Megathread UBC COURSE QUESTION, PROGRAM, MAJOR AND REGISTRATION MEGATHREAD (2021/2022W & 2021S): Questions about courses (incld. How hard is __?, Look at my timetable and course material requests), programs, specializations, majors, minors, tuition/finance and registration go here.

All questions about courses, instructors, programs, majors, registration, etc. belong here.

The reasoning is simple. Without a megathread, /r/UBC would be flooded with nothing but questions that apply to only a small percentage of the UBC population.

Examples of questions that belong here

  • comparing courses or instructors
  • asking about how hard an exam is
  • syllabus requests
  • inquiries about majors, programs, and job prospects
  • "what-to-do if I failed/was late/missed the cutoff"

What you don't need to post here

  • Post-exam threads (ex. 'How did you find the Birb 102 midterm)
  • rants, raves, shout-outs or criticisms of programs.
  • Other content that is not a question/inquiry

Process

  • It might take up to 4 hours for your post to be approved (except when we're sleeping).
  • Suggested sort is set to new, so new comments will always be the most visible.
  • You are allowed to repost the same question on the megathread at a reasonable frequency (wait at least a day after each post). This is true even if you've already gotten a response.**

hi guys, im currently not feeling well and won’t make it to my math 100 discussion class (ive already missed one class before). i haven’t found much information about the attendance requirements for the small classes, but they’ve clearly stated that we’re only allowed 1 absence throughout the term?? what would happen if i miss more than one class (will my mark be lowered or will i be unable to pass)? will an email to my small class instructor suffice for an excused absence or would i need to fill out a concession? sorry if this is a really dumb question but if anyone has had a similar situation in the past and could offer some advice i would really appreciate it! thanks a lot :)))

Fill out the calculus contact form and let them know you're sick. From the MATH100 syllabus:

If you are absent from additional small classes please complete the calculus contact form, briefly describing which small class you missed and why you were absent; in most cases of illness/injury supporting documentation is not required. Again it is expected you will be responsible for your own learning and catch up on missed material in your own time.

Hello, I'm an IBDP student who wants to apply to UBC for a Bachelor of Engineering. I am currently predicted 37 points but am missing Chemistry HL and SL. Currently, I have the following predicted grades:

6 in Physics HL.
5 in Psych HL.
6 in Global Politics HL (will drop to SL).
5 in Maths AA HL (likely to move up to 6 soon).
7 in English Lit and Lang SL.
6 in French B SL.

I am concerned because I don't understand what outstanding academically implies quantitatively, and emailing the university did not provide me with a set answer. I also don't have time to complete a high school course by the time I apply, as I currently have exams for a few weeks and need to apply by December 1st.
While I am missing Chemistry from my IB courses, I did achieve a grade 9 in Chemistry Triple Science GCSE and all other sciences, if that helps. Is it likely I'd be considered for engineering? If not, are there other alternatives at UBC that would allow me to transfer into engineering?
I am willing to take Chem 100 during the fall term and Chem 154 in the Summer term so I am caught up for my second semester, although I don't fully know if this is the typical measure for a chemistry-deficient student.

I also read about a test to skip Chem 100 in the summer before applying and move directly into the standard UBC Year 1; is this acceptable?

I apologise if I missed anything that already answers this, but I could not find further information on it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi, I’m taking VISA 180 next semester and I would like to start getting the supplies needed, and avoid having to purchase the $300 art supply kit.
Could anyone please help me out with the list of supplies needed? I am mostly looking for someone who purchased the kit and could tell me the sketch book and newsprint pad’s sizes you got, which size round and flat brushes are included, and the paint colours included in the kit. Also the colours of the Conté sticks and compressed charcoal would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Probably will failed math 100- what do I do?

Hello! I’m a first year in arts currently and wanting to either transfer into Sauder or purse Econ. However, I am almost sure I’ll fail math 100 this semester and am at an absolute loss at what to do.

To specialize in Econ, I would need both math 100 and math 101. Originally, my plan was to take math 100 now and math 101 in the summer, then apply with conditional admission. However, if I were to fail math in this semester, I wouldn’t have the chance to take 101.

I also know that Econ is a competitive major so failing math 100 would be a huge hit to my chances.

And if I do attempt to transfer into Sauder, I’d still require math 100. Failing the course would be horrible for my application. I’m doing fine in all of my other courses including Econ 101, so I’m just really nervous about the impact of a F in math 100.

I still have time before the drop deadline so dropping math 100 and getting a W instead of failing is still possible. Is that going to be better in terms of my chances at either specializing in Econ or transferring to Sauder? I would want to take the math 100 course available in the second semester in this case, however the only seats left are currently reserved. What are the chances that I’d be able to register for that course?

I’d be very grateful to hear other people’s opinions on the best course of action! Should I stick with the class and extend my degree? Should I drop the class?

Also, I’d aware that a bachelor of Econ is very math heavy! I’m not the best at math, however, I really am interested in Econ as a subject. I realize now that I have definitely been taking math 100 too lightly and will hopefully do better if I were to take it again😓.

Sorry for the word sludge, I’m just a bit panicked right now. I’ll head down to arts advising when I get a chance.

I think drop the class if youre wanting to get into sauder since GPA matters when applying to swap programs. I would also suggest you to talk to an academic advisor and let them know about your situation. They’re really helpful and I hope they can provide some alternative pathways to get into the other program. Good luck!

Is it possible to take an equivalent course online if you can’t get into a class? This might be a dumb question but I am genuinely wondering if it is possible. I really need to take PHYS 131 or 117 ASAP because I need 118 for my desired major (ideally i’ll take it over the summer) but because I was on the PHYS 100 waitlist I was unable to register for Phys 131 until the start of the semester. Now I am on the waitlist but I am very concerned about not getting in because I joined the waitlist late and I have a lot of other classes, including PHYS 119 so there might be an issue with getting me into a discussion section.

Would it be possible for me to take an equivalent class online? Has anyone ever done this?

You will not be able to use any credits taken at other institutions towards your degree for core science courses.

To be clear, is PHYS 118 a required course for applying to your specialization or just for graduating from your specialization?

If it's the former, summer is already too late. Summer courses do not count for specialization eligibility.

If it's the latter, usually 118 is offered summer term 2 anyway. So you would be able to take 131 or 117 in term 1 if you don't make it off the waitlist. You probably will though, there's a lot of movement in first year courses around the start of term.

hey everyone, im a bio major thinking of taking biology 210 as the second organismal course required for 2nd year, however, I've heard conflicting opinions on the course and my prof also doesn't have reviews. I would love if someone who's taken the course in the past 1-2 years could give me some insight? Thanks in advance

How easy is it to get chem 123 in the summer as a first year?

1

u/te3m4 4d ago

Like get into the course? Pretty easy! No wait lists were there at least when I did it in the summer (2025 summer). But if there is a waitlist it goes by quick so I wouldn’t worry about getting into this course

BIOL 200

I have gone to every lecture, and i’m doing the lecture problems, doing the pre readings, and plan on solving the problem sets.

Any study strategy/tips? And what is something helpful to put on the cheat sheet

1

u/Killer32108 10d ago

FNH 200

There's so much memorization and the content doesn't fit on the 1 sided 1 page cheat sheet they allow and all of it just seems like rote memorization. I feel like I'm gonna fail it because I'm not studying enough because they barely provide any study materials.

Is iclicker used in math, physics, and computer science courses? I don't have an iclicker. Should I get one?

6

u/Prestigious-Metal798 12d ago

You don’t need an actual iClicker device to do iClickers anymore. You can just download the app or go online to make an account on any device. Then just make sure you add whatever class you are in

Thank you!
