Sankey charts with no extra context will now be removed under rule 9

Per several requests mods have received and discussions, Sankey charts with no extra context will now be removed under rule 9.

What context is acceptable? Basically a bit like gpa, tier of college, previous internships, stuff that might go in a resume. You can try posting a resume but the bot might remove it per rule 5. If you do post a resume and it's removed message me directly and I'll fix that.

Rant Hearing friends describe their interview processes in other majors is depressing

Seriously, if you don’t talk to people outside of CS, go and do it ASAP because it gives you perspective on the bloodbath that CS is right now.

I have an aerospace engineering friend who got a good internship at a defense company his freshman year, and all they asked him about was the projects on his resume and a couple behavioral questions (Why do you want to work here)

I also have a nursing friend who interned at a hospital last summer (paid, and they call it an externship), and he got asked just behavioral questions.

And btw, this is not to say that these other majors are easy because they are extremely hard.

But when it comes to the hiring process for CS, legit no one would be surprised if the standard for internships 2-3 years down the line is like 7 rounds of 2 hour long technicals, and interns are then expected to show system design proficiency….

😞😞😞

Falsely accused of using AI

I’m freaking out a bit. I submitted an assignment for a CS class last week and got an email from my professor saying that my work was “nearly identical to several other submissions, and also to what Claude produces when prompted with our assignment text.”

The thing is, I’ve already admitted to using AI once in this course (I didn’t read the policy well and thought it was allowed) and got a small punishment for that. So the prof is more inclined to believe I did it again.

The assignment is 100% my own but he has already referred me to an Academic Integrity hearing. The consequences would be a lot more severe. What the fuck do I do

Rant I dont feel like im ever ready for internships

I'm a 3rd yr cs major and I only started to learn how to code last semester. I completely AI'd my classes up until my 3'rd semester, even when i didnt AI them i got pretty decent grades, which looks good on paper until i realized i have no skills.

I'm not a part of any organizations, i dont have any hackathon experience, no research experience or anything relevant to this field. I want to get into web dev so I'm currently learning React but i feel lost. I'm in the middle of doing the Scrimba free React course, and I know that alone isn't even enough to get me a frontend internship. I'm also planning to study backend after this but I know that will take me months. I know I'm super cooked but I'm writing this because I regret not trying harder and slacking off in my first and second year.

Has anyone ever been in the same boat before? Were you able to lock in and find an internship or a job after graduating despite a late start? I'd appreciate any and all kinds of advice

Internship Question Internship Offer Decisions

I got a few SWE intern offers and wanted to know which I should pick (considering likelihood of RO, resume value, experience):

  • AMD (spring and summer - need to do both terms, not sure how flexible they are with that)
  • IBM (summer)
  • Capital One (summer)
  • Coinbase (summer)

Not sure if I should try to do both AMD and something else or stay with one if summer is better.

Others I got my first dev job right after graduation. The company had already rejected me.

I studied control systems engineering and had an internship doing embedded programming. Things were going pretty well until they let me go right before my final year.

Most junior openings I could find in my area were in web development, so I started learning TypeScript instead. I also built a mobile app for my bachelor thesis, which gave me something to actually talk about in interviews.

Then came the interviews.

First company: The initial technical test was literally a Kahoot quiz. I got 26/30, passed the technical interview, and somehow got rejected because my HR evaluation was "below average."

Apparently, I was qualified to write code but not qualified to exist as a person.

Second company: Interviewed me for game development after I'd spent approximately one week learning Unreal Engine. Didn't get the job. Honestly, fair enough.

Third company: Finally, a web development role. Something I'd actually spent months learning.

The interview went reasonably well, or so I thought.

A few weeks later, they called me. I was already imagining my first paycheck.

They rejected me. Over the phone.

But before hanging up, they asked whether I'd still be interested if another position opened up. I was pretty upset, but I said yes.

A few months passed. I finished my thesis and graduated.

Then the same company called again.

They had an opening. I accepted, and I've been working there since. I genuinely enjoy it.

Looking back, I think the most useful things I did were checking what companies around me were actually hiring for, building a project I could explain instead of just following tutorials, and applying even when I didn't feel completely ready.

I'm curious, what's the weirdest interview experience or rejection feedback you've received? Because I'm still trying to figure out how I passed a technical interview and failed at being a human being.

Internship Question Graduate Early with no Internship or Masters?

I am set to finish undergrad this Spring, graduating from Georgia Tech with a >3.5. I have no previous internships. Should I be applying for new grad roles or internships with the idea I go back for a masters next year? I am not crazy ambitious, wondering if you guys think I can get any kind of mid-tier SWE role with a good school but no internships.

Internship Question Waymo SWE internship interview

• Upvotes

Hi guys, I recently got a first round technical for Waymo commercialization SWE intern position. If anyone has any insight on to what kinds of questions Waymo likes to ask interns, please share some knowledge. It’s 45 mins and I’m pretty sure it’s gonna be leetcode/DSA based. I’m only a first year so I haven’t even taken DSA yet so everything I know is self taught so far 😭 I really want this internship so if anyone has any advice I’m all ears. Have a week and a half to prep.

Quant interviews are a different beast

Interviewed at a quant firm for front end web developer intern. Pretty standard right? Python, JavaScript , typescript, maybe some DS? Nah bruh 💀 like five traders join the call, one SWE , a senior PM. Like are we serious??? They start asking me to optimize my solution to a trading system I designed. The trading guys keep coming with custom orders. Then he asks what I know about equities trading and do I trade? Sir uh I’m poor I have no money to trade? 🫪 I lie and say I do. Waiting for rejection now ✌️

Comparing Offers

I am a new grad and I majored in CS. I graduate in 2 months. I have been applying to roles and I have 2 offers.

New grad Software systems engineer at Northrop Grumman in Huntsville Alabama. I am in the process of getting a secret security clearance. Start date is Aug 2027.

Second offer is from IBM as a new grad software engineer in Rochester Minnesota. Start date is late Jan 2027.

Both are equally far from my current location. Both are kind of small cities. Both have similar pay. IBM is slightly more. Which one should I choose? What are the pros and cons? I have heard there are lots of PIP and layoffs at IBM. Which one would be better for my career and long term?

Should I join IBM for 6 months and then afterwards quit and go to Northrop Grumman in August?

Company Question I'm turning 21 and doing a 3-month unpaid web dev internship (HTML, CSS, JS, React), with promised pay afterward. I'm considering a gap year before my master's to gain experience. What should I focus on? Is DSA still useful? I feel like I'm wasting time.

Cloudflare 2026 interns- any return offers?

• Upvotes

Basically the title, did anyone who interned during this summer hear back for RO? My recruiter said they won’t be able to say anything before mid November which is pretty panick-y for me as I graduate in December.

Internship Question Got an NVIDIA System Software Security Intern interview — anyone interviewed for this role before?

Hey everyone, I just got contacted by an NVIDIA recruiter for a System Software Security Intern (Data Center) – Summer 2027 position. I have not given any OA, but I got an email from a recruiter to schedule an interview.

Has anyone interviewed for this role or a similar security/software security internship at NVIDIA before?

Mainly wondering:

  • How many interview rounds did you have?
  • What kind of technical questions did they ask?
  • Was there LeetCode/DSA coding, or was it more security/Python/Linux-related?
  • How much did they focus on the resume and our projects?
  • What topics would you recommend preparing?
  • Anything you wish you knew before interviewing?

The role mentions things like SBOMs, vulnerability management, OSS security, CI/CD, and software supply-chain security, so I'm trying to figure out how deep I should go into those topics.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's interviewed with NVIDIA recently!

Rant Are 99.99% of Masters Degrees in this field extremely predatory?

People say they are cash cow programs, but just how bad are the majority of them?

For example, I know someone who did a “Masters in AI” at this university in hopes of getting a high paying job after graduating, but he’s struggling just as much as before, only this time, he’s down an extra $90k.

As an extension, what makes a masters degree worth it and not predatory?

- Fully paid for stand alone masters are incredibly rare

- Most MSCS programs are insanely expensive

- They seem to barely move the needle for SWE jobs

As a junior seeking guidance from the seniors.

As a student in programming and development, what are the things I absolutely must do or learn to secure a job and build a strong career?

I have less than six months left, so I want to focus on the most important and necessary skills.

If you could share a list of the essential things I should know and work on, I can revisit the topics I already know and learn the ones I’m missing.

And I'm also curious about stuff that would be required in future journey.

I hope seniors guidence.

Company Question google summer 2027 technical rounds

does anyone know if the difficulty of the 2 technicals plays a part into it? i did mine today and the first one (med lvl) had some bugs i solved myself, some i needed help with, couldn't get TC (i was very close but it was inverted apparently...) and the second one (hard lvl) i did it all myself + a follow-up question, i just think i was a bit rambling in the middle and didn't finish my thought process at times. when i asked for feedback he said to ask recruiter so ig ._.

Company Question Google SWE Internship

I recently got an interview invitation for Google's Summer 2027 Master's SWE Internship.

I initially listed December 2027 as my graduation date, but I now plan to graduate in May 2027, because I'm an international student, and due to recent CPT restrictions, I can't use CPT for this internship. My practical option is to graduate in May and use post-completion OPT.

However, Google specifically asked whether I'll be enrolled in Fall 2027. I'm worried that disclosing my May graduation date now might get my interviews canceled.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Does Google allow interns who graduate right before the internship? Should I tell the recruiter now or wait until later?

Got a 45 min IBM Backend Developer Intern Technical Interview coming up. What to prepare?

Hi, I've got a 45 min IBM interview coming up in a few days for the Backend Developer Intern position. I'm a bit confused on what to expect, since the email didn't specify anything.
