A word regarding vitriolic response to AI content

I'll cut right to the chase. I've noticed a lot of dickish posts about folks who use AI. In short, please note the 'Be Nice' rule. I really don't care if you love it, hate it, or are somewhere in between. If you're rude, don't be surprised if your post is pulled. If you continue being rude, it shows you may not be fit for polite society and may be banned at my discretion.

That is all, please carry on.

I gave a warrior a second chance at life. The problem? He has to start over as a ten-year-old.

• Upvotes

What if you remembered a lifetime of battles, knew exactly how to wield a sword, and understood what it took to survive, but your body could no longer do any of it?

That's the idea behind my fantasy audio novel, **A Warrior's Second Life**, which I've been publishing on Pocket FM.

Maximus Calder was once a powerful warrior. Sixty years after his death, he awakens in the body of Ambrose Vale, a ten-year-old boy who died trying to earn his place at Meridian Academy.

He remembers his past, the people he lost, and the betrayal that ended his first life.

But remembering how to fight isn't the same as being able to fight.

His new body is weak. The world has changed. And the strength he once depended on must be earned all over again.

I wanted to explore reincarnation from a different perspective. Rather than having a powerful warrior immediately dominate everyone around him, what if he had to learn patience, accept his limitations, build genuine friendships, and discover that strength means more than winning battles?

The story combines fantasy, swordsmanship, academy life, gradual progression, mystery, friendship, and family.

But at its heart, it's about something simpler:

**If life gave you another chance, would you repeat the person you were, or become someone better?**

I'm still developing this world and its characters, and I'd genuinely appreciate feedback from fellow fantasy and audio story listeners.

If you decide to give it a listen, I'd love to know what you think about the story, the characters, and the pacing.

[FREE Kindle eBook sample] Get the first three chapters of my urban fantasy novel Escaping the Darkness!

I'm an indie author just starting out and my book will be on Amazon early December. It's part of a series to be titled A Tale of Mirth and Madness, and it's intended as pure entertainment and escapism, an action adventure story combined with a bit of mystery and comedy in a fictional urban fantasy setting, aesthetically inspired by touches of steampunk and Gothic horror.

Here's the blurb:

In a mist-shrouded land wracked by turmoil and unrest, a man with no past and a woman with no future face a greater mystery than anything they could have imagined when they are invited to partake in a secretive gathering – one that is to be held in an abandoned village where no one ever goes, on the borders of a vast and trackless wilderness.

But first they must find a way to get there.

Strange things are stirring once again in this land of malady and madness, in which ancient terrors long thought to be fable and myth are beginning to come awake, and return. Soon everything will change and nothing will remain the same – for who can say what dreadful upheaval may yet be in store for those unfortunate enough to dwell in this fallen realm.

Something is coming.

Here's the link to the free chapters.

And here's the Amazon page.

Hope you'll enjoy it!

Tropes tend to get a bad wrap so I was curious if people had a trope or just something they like to see in their urban fantasy books while they are reading them.

Brandon Nightfall

“King of the Shadows”

Mr. Untouchable

[Blueblood Noble]

Rogue-Watcher*

William Chosen -(Rival)-

—-

Brandon Nightfall is a vampiric noble from the Minor House of Nightfall which is part of the Báthoric Demonic Order. He is also first cousins with the Ruling Countess Marie Báthory and the only true blueblood noble to ever become a watcher. His rogue watcher status has caused a great deal of controversy within Báthoric court. It has also gained him considerable notoriety.

To say he is an enigma would be an understatement. No one knows what drives him, not even his sister, the clubbable emissary, Camellia Nightfall. He is in something of a secret love affair with Lord Bale’s twin sister. Tales of their “clandestine” rendezvous are all the rage in regal court right now. How Lord Bale’s twin sister even ended up in Báthoric custody, serving as the countess’ lady’s companion, is an interesting tale of its own. Sadly, it is one that will have to wait to be told.
Brandon spent his early life, from the ages of 4-16, as a royal hostage in Draconian court. He was made prisoner of the Wulf King due to a truce the Báthory clan signed with the Dracul clan some 200 years ago. The archaic practice is used to subjugate them before the “superior” Dragon Clan. It was implemented after a very ugly war between them called the War of Orchids. The subjugation clause has worked fine up until the last two royal hostages.

The Draconian court didn’t take it easy on him during his time in custody. Don’t get me wrong, he was afforded the same dignities and amenities any noble would come to expect while in the care of another lord, rival or not. The only condition on his treatment was the Wulf King’s order to his younger brother, Radu the Mad Prince, who was acting as his regent at the time, to have Brandon always wear a blindfold. This was done for a couple of reasons:

1: To humiliate him without injury. Harm to a blueblood under their custody would be a superb casus belli against them. 2: So, he couldn’t learn his surroundings. The last thing they wanted was another devastating war. They barely won the last one the last royal hostage sparked. Thus, Brandon was kept blindfolded to prevent him from becoming too comfortable with his surroundings. The fear was that he would return home and report everything he knew about Draculin territory. The less familiar he was with their military maneuvering and political machinations the better.

Crazy part is the blindfold had the opposite effect. He cleverly used it to hone his skills to great effect. Developing his own style of ninjutsu proponents and advisories simply refer to as Sightless Ninjutsu. He loves traditional ninja weapons such as the ninjato, kunai, shuriken, and smoke bombs. He does carry a very hi-tech pistol capable of firing special bullets laced with various substances such as silver, mercury, sulfur, and holy water. It must be noted that he rarely fights blindfolded when engaged in live combat unless he finds himself losing, which never happens.

When the Wulf King found out about his abilities, he was incensed. He ordered Brandon to appear before him in Bulgaria to account for himself. The meeting was very anti-climactic, and instead of ordering his imprisonment, he took an immediate liking to the quiet teenager who appeared before him blindfolded and unfazed by the situation. The Wulf King wondered why he was training so hard. There was no need to fight, he already had everything at his disposal. He was a blueblood noble after all—a social status that afforded him more privilege and prestige than most.

He thought back to the last royal hostage and how he had caused his kingdom so much grief. That vampire wasn’t even a fighter, he was a bureaucrat, yet he had managed to renew the flame of war between clans. He had returned home with tales of barbarism and sadism. His gift for gab rallied his clan and several vassals into upheaval. Romania was in chaos, and it took quite a concerted effort from the Wulf King to restore order. Things got so ugly his brother, Radu the Mad Prince, began plotting to overthrow him, but that’s a story for another day. Now imagine the grief a warrior-talent such as Brandon could wreak. The thought enticed the Wulf King and instead of being apprehensive he was excited to see how strong the conflict would make him.
And so, with these thoughts in the back of his mind, he asked Brandon what his goal was and to speak freely. Brandon remained quiet for a moment as he thought long and hard. He told the Wulf King that he was determined to reach his goal but refused to say what it was when pressed. All he did was reiterate that he would stop at nothing to complete his secret mission. The Wulf King was impressed. Why? Because in the cruel and twisted world of Transylvania, where the Dracul clan reign supreme, strength and fearlessness are rewarded. Weakness and fear are forever punished. They are brutal traditionalist who subscribe to the old “Vlad the Impaler” style of governance.

He allowed Brandon to continue to hone his skills. He even allowed him to join his army in its incursions into Bulgaria territory. They were fighting against the Holy Order in what was supposed to be neutral territory. The legends are true. He has never been touched by an opponent in battle. Hence the moniker “Mr. Untouchable.” His fighting style is too swift, silent, and calculating for all but the most elite opponents. He is such a polarizing figure, he is on the Holy Order’s radar, and that’s extremely difficult to do, considering they always stay out of worldly affairs.

He was released from Draconian custody at the age of 16, whereupon he decided to stick around, even going so far as to join the Wulf King’s mercenary entourage for four years. After that, he disappeared for several more. His absence caused quite a bit of controversy within the Báthory clan. Rumors were all over the place. Some thought him died, others said he ran. The truth was that he was busy training to become the first blueblood rogue watcher in recorded history.

The quiet and mysterious Master Nightfall has finally returned home to his family estate. He was eagerly embraced by his father upon arrival. The reason for his abrupt return is vague. Rumor has it, it has something to do with this new liege watcher, by the name of William Chosen. He wanted to test the rumors about how promising of a ninja he was. The venerable Duke Montgomery Nightfall is old and ailing. He worries constantly over his disinterested heir and what will happen to his fiefdom when he is dead. Brandon is his only son and the rightful claimant to the powerful Chicago dukedom. Only time will tell which agency prevails—the shadow of the warrior or the light of the prince.

The images in the short are AI generated, everything else was made by me—a human. Hi 👋🏾

Does Anyone Recognize This Book?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi, I was going through old pictures in my phone when I came across this screenshot from a book I was reading in December 2017. I remember liking the book, but can't remember the name.

I recall the female protagonist was from the human world, but somehow got mixed up in the world of the fae. There are portals to the fae world. Her love interest is a powerful fae. She had a partner named Gabriel who she was working with to... do something. They had a good relationship, but he dies at some point in the book (I think in the second or third one?) It's a completed series. She ends up with the fae guy.

If anyone knows the name of this series, please let me know!

Discussion Is the rebooted Lucifer comic series worth reading?

I’m not huge into comics but the Sandman-verse I’ve always been addicted to and it’s become a staple of the urban fantasy genre for me. I read and enjoyed Mike Carey’s Lucifer series (I loved the focus on biblical mythology; it reminded me a lot of Bobby Dollar and Sandman Slim) but I saw there’s another rebooted series out there with different creators attached to it. How is it?

Meet Dante Vilar — a reluctant hero pulled into a dangerous world of runes and hidden magic

Hi everyone!
I’m an indie author and I’ve just released my Urban Fantasy novel, The Vertex Rune.
This time, I wanted to introduce you to the main character: Dante Vilar.

Dante isn’t a chosen one.
He isn’t a prodigy.
He’s a young man trying to survive life — until a single encounter drags him into a secret society that protects reality using ancient runes and forbidden magic.

He’s forced to face:
• powers he doesn’t understand
• enemies who know more about him than he does
• a past that refuses to stay buried
• a world where every choice has a cost

If you enjoy character-driven fantasy with flawed heroes who grow through danger, mystery, and magic, Dante’s journey might resonate with you.

Here’s the Amazon link:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HNKQVWL9

If anyone wants to check it out or share thoughts, I’d truly appreciate it.
Thanks for supporting indie authors!

Detective vs Faction Politics: Which is more UF?

I have a hate-hate relationship at r/fantasy when it comes to UF, which always rears its head when someone recommends Green Bone or Lamora when UF requests come up (why not just say Malazan!). But recently someone said of Dresden that it starts off as detective stories then becomes MORE urban fantasy-esque when it becomes focused on the politics between the factions, and that's got me thinking about the subgenre.

So many of the characters are detectives, or at least are hired for a case/ mystery each book to drive the story. This clearly comes from the noir influence and makes sense since it gives a clear goal each time. These cases also allow the audience to explore the world by using the protag as proxy as they hunt for clues. We also get to meet the reoccurring characters and factions this way.

And it makes sense that the reoccurring characters and factions become more layered as the series continues, with the audience accruing more information about the worldbuilding through complexity creep. And as the world becomes more vibrant and detailed, it starts generating its own story prompts that weren't available prior: You can try and stop a potential war between the fairy enclave and vampire gang without first establishing and exploring both enclave and gang in previous stories.

Anyways, so I'm wondering if this is the natural progression within the subgenre, where the cases originally introduce the worldbuilding until the world reaches critical mass and then takes over as the main driver of the story.

Just beyond the veil of the mondain world, lies the secrets of the arcane. The true world. A world where every myth, legend, and piece of folklore is real and every historical event involved monsters and mages just out of site.

The story takes place in modern day Boston, with a party of adventures working for an organization know as "Four Leaf". A contract company that works for globe spanning magical government know as "The Ordo Magiki", specializing in the recovery of lost artifacts and arcane investigation.

The party has fought against undead red coats, the hag known as "Johney Appleseed", black market smugglers, and even a shadowy entity in the US government threatening to upend the arcane world as they know it.

Essea: all fictional universes are real, and accepting your true self gives you powers.

Essea Kingdom is my first story within this fictional philosophy. After an event that makes the real world fantastic, the main character, Epsil, strives to obtain the greatest essea (which is existence, goodness, and beauty) both over the course of multiversal adventures and in his relationships with others.

Hey everyone!

Issue #3 of my independent comic series, Campaign Serbia, is out!

I write the story, develop the characters and world, and direct the artwork using AI-assisted illustration.

Campaign Serbia is a supernatural action-comedy set in modern-day Serbia, where every myth, conspiracy theory, forgotten gods, aliens and urban legend is real. All at the same time.

It's never dull in the madhouse of Europe.

Several issues are made, more are on the way and I'm releasing them weekly.

The gallery contains the cover and opening pages of Issue #3.

I'd love to hear what you think of Armie and the comic convention setting!

All feedback is welcome!

Promotion IFIL, an isekai full of yōkai, bad behavior, and people you accidentally care about

Remember when someone microwaved fish in the office? An unforgettable experience. For all the wrong damn reasons.

That's the spirit of the humor I love writing. People can survive something horrifying together and still want to murder each other over lunch.

I'm Daniel Propst, Ryujin2xd on Royal Road. My ongoing serial, I Fell In Love With A Girl Who Died Before I Was Even Born, mixes anime-inspired isekai with urban fantasy, Japanese folklore, supernatural horror, romance, and slice of life.

The setting is Shin'yume and Crescent Moon Academy. Expect ghosts, vampires, yōkai, gross humor, and messy people whose feelings don't become any easier just because they're supernatural.

IFIL is gross, funny, and full of heart. I want you laughing at these idiots, then realizing you'd be upset if anything happened to them. Rude of them to get under your skin like that.

It's ongoing, with 250+ chapters on Royal Road. If that sounds like your kind of trouble, start here: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/106458/i-fell-in-love-with-a-girl-who-died-before-i-was

Promotion Heaven has rules. Hell has loopholes. My supernatural thriller, Redemption Post Mortem, was featured on Wrote a Book.

Hi everyone—I’m Emil Buchman, author of Redemption Post Mortem, a supernatural thriller blending urban fantasy, dark humor, and a slow-burn romance.
A recently deceased soul gets an offer from Heaven: find the lost Book of Remedies before Hell weaponizes it. Think Constantine meets Indiana Jones, with a bureaucratic afterlife inspired by Kafka.
Wrote a Book recently featured an interview with me about the novel, its research, and the question at its heart: what can human free will accomplish that angels and demons cannot?
Here’s the interview:
