Self Post Single guy, where should I hang out? Not into bars.

I've spent a little time in Winchester before. I'm back now and possibly moving here after getting an amazing job offer.

However as a single guy who wants to change his status, I don't know where to hang out. Recommendations? I don't drink, and I dislike the bar scene.

I have a social job and when I'm not working I'm mostly a homebody... Besides that I go to the gym, play fetch with my German Shepherd, take classes, work on my cars, build home theater equipment, and so on. Mostly things that aren't very social, and that's a problem.

Thus I'm open to ideas outside of my interests, but again I'd really like to avoid the late-night bar scene.

Self Post Looking for F4M company/friendship in the Shenandoah Valley. Winchester, Woodstock and surrounding areas

40's and 50's age range. Divorced SWF looking for company or connection with someone. Love going to movies, live music, theater, wineries. Friends my age are married and settled. I like to be busy, even if its just taking my dogs for a walk. I work a lot, but always make time to get out of the house. I have 2 adult children that no longer live at home and 2 dogs that I love dearly. I'm short, thin (ish), dark curly hair. Would love to chat and find a like minded person.

Self Post Shooting buddies?

Hey folks!

I'm into gun stuff; I'm wondering if there's other people around Winchester who would want to meet up, shoot guns, and nerd out about gun stuff? I'm a member at some ranges around the area, so it wouldn't cost much besides ammo, kind of a BYOB situation. I'm 38m, married, and super don't want to talk about the government or jerk off anyone on a hiking trail.

DM me if you're down!

Self Post Looking For Room or Small Place to Rent

My husband and I are currently looking for a room or small apartment to rent. I was the bread winner at one point but became blind in my left eye over time and such, we are kinda stuck with my disability pay as a means of income and have been staying with family in Berryville for the time being. We are quiet, stick to ourselves, sort of tenants with no criminal background, working with a very limited budget. Given the chance, we would like to move into Winchester so my husband can find work as Berryville is small, with limited job opportunities. Because my disability is permanent, we do have a guaranteed income each month to pay bills while my husband applies for work in Winchester for a proper income. We are available to move in on November 1st, of this year. If you or someone you know has rental availability, please feel free to message me or drop links in the comments below.

Self Post Is anyone interested in a coding class over the summer?

Hi folks! I'm studying at LRCC for computer science, and I've always loved coding and teaching. I think I could pass my information on to other people easily, and I have past coding teaching experience.

Would anyone be interested in taking Python or general coding classes? I'm trying to consider what age range, demographic, or whatnot I should target so please do also let me know if you have friend family or children who'd possibly be interested :]

Self Post Valley Dental Care on Rivendell Ct, Trying to Illegally Bill

Greetings Everyone,

Valley Dental Care has been trying to bill people for money they do not owe. My friend is on Medicare and the bills were completely covered by Medicare and she got a bill saying she owes them money. When she called up she demanded an itemized bill showing what was covered and what was still owed. They replied with that their servers were down and could not provide that information. She told them she is not paying and if they can't supply that information that they cannot bill her for it. Today they called back asking her to pay. She again asked for an itemized bill and got the same exact response. She also explained to the lady that a few months ago investigators reached out to her because they were investigating medicare fraud from this place. They quickly ended the call after she explained to them that what they are doing is illegal.

I am writing this as a public service announcement. If you are being harassed or asked to pay a bill from this Dentist, ask for an itemized bill. If they cannot provide that, then they cannot legally bill you.

Self Post Stolen bike

I fully realize that this is a long shot, but if anyone knows anything about a stolen turquoise Cannondale bicycle from the Opequon/Hollingsworth neighborhood, that bike carries significant sentimental value. It belonged to my late mother, and I am absolutely devastated that someone decided to take something like this.

It was tucked in my backyard completely out of sight. Whoever did this would have had to enter through a back gate and go out of their way just to even see it.

I have been checking local pawn shops and online marketplaces for leads but have not found anything. It was recently serviced and in excellent condition. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Edited to link a picture (found online, I don’t have any good pictures of the bike itself but this is what it looks like).

Self Post Restaurants that take Celiac seriously?

My wife was recently diagnosed with pretty severe intestinal damage due to Celiac disease. I know there are plenty of restaurants in the area that have GF options, but the risk of cross-contamination is serious and while I am happy to cook for her at home, there are times when we'd like to go out to eat or order in. Are there any restaurants r/winchester can recommend that are known to take precautions like using different pans/knives/utensils, changing gloves, actively cleaning the station prior to cooking to prevent CC, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

Self Post Barber Shoutouts

I moved to the Winchester area in 2024. With every relocation, I always try to establish three specific relationships as quickly as possible: a barber/shop, an auto mechanic, and a gym membership.

This post is about the barber...

Over the past two years, I have patronized Star Barbershop on Louden St, Rt 7 Barbershop on Rt 7 (Berryville Pike), and most recently, Al's Place on Wilson Rd (near the corner of Weems and Loudon).

Star Barbershop was my first dip - Jason is the barber and is effective and cheap (in a good way) as there is. The man is a machine; he runs 7 days a week, from 0900-1700, and sometimes later. He can be chatty or quiet. To this date, I have never seen his face because he wears a surgical mask and glasses. Haircuts are $12, no fuss, no muss - cash only. My only knock is that he is a one-man show, so unless you make an appointment, you will quickly notice that walk-ins get jumped in the queue pretty often. Despite that, he has customers wait to get a cut.

Rt 7 Barbershop. I pivoted from the Star Barber to this location in 2025 because it was conveniently located near my residence. The staff are friendly and offer a good cut. The ambiance is very cozy. They are also a cash business, but they have an ATM on the premises if you make a rookie mistake like thinking they accept credit cards. The standard cost is $15, except Mon - Thurs, when they offer a $ 1-off special for specific clients (e.g., educators, public safety, military, etc.). Recently, the owner has experienced a decline in the workforce, forcing a temporary closure on Mondays, in addition to the standard Sundays and Wednesdays. So, plan accordingly. I also appreciate that they open their doors at 0800. FWIW the entire staff are female, so they don't just cut men's hair, but women too, obviously. I mention this because if you're a dude and want a shampoo and a cut, I suppose that option is available. They have one of those sinks that you can rest your neck on and get a wash, too. FYI.

Recently, I discovered Al's Place only because Rt 7 was closed on a day I wasn't expecting it to be. This barbershop is a hidden gem, IMO. $16 cuts are right at the edge of my comfort level, but I can't recall the last time I saw a barbershop open at 0630 on weekdays, and that availability is a huge plus - I actually visited today before work started. When you walk in, it's traditional...ya know, a 90s vibe; it's a bit dusty, and the furniture is dated, but it's no BS. I mean, he still has a barbershop pole just outside the front door. The radio is on and playing some chill elevator music that makes you just relax into the chair. Al and his old-school colleague don't say much; in fact, you will probably catch them sitting in the chair waiting for the next customer while they read the newspaper. That simplicity defines a barbershop for me.  Al has cut my hair twice, and he's efficient. The fades are on point, and he lines the back of your neck with a straight razor and foam (same at Rt 7). I think I was in and out in 15 minutes.

Anyway, that's my contribution. Take the intel as you will. Some of us enjoy a Sport/Great Clips or a more modern barbershop that can fade you up and create designs in your hair. I get it, different strokes for different folks. I want to live at the intersection of quality, cost, and timeliness. So, the three locations above earn my business.

Peace-

Self Post Incoming grad student at Shenandoah Conservatory

Hi everyone!

My name is Jalen, I'm an incoming master's student studying flute performance. I was wondering if any of you might be able to offer some advice about housing in the area.

I applied for on campus housing as I knew it would be the easiest way to find long term accomodation, but unfortunately there is no available space on campus. I've also checked for off campus apartments on facebook, zillow, and apartments.com but the options seem to be very limited.

If anyone knows of any other sources for finding housing/knows anyone that may need a roommate that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Self Post Suggestions on where to get paints for model kits?

EDIT: Your Hobby Place sells Vallejo, Citadel, AK, etc, which will probably be my main go-to for the time being. As far as I know, the closest shop that sells Tamiya is Huzzah Hobbies in Ashburn. Thanks for the suggestions everyone!

It looks like Hobby Hutt closed, which was my local source for Tamiya paints and Citadel washes :(

The closest I can find is in Charles Town, but was wondering if anyone knew of any closer places?

Also if there ARE other model kit folks around, uh hi! I build Gunpla lol

Self Post Hi from a local pet sitter! 🧡

Hi everyone!

I’m Hannah, and I recently set up this account for Animal Auntie Pet Care (AAPC). I mostly just wanted to introduce myself and be part of the community rather than jump in with anything promotional.

I’m local to the Winchester area and provide in-home pet sitting and drop-in visits for cats and dogs. I typically travel throughout Winchester, Clearbrook, Stephens City, Middletown, and surrounding areas.

I focus on in-home care so pets can stay in their normal environment and routine while their people are away. This tends to work especially well for cats, senior pets, and more anxious animals.

A little about me:

• Star Sitter on Rover

• Pet First Aid & CPR certified

• Photo updates during every visit

• Calm, routine-based care

I also have experience with basic dog training and behavior reinforcement, so I can help support things like leash manners or structure during visits if needed.

I’m not really here to advertise—I just know how hard it can be to find someone you trust with your pets, especially in your home, and I’m always happy to answer questions if anyone ever has them 🙂

Self Post Looking for a good vet for cats

I recently moved to the area so I'm not too familiar with what's around yet. I'm looking for a veterinary clinic that's good with cats (kittens in particular) and isn't wildly expensive. More specifically, I recently found a kitten abandoned and want to get the little guy checked out by a vet just as a precaution, and to establish a relationship with a local practice for when it comes time to get him neutered, vaccines, etc. I also have an older cat who could use a check up.

Suggestions are appreciated!

Self Post How many local (in Winchester / FredCo) places pay straight minimum wage?

Like the post says, how many companies / businesses in Winchester / FredCo pay straight minimum wage to start? I'm having a friendly discussion with my wife and some co-workers, who have the opinion that NOBODY in Winchester pays straight minimum wage. I think they are wrong but I'd like to hear some real-world examples to use as proof.

Self Post Looking for an Authorized Representative for remote Form I-9 onboarding (Stephens City / Winchester)

Hi everyone,
I accepted a remote job offer and need to complete my Form I-9 employment verification. Because the company is fully virtual, they require me to find a local "Authorized Representative" to fill out Section 2 of the form in person.
My physical EAD card was returned to sender and destroyed by USCIS due to a mail delivery error. Per the official USCIS guidelines, I am using the "Lost/Stolen/Destroyed Receipt Rule" using my unexpired electronic Form I-94 and my USCIS tracking receipt.
No background or experience is needed at all. I have the exact step-by-step instructions from my employer on what needs to be typed in, so we can do it together easily in under 10 minutes.

We can meet briefly in a public spot right here in town, such as the Bowman Library on Tasker Road (they have free public Wi-Fi).

I am happy to financially compensate you for your time and travel. Please send me a direct message if you are available to help. Thank you!
