The Time I Spent a Weekend in an Abandoned Prison for Women

Several years ago, I headed off for a solo road trip for the weekend.

I decided that my home base would be the abandoned Kingston Prison for Women. At the time, it was very easy to get inside, the segregation cells were clean and they still had the beds, so I could bring an air mattress/pillow and sleeping bag and sleep comfortably for two nights.

On Friday night, I pulled up with a Little Caesars pizza, a 6 pack of PBR, all my photo gear and my sleeping gear. I set up my room for the night in segregation and slept comfortably.

In the morning, I packed and hid my sleeping gear and headed off for a day of exploring towards Smiths Falls, returning to P4W late Saturday night.

Again, I set up up my cell and settled in for the night. At some point in the night I heard voices and could see flashlights illuminating the hallways. Nothing to worry about, they are probably explorers. I decided to just stay in my room and surprise them, and that I did. One of them opened the door and shrieked "OH SH!T THERE'S SOMEONE IN HERE"

One of the guys recognized me, we chatted for a bit and they went on their way

I've been to this location several times since my first visit in November of 2017

Here is a batch of photos that I took that weekend

When the St. Nicholas Breaker opened near Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, in October 1932, it was meant to be the future of anthracite: a plant of steel and concrete that could process 12,500 tons of coal a day, moving it from load-in to load-out in twelve minutes.

Chartered in 1895 as the seventy-first Shrine mosque in the country, the Irem Temple rose in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, as a $230,000 monument to a fraternal order at the height of its influence.

An idyllic little cottage right by a lake, containing a few relics from decades past.

Somewhat rummaged through, but no vandalism.

Found this shack in Nelson county Kentucky while exploring my property. Any idea what it could have been used for or when it was built? I’m thinking late 18 to early 19. It has 2 rooms and an upstairs area with stairs on the outside of the building.

The operating room inside a private doctors office somewhere in Portugal 🇵🇹

Abandoned in 1991-1992, this private clinic was founded in 1955 when a physician transformed this old manor house into a medical practice. For over 30 years until his death in the early 90s, the doctor served the community and focused on general health care, births and surgeries. Despite being abandoned for 34-35 years, it is still filled with all of the equipment that was left when family members and a group of physicians couldn’t come to an agreement with what would happen to this private clinic once the main doctor passed away. A little spooky doing this explore alone but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity. This is just one of many rooms filled with equipment.

Abandoned geodesic dome house, empty since 1990, Southeastern Ontario

Spotted this one poking up above the treeline in a tiny Ontario hamlet, sitting on a hill over a small river and an old mill. It’s a geodesic dome home that sat empty for over 30 years after its owners left around 1990. It was overgrown, weathered, and still had that 70s “house of the future” optimism even while it was falling apart.

The triangle-panel ceiling is the best part. The light inside a dome is unlike any other abandoned house I’ve shot.

Abandoned time capsule house in Ontario: a lifelong music fan’s home, frozen since 2003

This small bungalow in Southern Ontario has sat untouched for over 20 years. The last calendar on the wall reads November 2003. A neighbour told me the owner stops by two or three times a year, never locks the door and refuses to sell, so everything is still exactly where it was left.

Whoever lived here loved music. There’s a turntable in nearly every room, plus 8-track, cassette and reel-to-reel decks, boxes of tapes covering the floors, and shelves of rock biographies. The ceiling is coming down from water damage, there are still dishes in the kitchen and unopened beer on the counter, and a little Christmas tree is still standing in the living room.

The best finds were a 1976 Rush ticket from the Welland Arena, an Uncle Sam’s lineup poster, three signed Davy Jones photos, a 1972 Summit Series program, old Rolling Stone magazines and an ALF doll keeping watch over the stereo.

Location not shared. Nothing was taken; everything was photographed and left where it was.
