I wanted to give this review some thought after the demo has closed.
I played about 6 hours of the campaign on both a gaming laptop and gaming computer. My only tropico experience is from about 200 hours with Tropico 4. My favorite things about Tropico 4 were the music, the bold humor, the casual challenge, and being a zen city builder similar to roller coaster tycoon 2. I don't have much time for videogames these days and Tropico is one of the only ones I am looking forward to.
Performance: 4k 60fps was possible with my 3080 rig, but I struggled to get 2k 50fps on my gaming laptop with a 1660ti.
The good:
Everything I liked about Tropico 4 is here. Great music, bold humor (EX: Sawmill description: Tropican wood is prized for its blood red color), and a good casual challenge. The demo was a bit easy to make money, which I've heard others mention as well. Hopefully the economy is a bit more challenging than the demo, or we have difficulty settings. One of the better features of Tropico 4 was choosing presidente's traits and background skills which could really make the game a lot harder. Similar to choosing skulls in a Halo game.
The game is beautiful. However the pace of the demo felt really fast. Maybe it is because I haven't played the era system before this, but I always felt pressure to keep extending the mandate or doing stuff. In Tropico 4 the clock went so slowly and I would take breaks to peruse the village and watch the people in the town do their thing. I did not feel like I got this opportunity as much with the demo. Less zen.
Traffic was a challenge in Tropico 4 and the T7 demo addressed it in two great ways.
The direct transfer of goods is a cool realistic way to reduce traffic. Also that teamsters don't leave until 1500 goods reduces their presence. I never mess with public transportation as I find it too clumsy in city builders.
Other:
Yes the animated characters are a bit uncanny. However if you just watch it out of the corner of your eye, it's fine. I think this is the last place I would want devs spending time chasing value. I do prefer the old caricatures because they're both funny and also because it makes the game feel LESS real and immersive.
The pirate landmark thing doesn't bother me too much. Just don't do it? I'd rather have pirate interactions and maybe battles similar to fighting revolutionaries, as a minigame...
Ideas:
Upgrades should be on first screen. Too many screens is cumbersome. Tropico 4 did this very well.
More fun options at Theater, newspaper, school, etc... for operating modes
Description should be front and center. Move most things to the overview page.
Little icons and tooltips from tropico4 worked great to keep it clean and in one place
Put this game on GOG just like all the other tropicos so I don't need a connection to play.
Bugs likely to be fixed (likely just missing from demo because it is a work in progress):
Show fertility overlay when placing additional fields at plantation
Free rotation near other buildings is cumbersome. There should be a different key or way to engage it. I never place by grid, let me disable it in settings forever.
Economy way too easy. Should be punishing.
Does not show citizen happiness on main screen
No more hotkeys to open dock, almanac, etc..
Can't kill people
People can't starve
Negatively affected buildings marked red out of range of sphere. (i.e. there were red down arrows within the spehere, other buildings outside sphere still red.)
No tropico day edict with fireworks (maybe not in demo?).
All in all a great demo. I wish I had more time to play it. I will be pre ordering.
Bonus: I found a couple cuban stations with a similar playlist in my hunt for more Tropico music. https://onlineradiobox.com/cu/salsa/?cs=cu.salsa and https://www.radio.net/s/habanasoncuba
