Software Self Plug - Daily DTNS listener since forever. - A proper e-ink app

Yeah, I used claude, it solved a bunch of my pain points :)

https://casavargas.app/deckle

If you own a Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook or reMarkable, you've hit these:

- You sideload a book and it's second-class. No Enhanced Typesetting, no X-Ray, no Word Wise, no real page numbers, and the cover goes grey the moment the Kindle hits Wi-Fi.

- Every fix is a separate calibre plugin or forum recipe, and they fight each other. The trick that turns on X-Ray breaks the cover on a 2024 Scribe.

- On a Mac, the new Kindles (Scribe, Colorsoft, Paperwhite 2024) are MTP-only, and Android File Transfer is a coin flip.

- RSS on e-ink is a pile of links that opens a browser you don't want to use.

- Your highlights from sideloaded books never show up in Amazon's export.

Deckle fixes all of it in one app. Drop in an EPUB, a Word doc, a PDF or a folder of notes, press Send, and it lands looking like a store book. Every morning it also builds a real newspaper from your town's news, weather, RSS and the links you saved, with a crossword made from yesterday's headlines, and it's on the reader before you're up.

No server, no account, no subscription. It runs on your Mac or PC and lists every network call it makes. GPL-3.

Under the hood: a Rust port of jhowell's kfxlib, tested byte for byte against it; an MTP client written from scratch because macOS doesn't have one; and X-Ray and Word Wise sidecars written directly.

Built with a lot of help from Claude Code; the specs it worked from are in the repo.

I built it because I was tired of keeping five tools in sync to read a book. Tell me what breaks.

Security When the Patch Skips Your Version: What PHP2Shell Cost Governments, and What EOL Adds on Top

At 07:43 UTC on October 21, 2026, Cloudflare saw the first attacks. The fix would not exist for another six hours and seventeen minutes.

By lunchtime in Europe, the Dutch national cybersecurity agency had taken its own website offline. DigiD, MijnOverheid and the Tweede Kamer were dark. Finland's state IT provider had pulled government network services, and France's Interior Ministry had switched off local administrative sites. The cause was a pair of PHP flaws, CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, both rated 9.2 and both allowing code execution without logging in.

This is not an article about how the exploit works. It is about the bill. Part of that bill nobody could have avoided. Part of it was scheduled years ago, with a date printed on php.net. The useful skill is telling the two apart.

Science Mysterious, very bright lights were spotted near Mt. Whitney

Thumbnail sfchronicle.com

Last week in Lone Pine, CA, locals and drivers on Highway 395 were stunned by blinding, high-wattage beams of light shining down from the mountains near Mount Whitney, which turned out to be a nighttime test by the space-mirror startupReflect Orbital. Founded in 2024, the company plans to launch a massive constellation of 50,000 orbiting satellite mirrors to beam "sunlight on demand" to Earth, and collaborated with the China Lake Mountain Rescue group to test whether the lights could aid in nighttime search and rescue operations. While local rescue workers noted it provided an "awe factor" of visibility spanning three miles, they concluded that while it may not revolutionize routine night searches, it could be a "game-changer" for disaster rubble rescues following events like earthquakes.
