How entertwined is alfafa farming in Utah with Utah natives?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I've been going through a variety articles and reports about alfafa, including trying to find some information about water usage on specific farms in Utah. This is something very important to me as Utah's wildlife is in deep shit if we don't figure this out.

Cross-refencing certain sites on Google maps has let me know that a lot of this farming is done by natives on native land. This immediately struck me as intentionally: Recruiting a community without as many options for work (if they want to stay on their reserve, I mean) to farm for cheaper. So my question, particularly for the Indigenous of Utah, is how enterwined is alfafa farming with these communities? If alfafa restrictions were put in place or if farming haulted all together how would these communities be effected economically? This isn't something I've seen any body else wonder about.

Ten Utah House districts changed ratings in our latest update.

All ten moved toward Democrats.

Utah Republicans need 50 House seats to keep their supermajority. We have them favored in 57.

Could Democrats break the GOP supermajority?

It's possible.

What primary ballot do I wish to receive if unaffiliated?

Someone explain to me… I am an unaffiliated for political parties. What primary ballot do I request?

I’ve seen some other posts stating to register as republican to vote in the Republican Party ( because that’s the primary election that actually matters?) but I don’t want my name to be affiliated with republicans.

Help?
Someone explain it to me like I’m 5.

Monitory eVerify vs. ICE Question

I’ve had this thought bugging me and nowhere to discuss and get opinions on it.

Why couldn’t we have every business in the state do mandatory eVerify on every employee/new hire? Why couldn’t we apply nation wide?

Companies not following this would either receive fines or lose their business license.

As far as I understand, this is a free service and is only required if a company is public or a private company has over 150 employees in the state of Utah.

If we had every company using it, wouldn’t that help with most of the issues with immigration?

Utah has authorized $2.6 billion in business tax incentives since 2004. This includes a deal with the largest data center in the world from 2026.

Utah's state and local governments hand out business tax incentives to businesses wanting to build in the state. Digging through scattered data, I found at least 19 separate state-level programs that give up tax revenue to private companies. Nine are tax credits. Two are sales tax exemptions with no ceiling. Six are authorities the Legislature created that divert property or sales tax revenue inside a defined boundary.

Utah's main business recruitment tool is the Economic Development Tax Increment Financing credit, run by the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity. Since 2004 the state has signed 359 awards. Those contracts promised about 151,000 jobs and roughly $62 billion in capital investment. Against that, the state authorized about $2.6 billion in credits.

The credit is post-performance and refundable. A company that misses its benchmarks gets nothing.

2026 is running higher than any prior year, driven by one $172 million award to Creekstone Energy for AI data center and power infrastructure. That award is tied to 106 jobs. It works out to about $1.6 million in forgone state revenue per job. The median award across the whole program is about $7,900 per job.

64% of awards went to companies already operating in Utah, and those companies hold 77% of the authorized dollars.

Authorized is a different category than paid. 86 contracts were signed and never issued. Of the 237 the state reports on, 166 sit under 25% of their cap, meaning a lot of these deals don't end up paying out the full reimbursement. Why that is, I don't know. Utah publishes that data in 25-point buckets, so there is no public figure for how many dollars any individual company has actually received.

The 25 largest awards hold 58% of every authorized dollar. The average share of new state revenue rebated has climbed from 18.4% in 2018 to 33.0% across the 13 awards recorded so far in 2026.

Separately, Utah exempted data center equipment from sales tax in 2020 for facilities over 150,000 square feet. The exemption applies at the point of sale, so no agency records what it costs and the public is left without any data to evaluate the deal. A legislative policy memo requested by Sen. Nate Blouin in July 2026 confirmed that and gave lawmakers three options: repeal it, convert it to a refund so the cost is trackable, or tie it to performance.

The State of Utah commissioned a study reporting a 454% return for FY2019 through 2022. That figure counts all new state revenue from an incentivized project and credits it to the incentive. If the company would have built here anyway, it still is counted, which obviously isn't right. The calculation produces 454% either way.

What do you guys think of these business incentive deals? Do you think paying $1.6M per added job for a data center is worth it to the taxpayer? Are there other community benefits from data centers you've seen that usually get missed? Or are these lopsided 'sweetheart' deals for these businesses?

Mayor Wilson wants to spend $700 million on a new jail -- reports

Just came from a meeting where it was discussed the lame duck Republicans on the Salt Lake County council intend to approve vast sums of money for a new expanded county jail, finished in time to massively incarcerate homeless people leading up to the Olympics. The figure I heard was $700 million, but I don't have that independently verified.

Democrats on the council seem to think they can appeal to proponents' sense of fiscal responsibility by pointing out diversion programs could erase the need of an expanded facility.

And that's fine /s. Let them play nice (I guess).

I feel like the rest of us should make it quite clear to Jenny Wilson that she is fired, will never be forgiven, and may as well move out of state because her reputation will be so thoroughly destroyed, dragged through the mud, and put away wet and crusty unless she does everything she can to stop this.

They have until January when Democrats will retake the majority on the council and the expansion would become impossible.

Note, Mayor Wilson already put this to the voters in a bond election not long ago. Voters turned it down! But Wilson's attachment to democracy is weaker than her attachment to putting human beings in cages. Apparently. So she is trying to put this bill on taxpayers anyway even though she knows they oppose this outright, entirely and totally.

Time we make it clear we reject and oppose Mayor Wilson herself outright, entirely, and totally.

Unless she does the right thing.

If Ben McAdams is for data centers, then why not just vote republican

I think in a slc city cast interview Ben here isn't for a moratorium for data center. Essentially asking that we put a hold on all data centers till we figure stuff out. If the repu lican nominee is for a moratorium they why just vote for that guy? This is idiotic republican lite v republican cocoa. In any case I feel like I would sit this vote out

Kevin O'Leary and Jill went up the hill, both with a buck and a quarter. Governor Cox came down with a $2.50. OH! Too bad he didnt see the angry mob of Utahns waiting for him at the bottom.

Dude must think were dumb too. He calls a drought emergency but in the same speech says, " Dont worry about the Data Center. It will actually add water back to the Great Salt Lake." Does this guy even know how Data Centers work? Let me guess, next thing he is going to tell us is that snozzberries taste like snozzberries? Shit, not if he is selling them.

Michael Ferrell and Liban Mohammed are RAT F*%CKS

Real candidates for this race running for good, ideological reasons be they moderates like Riebe or maybe leaning more left like Derek Kitchen, these two and more fantastic people saw that they were not going to lead their lane for the primary. Recognizing that staying in the race would serve their political opponent even if it glazed their own egos awhile longer, some great candidates that were once in this race dropped out. Thank you, to them.

Now we're left with two serious contenders, and two RAT F&$CKS.

What is a ratf&$ck? you ask? Well....

Like they say about God, if Liban Mohamed did not already exist he would need to be invented. We don't need to know whether he is being paid by the same people behind the dark money superPACs pushing McAdams, it's irrelevant; because corporatist political operatives can scan a race and use useful idiots if they exist, or completely manufacture from ground up some tailored-made candidates that will peel away support from your target. The target in this case of course is the Bernie Sanders' endorsed candidate, Nate Blouin.

There are two rats in this race because that's how many it takes to accomplish the job, ok. To split the primary vote which ordinarily goes 3-1 to progressives. With one moderate, one progressive, and two rat f*&ck progressive pretenders and/or useful idiots whose bills are being paid by dark money and they don't even realize it (who knows), the moderate has a strong chance to win especially with the already-mentioned superPACs running ads for you day and night at the tune of tens of millions od dirty genocide dollars. Mohamed and Ferrel may be rats, but McAdams you're a genocidal freak.

Three rats would be more than enough. One, not enough. There are two rat f*&cks in this race because the corproate oligarchy needs that many for McAdams to win. How do you know they are rats and not just honest-to-goodness progressives? Because they didn't drop out like Kitchen and Riebe, that's how.

Where can I call out a U.S. representative/senators

I’m seriously over all of the 4 representatives and 2 senators in our state and I wanna call them out. Does anyone know their schedule or where they’ll be walking to/from when they’re in Utah??
