Witnessed awful crash in LO - be careful out there!

Yesterday I witnessed a really gnarly crash in Lake Oswego around 3:30 PM. Older guy was coming down a hill towards Iron Mountain and braked too hard on the rainy, painted crosswalk. He lost his back wheel, over corrected, jackknifed his front wheel, and slammed his head into the pavement. I saw that he was not moving so I had another person call 911 while I ran over and made sure he was breathing or if I needed to do any cpr. Luckily he was breathing, but he had suffered a really serious head injury. Super rigid, big gash on the forehead, and unconscious for most of the time I was with him until the paramedics came, but luckily breathing. Saddest part of this is that he was wearing a decent helmet, it just wasn't on properly. Way too loose and sitting on the back of his head and was nowhere near where it needed to be to dampen where his forehead took the hit.

All this to say, please be careful out there in the rain and leaves. And wear your helmet correctly. We all want you to make it home in one piece.

Rain jacket -- pit zips or front zip?

Looking at getting a light weight rain jacket from 3Fulgear for, ehh, light drizzle and mist days, or maybe a quick dash home if it starts raining in earnest. (The 3Fulgear jackets also seem long enough to prevent arse crack rivers) If given the choice between pit zips or a full-length front zip, which would you go for? Any other recommendations?

An idea for the group

Is this possible? Since we're seeing dozens of posts everyday about stolen bikes, can we pin a thread about this or a thread of resources to consider when your bike is stolen? Ideas?

What now?

I was hit by a car Friday night. The driver fled the scene after yelling at me. I provided the police with all the information I could. The SUV was gray/silver, license plate started with a 91. The driver was a black man in his 30-40s. I broke my ankle and a bone in my foot, and I’m experiencing widespread soreness. My bike is completely wrecked, and I won’t be able to work for weeks or even months. I have a 3yo child, and I’m feeling lost on what to do now. Anyone else have an experience like this?

How do you warm up after a chilly long ride that isnt a hot shower?

When I'm riding I feel decently warm and toasty but when I get off and settle in the house my ass and thighs are bricks of ice. Electric blankets take forever to warm me through. Hot showers are the obvi choice but water is expensive and wondering if theres some sort of gadget or method I am not thinking of?

I am tempted to get one of those gooby grow tent sauna contraptions

How do I get my stolen bike out of the thief's apartmentb in NoPo?

UPDATE!! My bike has been returned. I considered all the suggestions offered (thank you!!!) and decided to take a mildly confrontational approach by posting a note by the elevator with a $100 reward offer. Received a call a few hours later and within 30 min, I was reunited with my bike and it feels very good. Honored the reward and didn't make a call to the police.

PLEASE RETURN MY BIKE. IT HAS BEEN TRACKED TO THIS BUILDING. Possessing stolen property is a direct violation of your Section 8 rental agreement. Do not lose your housing over this. No questions and no police. Just call or text me immediately so I can pick up my bike. My dog misses her ride.

(I included a cute pic of my little Chihuahua in a doggy backpack with me stradling the bike. 🙂)

***

My bike was stolen on Thursday 10/22 while I was getting acupuncture at Working Class in Cully. I tracked it through my bike's app to Dawson Park Apartments in North Portland by Legacy Emanuel (Home Forward section 8). I can actually see my bike in the app, taken out into the park at night. I've already deactivated the electric assist, so it's just a very heavy bike at this point. I call non-emergency anytime I see my bike is active... Both the police and I have spoken with the front desk and have asked that they review camera footage. Can't confirm whether they're actually following through.

I mayyyy have gotten into the building and casually walked around each floor to see if the bike was left outside their door because I got a notice a few hours ago that it had been turned on.

My bike is literally hanging out behind one of these closed doors. Any suggestions? It's been registered with project 529 and bike index. https://bikeindex.org/bikes/3536205

New Bike and a Gorgeous Day

Bought a Wilde Rambler from Metropolis and took it for the first ride yesterday. Rides like a dream! First time on a drop bar bike and first time trying clipless. Somehow haven't forgotten to clip out for a light/sign yet (it's coming). Christian at River City was super helpful in getting me set up with shoes, and Archie at Metropolis was amazing in helping me get the perfect bike for me.

For those of you with experience, I’m wondering how long before your flight you arrive to the oversized bag check. And if you have any other tips/considerations? Thanks!

Lost Camera on Tillicum Crossing 🙁

I hope this is okay to post here--not sure what else to do!

At some point on my ride home, the "action pod" to my Insta360 camera fell out of my bag! I'm guessing it happened somewhere on the south side (eastbound) of Tillicum Crossing, but it could've been anywhere along the Clinton St. route to 52nd.

Crossing my fingers that somebody found it? Or can tell me a better way to get all the cyclists out there looking for it for me.

So sad!

edited to add: The action pod is completely useless without the tiny camera, which I still have. I swear I'm not trying to get lucky and get somebody's camera.

Stolen from a private caged off parking lot downtown Portland…. Which means they had to piggy back unnoticed into the unit, hide until the person they snuck behind badged into the building, then escape with the bike…. Pretty impressive… I put a lot of money and work into the stupid bike. RIP, pour one out.

Bike fit for IT Band problems

My wife just learned her knee/hip pain is from an IT Band problem. She will get some physical therapy but after doing a quick google search it looks like the cyclist recommendation is to lower the seat some.

I suspect that we should confirm the bike fit also. She was fine her first year as a beginner mountain biker but she always had her seat too low as it made her feel safer. It was later when she got better and put her seat height at a proper level, and also got a new bike, that the problem started. This is also when we started longer rides. A 3 day trip in Bend is what kicked it all off so it could be overuse and have nothing to do with fit, but I would rather check.

Question is, does a normal bike shop fitter know what to do for this condition? I see some physical therapy places do bike fit so assume they would be best over a bike shop? As there are not bike shops, would they be able to do things like swap stems to get the perfect fit?

Any place in particular we should go to in the Portland metro?

Also, how important is this on a mountain bike? When I look into bike fitting I always see road bikes. And I am not sure modern trail bikes are going to ever get that perfect of a fit. For example, seat tube angles are 3 to 4 degrees steeper then they were a decade ago. So don't see how details like the KOPS would ever be at some "correct" angle.

Bike makers/modders group?

Is there a group for bike makers or modders specific to Portland (or Oregon)? I only know a couple of bike shop owners that make/sell bikes and I missed the Made Bike show twice in a row because I'm not in their loop. I'm more of a hobbyist level (i.e. I don't build frames). Maybe an FB group that show off your own custom bikes or discussion group or insta page of your friend that make bicycles for themselves, etc. Appreciated.

Freezing?

I’ve recently started cycling to work again and I’m curious at what temperature do I need to be careful to watch out for black ice etc?

Edit: I’m biking from 82nd Glisan area to 158th & Airport Way. I’ve been favoring the east on Burnside, north on 148th, east on Airport Way.

I won this in a drawing many years ago and have not found a use for it.

If there's a ton of demand, I'll have a drawing.

Edit: Looks like plenty of interest. I'll do drawing tonight hopefully for a pickup this weekend.

Edit 10/17: 17 entries but only one could win. Congrats to u/OMGWTFBBQUE!
