Mod Announcement Mod announcement: new rule that use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared or disclosed

A new rule has been added to r/waterloo in regards to A.I.

Use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) must be declared, either in title, or the first line of text in original post

Moderators may and will take action in good faith regardless of compliance with this new rule.

The reason we're doing this is to try not to be too far behind in response to the use of this technology, and encourage genuine engagement within our community.

Recently mods have been removing posts of various low-quality effort such as A.I. images, and publications purporting to be news or 'news style' articles that are suspected to be A.I. - but also fail to provide the identity of any legitimate living creator/author within the Region of Waterloo or otherwise.

This is an effort to remove or reduce poor quality, deceptive, disinformation, and various other posts made in bad faith.

Please direct concerns or comments to mod mail.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mod Announcement Changes to Flair in r/Waterloo

It was recently pointed out that the flairs referencing the 2025 election are maybe a teeny bit outdated.

After discussion among the moderator team, it was determined that while the language was outdated, the flairs still were useful in identifying sudden influxes of new accounts to certain threads. The flair language has therefore been updated and will be applied as users post or comment. The flairs refer to the approximate period when a user became somewhat active in r/Waterloo. This is not the same as the date account was created (which you can see on each user's page) and not when the very first post was made in this subreddit.

As explained by the previous flair announcement:

The intent of this flair is not to target newbies, nor to say that we don't want people to join the subreddit. All are welcome in the subreddit. The intent is to make it clear to readers when there is an influx of unknown accounts which push certain narratives in the comments. This does happen, especially on posts about certain controversial subjects. People should know when these they are new accounts and not established community members.

While everybody should be aware if there is an obvious astroturfing campaign, all users remain responsible for using their best judgement when determining credibility of submissions and comments. Please consider the merit of ideas rather than the reputation of a commenter.

Feel free to submit any comments or constructive feedback below, or to comment and receive your new flair. There may be further tweaks to come and this flair system could be discontinued at any time.

Thank you for reading, and stay safe out there in all this snow.

Update 2026-01-23: New flair is out again, 2025 users should now have "Regular" status, and users new since 2026 will be noted.

Lime scooters are basically a scam. They’re just bad in general.

I forget what the orange scooters were called but they were much better than these lime ones. They had some sync issues but not nearly as bad. I would take the scooters if I was running late or just to get around because they’re fun, affordable and faster than walking.

With these lime scooters, they are:

  1. Hardly ever charged
  2. Everywhere is a slow zone
  3. Always damaged
  4. Ridiculously expensive
  5. This is the worst and make them useless) they sync horribly with wherever the road is supposed to be. they just hardly ever work.

I can spend all day nit picking but the fact that they can never tell where the road is regardless of if your in the centre of the road or actually on the sidewalk, makes things things useless, morally wrong and dangerous to those who use them and traffic.

$10 for $10 is just criminal especially when with these scooters you need to push them half of the way anyway. All in the name of safety meanwhile they charge u every second of the way for their technological flaws. I think like is by uber but its cheaper and more convenient to get an uber than use these things because they’re just don’t work. More than half of the time it’s stuck screaming at you “stay off the sidewalk”. Meanwhile your on a path or the middle of the road. And it’s so obvious that it’s just so they can milk more money from people.

They need to loosen up every aspect of these things or just have a new service because these scooters are useless. Can’t expect much else from a service who charges people more or less based on their online spending habits 👎 absolute sin

Trip Report: Waterloo Sticky Toffee Pudding Quest (Thanks!)

Hey everyone, thanks for all the recommendations last week, lost of amazing places to choose from. We ended up visiting Scram & Dram (technically in New Hamburg but it was worth the short drive!).

Sticky Toffee Pudding was the highlight - we shared 2 between the four of us, and devoured it, even after have a heavy lunch. Service was fantastic. Meals were good - my boys (university age) had Fish & Chips and the fully loaded Mac & Cheese (with chicken and stuff), I had the Scotsmen Burger, wife had the Steak & Kidney Pie. When the birthday boy smiled and said - this is exactly what he had envisioned, it was so worth it! We don't really know Sticky Toffee Pudding. It was so good, we will certainly be back.

Appreciate the local advice! We also had an evening visit a week before, and decided we needed to do some 'research', so had a beer, enjoyed some great live music, and shared a dessert at the Duke of Wellington (we saw it, recognized the name from our growing list, so stopped in). It was a great vibe, but happy we ended up at Scran & Dram for the special lunch.

Thank you all!

My simple tally on the feedback from y'all was:

  • Scran & Dram (New Hamburg) – 4 mentions / votes (comment about authenticity)
  • Malt & Barley Public House – 4 mentions / votes (a mention that they share ownership with Scran and Dram)
  • The Bauer Kitchen – 4 mentions / votes
  • The Duke of Wellington – 2 mentions / votes
  • Piper Arms Pub – 1 mention / vote
  • Charcoal Steakhouse / Martini's – 1 mention / vote
  • Beast Pizza – 1 mention / vote
  • The Tipsy Fox – 1 mention / vote
  • The Foundry (Cambridge) – 1 mention / vote

Fun things to do in Waterloo with friends visiting for a day?

My friends are visiting from BC this Friday. We’ll be around the university area and have GRT passes, so we’re open to exploring other parts of the region too.

What are some fun things we could do together while they’re here? I’m open to anything, whether it’s food spots, fun activities, or places worth checking out!

With the passing of the PCs ironically named _Better Regional Governance Act, 2026_ we lost our right to vote for Regional Chair this past municipal election. What happens now going into this new sitting of Council?

Flavacol suppliers?

Recently I've discovered the wonders of popping corn on the stove and learned about the existence of Flavacol. Anywhere local where I can buy some? All the retailers online are charging an arm and a leg for shipping and I can't drive to Mississauga for pick up.

Vote

Today is voting day for municipal elections. You can vote online or in person. You simply have to decide who you think is the best person out of the choices given.

Not voting is not a protest. You are simply letting other people make that decision for you. If you do 2 minutes of research and cast your vote, it is still better than the person who will make that choice for you.

Consider that this person who you trust more than yourself, may not have done even the 2 minutes of research that you won't do. They may even be the driver on the road you hate, or the school parent you won't trust your kid with, or the owner of the thing that did you wrong that one time.

You are letting them decide for you.

Calling all Waterloo region sports teams and clubs 👋

We're looking for local youth teams and clubs to join Team Up: 30 Days, 30,000 Meals this November.

Whether you're a hockey team, soccer club, running group, or any other team, you can participate by collecting food or funds for the Cambridge Food Bank or The Food Bank of Waterloo Region and encouraging other teams to join in.

It's a simple way to give back, build team spirit, and have a little friendly competition along the way. A little friendly rivalry, a lot of community impact :)

Do we have a list of Coalition for Life and/ or other extremist Candidates?

It's really hard to keep track of who all these people are

It seems they're trying to destroy education using the same tactics they did in the states, leading to more fake Christians in power across the board.

A list would help today if there is one?

Okay this is tiresome. Does anyone have or know anyone renting out a room/studio?

I can’t with facebook marketplace and kijiji and roomies. Everything is either female only, vegetarian only, indian preferred, straight up predatory conditions like coin laundry in a house, walk in closets for rent
etc etc etc the list goes on and on.

And yes i reached out to sterling housing. They told me they’ll cover last month’s deposit but i have to find a place myself and provide proof of agreement.

I desperately need a place before it becomes cold.

Thanks!

Heritage planners in the region

I am studying Urban Planning and GIS at Conestoga college, for one of my assignments I need to interview a heritage planner from the region, it doesn’t has to be in person, I can send you an email with the questions and you can reply back to them. I have tried to reach out to the City of Kitchener Heritage Department to get one of the planners for the interview, but with the new Doug Ford “Designate or Lose It” deadline I understand that all of the staff in the building will be busy.

If you are a heritage planner in the region and would like to help me with this assignment please send me a DM so I can forward my questions to you via email.
