Discussion [Megathread] The Next Season of Doctor Who: Fancasts, Speculation, and Where We Go Next

Let's have a fresh megathread to discuss and speculate about the future of Doctor Who. Place your ideas, fancasts, wish lists, and other hot takes in here:

  • Fancasts: Who is your top pick for the Doctor and their companions and their foes? Do you want unknown actors or established names? Old returning villains and monsters or new ones, and who would play them?
  • Production and crew: Have you noticed someone working on another show that would make a good addition to the team? New directors, writers, cinematographers? New showrunner? Old showrunner? No showrunner? What production/media company would you like distributing it?
  • Plot suggestions: What do you want to see happen after Billie Piper's appearance? Longer theories should probably go into their own separate text posts.

A few quick housekeeping reminders: Standard sub rules still apply. We all know casting and showrunner debates get intensely heated. Please help out by keeping things civil. Instead of engaging with someone being hostile, report them.

Also, no or little leaks discussions. If you're bringing up leaked set photos or anything else, please remember to use spoiler tags.

Standalone posts about fancasts will be removed and redirected here. A fresh megathread will be posted every weekend.

Let's hear what you've got.

Discussion Do you think that the 2005 revival would have still been succesful if they had brought back Paul McGann as the Eight Doctor traumatized by the Time War instead of moving on to 9 with a new actor?

Question How old is Rory compared to Amelia?

I know that 19 year old Kiss-o-gram Amy is with Rory, a nurse, but I don't know how long it takes to become a nurse in the UK. Does anyone know, perhaps from their tombstone, their relative ages?

Who are these people? I get Susan is the doctors granddaughter but who are the others? I feel like I have been thrown into the deep end here.

Starting with the dalek and the thaal is certainly exciting but I really feel as if I am missing some information about everything really, especially considering this is the first episode

Question Is there an actual reason they’re releasing chose to re-release these two episodes in cinemas and not like the 50th, a classic who or adventure in space and time?

Discussion One of the most bizarre things New Who did in it's first series was kill off a Expanded Universe Character, that mostly no one will know

Post image
476 Upvotes

So for context this woman in Aliens of London is an Expanded Universe character. Her name is Muriel Frost and works for UNIT she appeared in the 7th Doctor comics The Mask of Mandrogora and the controversial Evening's Empire comic and an alternative universe version in Final Genesis and then in the 7th Doctor Audio The Fires of Vulcan in the 2000s, this would her last appearance in the EU.

Five years later this Woman in Aliens of London was part of the Alien Experts at Downing Street and part of the UNIT team. Now without prior knowledge, she seems to be just background cannon fodder.

More bizarrely apparently in early drafts, The Doctor was going mention her by name. However on the in-universe UNIT website, she mentioned by name, confirming this is her.

There's a book called Classified! A Confidential 3-D Dossier which seems a Series 1 Dossier that seemly her and UNIT prepared prior to Aliens of London which is even more bizarre.

Anyway, I thought this was just a weird decision imo, why go through all this effort to a kill off a side character at that new audience won't know lol

Discussion Why dose Lumic want to upgrade everyone in to Cybermen?

• Upvotes

Why dose Lumic want to upgrade everyone in to Cybermen?

In The Age of Steel Lumic is dying and is building a body to save himself. He frist uses homeless people as test subjects. He tries to get the president to authorise it which is refused. So Lumic kills him. Something something Davros something Thals rocket something something Kaled dome parrelle.

So why dose Lumic want everyone else to be a Cyberman? He's not charging people for it, he explicity says 'free upgrade'. Mondas was a dying world full of sickly dying people. Pete's world os really inconsistent. Like there is a cerfew and 'New Germany' (which implies the Germans won one of the World Wars - why else Germany not France Italy Romania etc), and a 'president of Britian' and the underground preachers. But the President isn't written to be a dictator and is if anything more sensible than the past 8 real life prime minsters. And Britian seems to be a free market consumerist capitalist country. Pete's world isn't a dying world like Mondas or Skaro.

I guess Lumic as the Cyber Controller says he has taken away pain and greif rage etc. But Lumic isn't written as well intentioned extremist but as a an insane crackpot. If he is an insane crackpot why is he anti emotion?

Its like they can't make up their mind if Lumic is meant to be like Proff Zaroff (ie a nut who wants to blow up the world because sicence) or if like David Banks Cyberleader he thinks feelings and emontions are weaknesses that stop progress and strenght.

Discussion Noticed another repeat actor in the show

I knew I recognized the voice!

I knew Kevin Stoney from his role as Tobias Vaughn in "The Invasion," but I had no idea he also plays Mavic Chen in "The Daleks' Master Plan" until just now as I'm rewatching the serial and it suddenly struck me that his voice sounded very familiar. (He has enough makeup as Mavic Chen that he's physically not recognizable.)

Looking it up, I learned he also has a role in "Revenge of the Cybermen." Definitely didn't recognize him there either given his character's appearance.

(On a tangent, I'm pretty sure Bernard Horsfall holds the record of actor with the most roles in the show, as he ends up playing 4 different characters in the classic era.)

Discussion Why did they stop physically messing up the companions.? Spoiler

• Upvotes

!!!!!SPOILERS!!!!!

DISCLAIMER - THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS IF YOU ARE A NEW WHOVIAN READ AT THE RISK KNOWING IT'LL SPOIL A LOT OF STORIES FOR YOU(SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE AS I IGNORED SPOILER TAGS AND REGRETTED)

I liked how they kept giving companions some extraordinary abilities or altered them physically like messing with their timelines but after the 12th they just became ordinary companions..

  1. Rose Tyler => Bad Wolf, Near Omnipotent

  2. Adam Mitchell => Forehead Data port

  3. Captain Jack Harkness => Immortal

  4. Mickey Smith => Soldier and Leader

  5. Martha Jones => (Nomad storyteller).?

  6. Dona Nobel => Doctor-Donna (Human-Timelord hybrid)

  7. Amelia Williams => Multiple Temporal anomoly survivor, Remembers multiple timelines like the doctor, Doctor's mother-in-law

  8. Rory Williams => 2000+ years old(older than the doctor at one point), Plastic Auton Duplicate, remembers multiple timeline like the doctor, Doctor's father-in-law

  9. River Song => Human/Time Lord hybrid, Child of the TARDIS, Timeless Traveller, gave her lives for the doctor, Doctor's wife

  10. Clara Oswald => Spread Throughout the Doctor's Timeline, Suspended outside of Time

  11. Bill Potts => Cyberman, Liquid Sentience, Faux-Bill_Potts

  12. Nardole => Cyborg

  13. Yasmin Khan => Still Normal physically?

  14. Ryan Sinclair => Still Normal physically?

  15. Graham O'Brien => Still Normal physically?

  16. Dan Lewis => Still Normal physically?

  17. Ruby Sunday => Emotional Snow thing (still not sure what that was)

  18. Belinda Chandra => Reality warped daughter.?

  19. (Rose Nobel => Temporal Metacrisis)[Does 14th count here?)

There are minor changes to the companions phisicalities after the 12th but not like in the Davis or Moffat era where stories used to be so interconnected.. So much foreshadowing, compete and satisfying story conclusions..

Whatever i typed seem like whatever rant but makes sense to me as I am writing it.. What are your opinions.?

So Larry must have known how the angels worked before the finale, right?

The easter egg is quite explicit even without Sally's half of the conversation.

Why didn't he bring up the killer, quantum locked angels at any point earlier?

I feel insane.

Discussion 49th Anniversary of watching my first episode

Post image
20 Upvotes

Well... I misread the calendar, I'm off by two days. It was October 25, not the 27th. But it's still worth mentioning the anniversary of a life-changing moment for me. According to this Doctor Who fan site, October 25, 1977 was the first time I saw DOCTOR WHO, 49 years ago on Buffalo's channel 17. I'd been reading about the show in science fiction reference books, and I had seen the two Peter Cushing "Dalek" movies. Then the local paper ran a photo of a T-Rex that caught my eye with a caption that read something like, "This creature is a Silurian from the show Doctor Who..." Which I knew was a gaff, because I knew what a T-rex was, though I had no idea what a Silurian was. I just *had to* tune in, because of the legendary status DOCTOR WHO had in those TV reference books I found at the library. I slinked into the guest room of my parents' house where the beat up old clunker TV was, and fixed the rabbit ears for the clearest picture. How did my life change? Aside from the discovery of a new fandom? The storytelling on that run of DOCTOR WHO was anarchic. "Anything goes!" was the mandate. Silurians? Reptile people? With T-Rex guard dogs? Super secret underground science labs? A global, "Andromeda Strain"-like plague unleashed? It gave me permission to tell stories, in my infantile first steps as a writer, and later as a Dungeon Master playing D&D, to let slip the dogs of my creativity. 49 years ago this week, my brain was rewired. And I'm deeply thankful for it.

Discussion Odysseus in "The Myth Makers"

After watching this story (reconstruction) at least 5 times, I have to finally admit it: I find Odysseus to be insufferably annoying. His arrogance, his loudness, his demands, his laughing at anything and everything...

I seriously wonder if Odysseus is the reason why the Doctor, 1000+ years later, couldn't stand Robin Hood's laughter either 😂

(Though, interestingly enough, I like Robin Hood and found him to be endearing. While Odysseus makes me prefer nails on a chalkboard over hearing him speak or laugh.)

The 11th and 12th Doctors’ TARDIS exterior had this configuration in the window panels that faintly suggest eyes. Personally, I always loved this little detail. I would have loved for it to have been adopted as a permanent characteristic of the TARDIS exterior, but sadly it seems to have been ditched.

Hello! Is anyone aware of complete copies of these early books anywhere online?? [Edit: list updated.]

I'm aware that reproductions of some of these have been published in recent years (eg), so if anyone could put me in touch with the producers of those, that would be hugely appreciated!

(Note that, confusingly, there were both Travels in Time and Travels in Space 'Sticker Fun Books', AND a Travels in Space 'Painting Book'.)

Thank you!

Discussion Was this irony intentional or not?

Post image
127 Upvotes

Putting aside the drama of the Second Doctor being forced into regenerate, there’s something hilariously ironic about one of the Time Lords (Chancellor Goth?) admonishing the petulant Doctor for “wasting time.” Was that meant to be a comedic line or did the writers stumble into that irony by accident?

Obviously there’s no way for me to ask the writers themselves what they intended, but either someone does know, or else we can speculate. And as I hinted above, I was curious as to whether this unnamed Time Lord counts as Chancellor Goth, given that the actor came back to play Goth.
