ANNOUNCEMENT Updating Rule 3

Hello /r/Dinosaurs! In the past we’ve received community feedback stating that our guidelines for what kinds of posts are and aren’t considered low effort were not clear enough, and that subreddit members were often confused or surprised at their posts being removed. To fix this confusion, we’ve overhauled Rule 3 in a way that should make our quality guidelines crystal clear. You can find the updated guidelines here:

TLDR; Certain types of memes which are considered low-effort are banned, and most post types will now be required to have body text. We will be using Automoderator to enforce body text requirements.

If you have any feedback, please feel free to share it by leaving a comment. Otherwise, happy posting!

NEWS We have A New 7 meter long Megaraptorid from Patagonia !

The megaraptorids are a clade of medium- to large-sized theropods that are still relatively poorly known in terms of their morphology, phylogenetic relationships, macroevolutionary trends, and biogeographic dispersal patterns.

A representative of the family Megaraptoridae, Rinconraptor pipoae gen. et sp. nov., which is characterized by an ectepicondyle being positioned far from the distal end of the humerus, cnemial crest, and medial condyle of the tibia with a subquadrangular shape, presence of an anterodistal ridge on the humerus, and incisura tibialis forming a right angle.

Furthermore, we describe other skeletal remains of several indeterminate specimens of the same clade, all recovered from the Cerro Overo-La Invernada area (Neuquén Basin). Phylogenetic analyses support the existence of a monophyletic subclade of South American megaraptorids.

The analysis of caudal vertebrae morphology reinforces the hypothesis of a phylogenetic relationship and shared morphological patterns between megaraptorans and tyrannosauroids.

The new materials support the evolutionary trend of increasing body size during the Late Cretaceous. The rich terrestrial ecosystem of the Cerro Overo-La Invernada area would have been composed of peirosaurid crocodyliforms, chelid turtles, elasmarian ornithopods, titanosaur sauropods and theropods, such as abelisaurids and megaraptorids, which served as apex predators.

DISCUSSION Did any events seperate the Triassic/Jurassic/Cretaceous and which dinosaurs survived between periods?

• Upvotes

This is a topic which I’m sure has been asked but I’m interested in and can generate discussion.

At a basic level I’ve heard know that there are no stegausaurs in the Cretaceous, and apparently almost every sauropod by the late Cretaceous was a titanosaur.

Did any intermediate extinction events happen or is it just a case that speciation naturally means that the snapshot of dinosaurs we associate with a particular period would naturally evolve or go extinct in the unfathomable timeline of the Mesozoic?

DISCUSSION Can we all agree that Ceratosaurus is an underrated dinosaur?

He's very often being overshadowed by Allosaurus or any other bigger theropods, I personally love him and he's my favorite dino.

Recommend media where Ceratosaurus has the spotlight if you want please:)

First time posting here, kinda nervous.

ARTICLE Paleontologists Reconstruct Cretaceous Bird in Remarkable Detail

Thumbnail

The paper: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2950475926000110

Concornis lacustris lived in what is now Europe approximately 125 million years ago (Early Cretaceous epoch). The species belonged to Enantiornithes, an extinct group of birds that flourished during the Cretaceous but disappeared in the mass extinction that killed off the non-avian dinosaurs 66 million years ago.

Its fossil, found at the site of Las Hoyas in Cuenca, Spain, and initially described in 1992, has long been a source of information for paleontologists.

“The holotype of Concornis lacustris provided fundamental anatomical data for understanding the evolution of small Mesozoic birds,” said Universidad Complutense de Madrid’s Dr. Víctor Peco and Dr. Sergio Nebreda, who is affiliated with Johns Hopkins University, the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

“Furthermore, this species has been instrumental in detailing the active flight capabilities of these birds, revealing key aspects of their behavior and paleobiology.” In their new paper, the researchers describe the creation of the first life-size, three-dimensional reconstruction of Concornis lacustris.

They worked the way anatomists and paleoartists often do, starting with the skeleton and adding layers of muscle and skin. They built a digital model in the software Blender, based on published drawings and photographs of the fossil. Because the skull and parts of the skeleton are missing, they borrowed from other early birds, including a well-preserved skull from Brazil and a skull from Las Hoyas itself.

The digital model was then 3D-printed in plastic, covered with sculpted epoxy putty and finished with oil paint.

I’ve been to Walmart a couple times, and I’ve seen little to none of these things in Walmart’s nature world/savage display boxes with dinosaurs, so I need to know, have you seen these in those display boxes, and do you have photos?

I made these in a vehicle building game called trailmakers and they take probably 10 hours to build and animate each. The tyrannosaurus can run around 20mph, carcharodontosaurus can run 30mph and spinosaurus around 15mph.

I saw the other glowy dinosaur costume, and had to post my own!

This is my actual costume from a Halloween rave I went to. I won the costume contest too! The hoodie and tail were purchased on Etsy. The gloves belonged to a raver friend of mine, and the shoes were Electric Styles.

It's still my favorite Halloween costume of all time.

HELP ME FIND/ID Is there anywhere online that has detailed images of dinosaur skeletons?

I'm looking to start a journal where I draw the skull of a dinosaur with some basic info attached. Pretty much is there anywhere online that has a good collection of dinosaur skeletons images or models? I'm fine to just look up each species individually if there isn't but it would be great if there was just one source I could keep coming back to.

DISCUSSION Question about Taxonomy and the nature of referrals?

So I've always heard that in paleontology there's a type specimen that forms the foundation of the genus. If material is going to be referred to the genus it should ideally overlap with the holotype.

But because of this it's leaving me thinking "are the many dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures who have material referred to them that doesn't overlap with the holotype invalid or wastebasket taxons"

I mean take titanis for example. It's a giant terror bird and the holotype is a piece of leg bone. Many remains such as vertebrae toe bones and skull elements have been referred to it. They come from quarries within the same state, belong to Giant phorusrhacidae, and date the same time. But if they don't overlap with the holotype is that a waste basket?

And so it's just driving me crazy cuz a lot of my favorite prehistoric creatures have a taxonomic situation just like this and so now it's making me think and debate whether they might be wastebasket tacs or not.

Are referrals like this fine as long as there's a good amount of Bio stratographic or biogeographical circumstances to support it? Should most referrals of the nature I've described be accepted but always held with small amounts of skepticism?

NEWS New Dinosaur Discovery ! It is from Utah

Raleigh could be at the forefront of the discovery of a new species of dinosaur, as crews delivered the skeleton of a 75-million-year-old dinosaur to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences Wednesday.

“We’re thrilled, we’re thrilled, and everything went really well,” said Lindsay Zanno, the museum’s head of paleontology.

Paleontologists will research the skeleton inside the museum’s State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU) Dino Lab.

“Really exciting moment for us. We brought in the coiled up skeleton of probably a new species of dinosaur,” Zanno explained.

Visitors will get an opportunity to visit the Dino Lab, which is part of the museum’s free admission, to see researchers work on the new dinosaur, as well as others.

“It’s just following along with what we built here at the North Carolina museum a few years ago when we opened the new dino lab.

We did that to study the dueling dinosaurs, which everyone knows and loves, but this is sort of the next phase of what’s going to take place at the museum,” said Zanno.

Zanno says the dinosaur would have looked like a large ostrich with a long tail. A scientist that collaborates with the museum discovered the skeleton in southern Utah.

DISCUSSION Biggest Tree Climbing Glider?

Hello Dinosaur enthusiasts! I was wondering if you could assist this casual with a question. What were some of the biggest tree climbing and gliding dinosaurs?

I am specifically looking for gliding, not powered flight. I know Microraptor and archaeopteryx ate insects, I am wondering if there were any big enough to eat baby dinosaurs or fish. Or if any were herbivores.

Also still having a decent running speed on ground would be nice.

So is there a species that fits this, or are Microraptor and archaeopteryx the best I'm gonna get?

GAMES/MODELS/TOYS I got three new hammond collection figures!

Thumbnail

So At target I found the mutadon and a bunch of hypsis(which was sad because the only figure i did have was hypsi) so I decided to pick it up from there.

A day later i went to another store in a mall, saw they had a tiny jurassic section and low and behold they had multiple hammond collection figures, indominus rex, hypsi, rebirth dilo,Mussaurus and ornitholestes. Indom was too expensive and rebirth dilo is still being sold at target, but the other two i grabbed without hesitation.

Mutadon is a nice figure in ways but has some issues. It has a good sculpt and looks accurate enough to the movie one, the swappable wings are a good workaround because fully articulated wings is very hard to do. And the legs articulate super well. It’s two problems are that the claws aren’t painted, idk why this inconsistency happens because they painted the two others in that release line. The other issue is the jaw can’t open that far, for a predator that hunts prey i’d expect its jaw to open wider, the neck is what prevents this but they could’ve put another joint there i feel, the head also can’t move at all by itself which is a shame.

Mussaurus is my favorite in the line. I love its colors and its design is great, i love that we finally have a sauropodamorph. Its articulation is wonderful and the swappable hands are fine but i lost the other ones besides one ornitolestes hand, but for some reason the swapped hands are very lose and fall out easily, idk if its the problem with this specific model or not but the quadropedal hands are much better. I love this goober so much

Ornitholestes is very interesting. It’s design is alright, Idk why it’s even here but welcome! I understood they were going for a “jurracurate” look where it’s feathered but is still not accurate, But sorta just looks like a diet raptor with feathers on it, i wish it got its walking with dinosaurs crest. However it looks much better than the hammond collection raptors, and articulates very well, however it has a bit of an underbite

My ranking of the figures i have is

4.Hypsi(My first figure so it holds a special place in my heart but if it had an articulating jaw it would be better, also it feels like a diet dryo)

3.Mutadon(I got hypsi first due to this not being a real animal, but it’s ok, looks fine, the swappable wings make sense, but non painted claws and limited jaw articulation and the head can’t move by itself)

2.Ornitholestes( this dude is a good small carnivore, and has great articulation, the swappable hands are finicky and i like the origional ones better, i just wish it got a crest)

1.Mussaurus( the goat, i love sauropodamorphs, these dudes are so cool and genuinely happy i found him, sure his face is weird but his colors are wonderful and articulates so well, it didn’t need swappable hands imo, and the four legged ones don’t fall out like the other ones do, overall this was a goated find and can’t wait to find the rebirth dilo)

what do you guys think of these new figures

MOVIES/SERIES/SHOWS May I recommend ya'll a DINOSAUR movie - Introducing...... DINOSAUR ISLAND

Dinosaur island, released in 2014. It involves this dinosaur obsessed kid finding this crystal in his grandma's house which with certain frequencies - transported him to a island full of prehistoric creatures and dinosaurs. The movie uses some generic dinosaurs designs while having original ones too. Like their feathered Trex above. Doesn't look bad, looks kinda cool to me. Heck, they even have feathered Pterosaurs. Cgi is a bit iffy but mostly fine. Ya'll should watch it

HELP ME FIND/ID Trying to find an old "dinosaur making" website.

Back in 2016ish me & my buddies would hop on a website that allowed us to color in, change select parts, and rename various ancient species including dinosaurs/censozoic animals. It was cartoony in style and was around before AI took over. After making the dino it would allow you to take a photo with whataver backdrop you wanted and save directly to your desktop. It was awesome for making quick story OC's. Google is very unhelpful in finding it.
