Anyone interested in helping mod this subreddit?

I somehow accidentally ended up as mod of this subreddit some time ago but haven't managed to give it the attention it deserves so I thought I would ask this community if there are any maths enthusiasts who might be willing to help out.

You role would include approving new messages / comments that were deemed appropriate for this subreddit.

At the moment everything is pretty casual but if anyone has any advice on how to run a community like this I am open to suggestions.

If so send me a message via mod mail

Math IRC channel on Snoonet

Hey /r/CasualMath!

I (along with several others) run a math channel on the snoonet irc network called #math. We are somewhat of a hybrid channel for a variety of math subreddits on Reddit.

IRC is a great way to discuss math and get homework help in real time. The channel would be happy to have you!

To connect via webchat: http://webchat.snoonet.org/math (link in sidebar as well)

I learned some Combinatorics counting the possible games in my tile-laying game: 3 tiles = 1,044 games, 6 tiles = 53 billion

I designed a tile game called Shuffledot. Tiles are bars of black and white dots, and each new tile has to share part of an edge with the layout so far. Rotations and mirrors count as the same.

I counted how many different games are possible at each size. Three 2-dot tiles give 249 final layouts and 1,044 games. Six 3-dot tiles give 781,937,280 layouts and 53,224,047,360 games. Shuffledot itself has twenty 4-dot tiles, which I can only estimate at about 2 × 10⁵⁶ games.

I’m not a mathematician, so I’d value any feedback on the piece, especially from anyone who has done counts for similar games.

Just a random math idea I came up with

Hey everyone, I was bored and decided to make up my own math. Long story short, I invented a new unit called f (felta). When you put it in an absolute value, it strictly outputs a negative number, like |1f| = -1 or |5f| = -5. And when it comes to f², it behaves like i. Why did I do this? I have no idea, but I thought it was pretty fun.

I built an interactive maths quiz for Reddit (with LaTeX!)

Hey guys!

Maths/Stats student here (2nd year), I couldn't find a decent interactive maths quiz on Reddit, so I thought I'd try building one.

I've created r/DailyMathProblem, with interactive questions, worked solutions and a leaderboard. Also being a maths enthusiast I was determined to get LaTeX working, and it was a success! (damit reddit, we have been asking for LaTeX for years!)

I've posted the first 10 questions already. The idea is to release a couple each day, ranging from easy to slightly challenging. Just quick little puzzles to keep your maths skills sharp, without needing half an hour and a notebook.

I've shared Challenge #10 (matrices) to show how it works. Would love some honest feedback on what you guys think!

Cheers!

Note: I'm aware my username is wild. I made it many years ago and thought I'd only ever be a lurker, not a poster!

WordPhoria - but actually it has Math

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi, I made a 'word' game called WordPhoria. Math part is coming... its a word-path game played across a hexagonal board — you make words by dragging through neighbouring letters, with the aim of working your way from the left side of the board to the right. The board changes as you play, and there are both relaxed (Causal) and more pressured (Chaser) game modes. Its not a daily but rather a lot of levels to pass the time and every level has a leaderboard for competitive play - though there is also multiplayer over wifi!

However, when developing it I stumbled upon the idea of a math 'mathsearch' where you find legitimate equations from random boards. And actually several of my testers found that the most interesting. Its quite challenging to get your head around but surprisingly satisfying when you construct a multipart equation.

Appstore link:

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/wordphoria/id676975194

Its free to download with 50+ free levels without any ads. A bunch of them are maths levels. Would love some feedback.

*I couldn't find a subreddit for math games in the same way there is a big wordgames subreddit so my apologies if this sort of thing doesnt fit r/CasualMath interest but hopefully it is of interest!
