Support Needed Ex demanding overnights with my 15-month old. I’m not okay.
My ex broke up with me when my daughter was 9-months old. That was hard enough. Now he’s pretty much demanding that she start spending nights at his house. And I’m sure he’ll push for full weekends soon.
Baby is 15-months old. We nurse 3-4 times a day. We cosleep and nurse back to sleep for overnight wakes. She will take a bottle, but pumping and bottle feeding has never been the norm for us.
I’m so happy he’s an involved father, but this is killing me.
Days away from her are okay, but nights are soul crushing.
Regular overnights or weekends away feel totally incompatible with our breastfeeding relationship.
Weaning is on the horizon at some point, but how does that fit in with this change? Do I try to wean faster to make this transition easier? Or will I end up nursing longer to help her through this?
Our coparenting counselor supports his request for overnights and asks me, “Can’t you just pump?” She just doesn’t get it. It’s not the same.
I’m trying to be reasonable. If we were to go to court, I think he would have gotten overnights a while ago.
Has anyone gone through this? How did you manage? Please let me know it’s going to be okay. It’s breaking my heart.
EDIT to add a few things addressed in the comments:
He had been doing some night time care of baby in my house (our former shared home). He would do 4-5 hours a couple times a week to give me a break. He decided a couple of weeks ago he didn’t want to do that anymore. I get it, it wasn’t easy.
I know the relationship with dad is important. She spends half the days with him and most of the weekend days. I’m trying to balance all of our needs and to keep the peace. I know in my soul this change would be more stressful for baby—not being with the boob at night. But maybe it’s worth it to keep the peace?
Do you have thoughts on timing of weaning? Should I try to night wean before overnights with dad start? Or should I expect to have to do that longer as she might need more comfort during this transition? Do I need to fully wean before she spends weekends with him? Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this and how they handled it.
