META Community Guideline: Revulsion ≠ Downvote

Do not downvote simply because you find a post repulsive or stupid. In fact, you should do the opposite. We want as many non-vegans to see our answers as possible, and Reddit post visibility is predicated on upvotes. When you downvote a post, it means you want as few people as possible exposed to this sub.

Did the OP ask a question respectfully & genuinely? (And no, simply being a non-vegan question does not make it disrespectful or disingenuous.) Then don't downvote it.

Most of us weren't always vegan. Hence the reason for our sub: so people can understand our views and hopefully adopt them.

Do not turn this into another DebateAVegan voting system. If you are in the habit of downvoting non-vegan posts simply for being non-vegan, stop or leave the sub please.

If someone asks a clearly disingenuous question like ''why you all like murdering plants?'', report the post under Rule 10, then scroll past it.

If someone asks questions that are indicative of what we know typical non-vegan societal rhetoric to be, on a sub whose purpose is for non-vegans to ask us questions, downvoting just shows us vegans to be hostile. People are put on the defensive over a meaningless downvote, setting them up to close themselves off to hearing what we have to say. This hurts the animals.

We should ensure that if people are going to be closed off to veganism, it is not due to a downvote.

Ethics Just learned about the dairy industry as a milk lover, what do I do now?

Hi guys, this is a bit of a tough one for me. I am in the process of opening my own dairy farm and wanted to create a kind of organic protein, milk drink.

For context, I am vegetarian, but I absolutely love dairy products and milk. Milk is something that I am genuinely addicted to and most of my meals consist of milk or milk products.

Initially, when this idea came to me, I thought let me buy some cows maybe 100 or so and start my own farm and I will love the cows. They will not go to slaughter and they will live a very good life, etc.

But whilst researching I found out how the dairy industry works, and I was trying to figure out ways to make it ethical, but with the repeated pregnancies, the diseases and the actual impossibility of having a sustainable farm without going into massive losses because once the cows don’t naturally give milk they will be a huge cost for the business and adding that cost to a product will make it non-affordable for most people.

So I have put a halt on this whole business idea of my own dairy product, but I love milk and now every time I see a bottle of milk all I think about is what the cows are going through because I want to drink this.

How do I approach this? I genuinely cannot see myself enjoying food in my life if I’m not able to have milk or milk based products of cheese or Greek yogurt or things of that sort.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Films/books that are not strictly about veganism but you feel have very pro-vegan themes?

Good morning/day/afternoon/evening all,

I watched Digger (2026) in theatres a few weeks ago (very much worth it) and if you have seen it there is this one particular scene which is not necessarily pro-vegan (one character says they abstain from consuming salmon for environmental reasons, the other gives the whole "the farmer loves them" speech and then says "I made that all up lol I have no idea where this comes from" which made me laugh because who hasn't been given this speech?). I also rewatched Atun-Shei Film's videos on the film Ravenous (1999) (another great film and Atun-Shei's videos on it are also great.)

Are there any films which are not directly about veganism but you feel have some kind of vegan themes?

Thanks in advance!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Do you think it's correct to say "vegan food"?

Thumbnail
• Upvotes

Hello! It's me again, the op who has it in for labels.

Please, let's be respectful. This post is intended to be a topic of reflection and sharing opinions, without attacking anyone. Let me know what you think and why you would/wouldn't do it. ☺️

Having made this necessary premise, I was wondering two things:

  1. Whether it makes sense to label food, for example at a restaurant or bar, as "vegan" when it's simply plant-based. Veganism, on the other hand, is a philosophy, so at most, humans are vegan, not food. Indeed, some foods are labeled "suitable for vegans" precisely because that's the idea.

  2. But the real point of my reflection is that for me personally it's not enough to tell someone that I eat plant-based food, or that I'll come to a restaurant if they also have plant-based food.

Sometimes I find myself saying things like, "Send me the menu so I can see if they have food for me," or "That bar doesn't have anything I can eat/would eat," and when I say that, I feel like I can't eat certain normal things because of a limitation of my own.

I'd rather say things like "ethical food" or "food with a low/lower environmental impact." Because when you say vegan or plant-based food, you're entering the realm of how non-vegans perceive veganism as a "diet" like keto, etc., and how it's therefore just a personal choice, made by a crazy person who loves animals so much that they go on extreme diets.

Instead, by shifting the focus to "ethical" or "low-impact," I feel the issue becomes a little more relevant and less subjective. It's no longer me who weeps for the poor little animals, but me who makes an effort towards ethics and environmentalism, all of which are more accepted and popular than veganism.

And so saying things like, "This restaurant also has ethical food" or "I don't go to this bar because they only have products with a high environmental impact," so as to shift the focus onto them, who are the problem, and not me, who has limitations.

What do you think?

Ps I wouldn't do this to feel superior to others but to try to make people realise eating more plant based is everyone's responsibility so they should do it too!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Can olive oil or anything fatty with slight acidity can be used as a butter substitute, specifically in baking?

I’m either gonna make a cake, some cookies, or French toast, with oat milk as the milk, and Chia as the eggs.

A butter substitute for baking needs to do the following.

It needs to be fatty.

Make it soft and moist.

And give it a richer flavor.

It also needs to be vegan in this case, I’m sure there are margins that can be vegan though.

Edited this in: Had to correct French’s spelling but if I chose that I won’t need butter.

Health How do you get B12?

I'm transitioning to a plant-based diet and I'm trying to research how to do it healthily. From what I can tell, as long as I'm eating a variety of foods, I can get all of my essential vitamins and minerals except B12. Do most vegans just take this as a supplement, or is there a plant-based source I'm unaware of?

Other I have lost interest in food recently. Still hungry but there is nothing that I want to eat. Ideas?

I'm in my 60s. I was ovo-lacto vegetarian for much of my life. I've been vegan for about 8 years now.

I'm basically "experienced".

For about a month or two now I haven't found any food very appealing. I'm still hungry but I can't think of anything that I want to eat.

This is a problem.

.

I mostly eat -

- Brown rice.

- Beans

- Whole-grain bread. Whole-grain pasta. Potatoes.

- Vegetables.

I've been very happy eating these things for decades.

.

I should not eat

- Salt / sodium. At all.

- Fat

- Sugar.

I do eat these things, but I certainly should not eat more of them than I do now.

I take a B12, an omega3, and an ordinary multivitamin daily. My medical checkups have always been "fine".

I like any kind of sweets (which I shouldn't eat much of), but I don't really care for fresh fruit.

.

My mood has been unhappy / stressed out / depressed, but I am always unhappy / stressed out / depressed - that's been my normal mood for most of my life. Food has never been a part of that - until recently I've always enjoyed food. AFAIK nothing is different recently with my mood.

.

Any ideas?

[Edit]

Thanks for the suggestions.

It seems annoying that I keep replying "Nope." "Nope." "Nope." "Nope."

But some things I have already thought of or ruled out, and I might already be doing those things if I wanted to do them.

Thanks.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) How to come to terms with this?

I hate non-vegan people and their attitudes, their excuses, and it's simply hard for me to live with what they choose. I've only recently become vegan myself.I want to live a normal life, it all hurts and angers me so much. How can we be more indifferent to the choices of others around us? Should I be?

Health Recommendations for a vegan toothpaste brand for gum disease or Reviews on Boka?

Hey y'all

I have gingivitis and gum disease that has been managed through extensive Dental Care and the use of paradontax and Crest gum detoxify toothpastes.

I'm fifteen days a vegan and I want to switch toothpastes, but only if I can find a vegan brand that actually works to combat this health issue with my gums.

I called my dentist and they recommended a brand called Boka.

Any recommendations for stuff that works is much appreciated, because while I would love to switch to a vegan brand, the health of my gums matter.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Do we have hope for lab grown meat?

With several countries banning it, it almost seems like humans want to continue abusing animals while ruining the planet while they’re at it.

Even when there’s a cruelty free version that’s better for the environment, they want to continue tormenting animals, and for what? Tradition. As usual.

I recently saw a post on Instagram that said Italy has banned lab grown meat. Around 90 percent of the comments were praising it and saying things like ”we’ve been eating meat and hunting since humans emerged”.

All of this just makes me feel completely hopeless.

Other do you guys remember the cutiepie irish kid? "I WON'T. EAT. ANIMALS!!!" i wonder what happened to her, and how she's doing now.

such an empathetic pure soul, i remember seeing her when i was around 10, and i was pretty moved by her. i became vegetarian at 12, im 18 now, just became vegan a few months ago. randomly saw a reel about her. i wonder how she's doing, who she is, if she's vegan now and if she has gotten into activism. this little kid could get so many people to see animals as people, having her in the movement would be really cool. i dont mean to be a creepy stalker and track her down or anything, just wondering if any of you happen to know what's new with her

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Are there many vegan food options in Tenerife?

My boyfriend and I are going to Tenerife for five days next month with his parents, and I’m starting to worry about how easy it’ll be to find vegan food, especially when eating out.

Has anyone been to Tenerife as a vegan? Is it generally easy to find vegan options in regular restaurants, or do you have to specifically seek out vegan-friendly places? I’d really appreciate any recommendations or experiences!

His parents are not vegan and unfortunately I’m not sure how willing they would be to eat at purely vegan restaurants, so do you know of any restaurants that serve meat but have a few plant-based options?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) As a vegan, I feel sorry for meat eaters. Does anyone feel the same way?

I’ve come to the realization that there’s a blockage in their brain preventing them from making the full change to veganism. This is not their fault. That’s why I feel sorry for them. I can’t really blame them. Does anyone else feel this way?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) 5-minute anonymous survey on plant-based chicken nuggets (vegans’ opinions wanted)

Hi everyone,

I’m a Food Science and Technology student at the University of Patras (Greece). My team is developing a plant-based chicken nugget for a European student food innovation competition, and we want to design it around what vegans expect rather than what we assume.

The survey takes about 5 minutes and is anonymous. It collects no names or emails. It asks about the texture and flavor you expect from a nugget, which ingredients you avoid, and what makes you buy or skip a meat alternative. Answers are used only for this academic project, and I will post a summary of the results in this thread once the survey closes.

Link: https://forms.gle/QvyvDEUeRFZHzbSU6

Anyone 18 or older who eats vegan or mostly plant-based can take part. Blunt criticism of current products is welcome, so don’t hold back. If you have questions about the project or the survey, ask in the comments and I’ll answer.

Thank you for your time!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Do you think (convincing) vegan leather also contributes to leather demand/normalisation?

I’ve been vegan for about a decade, and I don’t wear leather/wool (not opposed to secondhand leather/wool, but not the point of this post).

I saw a video recently (I think from anonymous for the voiceless) saying secondhand leather still contributes to leather demand and normalises wearing it. In this person’s view, the most ethical thing would be to dispose of anything that came from an animal because wearing it still contributes to the normalization of these materials and can create demand. I don’t fully agree with this, but it got me thinking… would realistic vegan leather problematic for this same reason? Like how would someone know it’s not a dead animal?

I wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing leather from an animal, but I personally do not mind if someone chooses to wear secondhand leather because the biggest thing for me is not paying for an animal to be killed. I also try to thrift most of my clothes for environmental purposes. Anyways, I type this as I’m wearing a vegan leather jacket and am worried about accidentally contributing to leather demand so curious to hear your thoughts😅

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Before you were Vegan, what did you think of Vegans and Veganism?

I unfortunately deflected and made fun. Since doing street outreach, I have seen the same behavior that I used to have. It seems more of an instant coping mechanism than something genuine.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) tips on becoming vegan?

hello all!

for a school project of mine, i'll be committing to a vegan lifestyle for a month. i'm looking for some tips, like do you guys take any supplements to make up for any vitamin deficiencies? i want to become FULLY vegan, so i'll be making sure to fully look over ingredients and make sure i don't accidentally consume any animal byproducts so are there any specific ingredients that i should looking out for? what's consensus on cross-contamination? is honey okay? those are some of general questions. also, if there are any longtime vegans, i would love to maybe interview someone.

thanks a bunch in advance!
