receptive until the early morning hours. Plan to start your work once the blooms begin opening.

* **Setup:** Ready your materials on a tray or in a portable kit. You will need a clean, soft-bristled brush, a small collection container (like a glass jar), and a battery-operated hand vacuum fitted with a clean, fine-filter cup or specialized collection tip to catch the fine pollen dust without losing it into the motor.

### Step 2: Collect Pollen from the Donor Flower

* **Vacuum the Dust:** Turn on your battery-operated vacuum and carefully hover the tip right over the brushed anthers. The vacuum will quickly suck up the loose, golden pollen dust into its collection cup, preventing it from falling or blowing away in the night air.

### Step 3: Mix and Prepare Your Pollen Blend

* **Empty the Vacuum:** Carefully remove the filter cup or collection tip from the hand vacuum and empty the gathered pollen into your small container.

* **Combine Varieties:** For optimal hybridization and fruit set, repeat the collection process with other varieties blooming that night. Combine the pollen from blooming varieties in your container and use the brush to gently mix them together.

### Step 4: Apply Pollen to the Receptive Flower

* **Locate the Target:** Find the receptive flower you wish to pollinate. Identify its **stigma**, which is the large, star-like receptive organ extending past the stamens in the center of the bloom.

* **Coat the Stigma:** Dip your soft brush into the mixed pollen container, heavily coating the bristles. Brush a generous amount of the pollen mixture onto the entire surface of the receptive stigma lobes, ensuring comprehensive contact.

### Step 5: After Care & Monitoring Success

* **Flower Wither:** Within 2 to 3 days after a successful pollination session, the large white petals of the flower will naturally begin to wither and dry up.

* **Watch for Swelling:** Keep a close eye on the **ovary** at the absolute base of the flower. If cross-pollination was successful, the ovary will begin to swell and stay green while the flower parts start to yellow and wither. The ovary will eventually develop into a mature, seed-bearing hybrid dragon fruit.

Hello Fellow Dragon Lords,

In an effort to provide the best advice to you in your quest for help with your dragon fruit cultivation, the Mods would like to ask that you follow the format below for your post going forward. It saves everyone time and energy trying to claw the fine details from you. You'll get a more specific and more detailed answer to your question more more quickly.

  1. What is your location?
  2. How much are you watering and how often are you watering?
  3. How much direct sunlight does your plant receive on a daily basis?
  4. What, if any, fertilizers have you used and how much? If you know the NPK ratio, please also mention that.
  5. What is your soil composition?

Just wanted to show off this plant that has been growing at the base of our tree for about ten years now. It doesn't seem to want to stop which is worrisome for the stability of the tree.

Unfortunately, we don't get a ton of fruit from it as we never pollinate on time, pollinate incorrectly, or the flowers are too high.

Soil vs Sun

This is the first one I planted last year when I got into this. Its just a Home Depot special. Its in a premix bag of cactus soil. It seems to be doing well, but the other ones are growing much slower. Do you find the wrong soil mix can be supplemented with the right sunlight? This one hids behind the tree half the day then gets afternoon Sun. Of course it hasn't had a soggy winter yet, which you can see ive (tried to) prepared for. Im in zone 9B in SoCal.

This is my first time growing DF and I'm thinking of doing the tomato trellis for a while until it gets bigger. But should I remove this growth? or can I manage a way around it? Like bend it back or some

I put this dragon fruit branch in my compost thinking it will just die or the turtles will eat it but it's growing some branches. Is there a way to force it to grow some flowers?

What’s happening to my dragon fruit? Why is it developing lesions like this all over? Could this be a result of the long period of very hot weather we had here or is there another cause and if there anything I can do to improve the condition of my plant?

These were on the side of the road for free, I am 99% sure they are dragon fruit. I only have one other dragon fruit plant I got at an estate sale, so I am not super familiar with them.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated! I think I may re-pot, the soil type doesn’t look great, but please correct me if i’m wrong.

Also what causes the brown spot? Is that indicative of burning?

I wanted to let this badboy to grow a couple more days but the neighborhood children wanted to use them as a makeshift ball. I harvest them now rather than regret letting them waste such a fruit

I don’t know what I’m doing anymore. I’ve just been keeping him alive since I left Florida but now I wanna know if I can make him thrive in my apartment . I’m in Virginia now and I’ve been through a whole winter with it and I left him out by my grandparents koi pond for the summer and they didn’t care for him, and I just got him back and nursed him back to health, but he’s a fighter so I’m gonna fight for him 🫶🏼🥺 he sat on the middle console when he was under a foot-long and survived a 16 hr drive over a year ago, I’m not giving up on him now!
One day we will both go back; we don’t enjoy this climate.
If anybody has any suggestions on how to keep this dragon, fruit, cactus healthy, please share. I was gonna propagate it this summer, but I didn’t have it. I was thinking about doing it now and putting it into two separate pots, but I know the best time to do it is probably not this time of year….? however I don’t know if that matters if I’m doing it in a controlled environment indoors anyway right now I have UV light that I got off Walmart on it on the purple setting (red +blue light ) and. One setting the timer for 16 hours a day on a little less than the highest setting even though I really wanna put it on the highest setting because my cactus grew like a weed in South Florida.

A friend dropped this plant off at my house and I didn't know that it produced fruit. It was in rough shape but I watered it for a year or two and it healed and grew. Then one year in flowered and to my surprise it gave me a single juicy dragon fruit. It tasted insanely good. Much better than anyone I had ever tried from the store. So after that I potted it in a much bigger pot and started give it fox farms fertilizer every 3rd water along with my other cactus. It started growing really well and gave me about 15 buds and 10 nice flowers. Then they all turned yellow, squishy and fell of. I was so excited thinking I was going to get 10 fruits especially after I saw how much organic dragon fruit costs. I don't know if that last heat wave messed them up or I didn't give enough water? I noticed my neighbors 4 big plants all fruited many times. Any ideas what went wrong?

TLDR: why did all my flowers turn yellow and fall off without fruiting?

Last year I was able to harvest about 90 dragon fruits from a single plant. My growing conditions are growing alongside a wooden fence, soil is clay and sand, water schedule is whenever I remember, zone 10b. Ive had this dragon for a while now and we rarely water it since its well established.

The fruit is yellow when ripe. I started this about 10 years ago from seeds extracted from yellow dragon fruit from the Chinese market.

Is it possible to identify this plant? If it is a dragonfruit, is there any way to tell if it's self fertile?
