No Spoilers PSA: Until you have discovered the meaning of the black obelisks, do not browse this subreddit

With a puzzle game like this, you want to work alone for as long as possible. But how do you know the point at which you can connect with the community?

Therefore, I’m letting you know that point. If you still don’t know what those odd black obelisks you’ve come across are for, leave the subreddit right now and keep playing my favorite game of all time.

We also get people asking for puzzle game recommendations looking to scratch that same itch The Witness did.

As a result, I'm going to start compiling some of these games in this megathread and keep it stickied. Feel free to comment with suggestions for more games to be added to the thread!

Star Wars Pit Droids

I'm going to level with you, I have no idea where you can legally acquire this game anymore. It can be easily emulated though...

Portal and Portal 2

It feels strange calling these 'classics' but they're both historical entries into the genre that will remain among the greatest for decades to come.

SPOILERS For those who played played both games how does the Order of the Sinking star compare to The Witness?

I´m thinking of buying the Order of the Sinking star, but haven´t been sure if it´s for me. What I liked about the Witness is that mostly you don´t have to go looking for puzzles as many other games do. You enter a place you see the panel, you know there is a puzzle to solve there. Aside it had a great variety of puzzle styles even if constrained to one system. Also everything had an air of mystique to it and most problems felt completely novel, at least for the first half the game.

What I´m mainly worrying about the Order of the Sinking star that it will get stale fast. The " push boxes around" puzzle type has been around forever and it has the tendency (at least for me) to not feel novel.

So I wanted to ask how you feel about the new game, without delving too much into spoilers.

Edit: I ended up buying the game and so far I´m glad I did. The puzzles feel a lot more varied than I expected. The only one gripe I have is too much talking by the characters. Why put so much banal dialogue in a game full of puzzles.

SPOILERS Mountain Door panel, what am I missing?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have been stuck on this one for some days, and I can't figure out what I am supposed to do, looking at the panel from a distance makes things worse..

I have been able to single out white symbols in order not to make them blink starting from both corners, but it doesn't work and the game apparently doesn't give any further hints as to what it's wrong.

I have also tried to use the panel looking from the little slids in the wooden planks, but to no avail.

I don't want to look up the solution, I would only like to have a little nudge, thanks in advance.

Temple_of_Glyphs——Inspired by the non-verbal philosophy of The Witness, I've been developing an inductive puzzle game about deciphering rules. What do you think?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
The Witness fundamentally changed how I view game design—specifically, the magic of letting the player experience true "epiphanies" without a single tutorial word holding their hand.
Inspired by that philosophy, I've been solo-developing Temple of Glyphs. The idea is that every puzzle board comes with a set of strict rules, but the rules are written entirely in an unknown symbolic grammar. To solve the board, you have to reverse-engineer what the glyphs mean through observation and logic.
I'm not sure if I fully succeeded, but I'd be honored to see if it evokes any of that feeling for you. There is a free demo on Steam:https://store.steampowered.com/app/5317010/Temple_of_Glyphs_Demo/
Would deeply appreciate any thoughts from you!

Whats the difference between these?

I assume its to do with fixed rotation and any rotation but i dont understand how to make the shapes if they dont touch the edge of the puzzle because then part of the shape is open and thus isn't the correct shape

Only one occurrence—is that enough for me to solve this puzzle? I feel like I’ve already looked everywhere.

Am I misunderstanding the rules? I thought they could be rotated

I found the "correct" solution and solved this. But can anyone explain why this is wrong?

SPOILERS Seeking guidance on next steps

I'm seeking some guidance on what do do next. Only slight nudges please

Heres where I'm at:
I have finished the game once and reloaded the save before the end. Save reports 437+105+2 solved

I don't have any unfinished panels that I found, other than two theater clips
I'm at 10 lasers with no obvious location for more I suspect the 11th might be the obelisks as I'm still missing some.

Still have not figured what the triangle puzzles are for

Should I keep going for environmental puzzles or is there more I can do in the meantime?

Also looking for tips on a specific puzzle:
There are some clouds in the sky which form a line but there is a grey cloud in between that doesnt allow me to complete it.

Is this even possible or does it just exist to throw me of?

EDIT: Apparently I've had 11 lasers for a while and did not know. Also I ended up solving the specific one :)

SPOILERS What other games will make me feel this way?

Hey yall!

I’ve played this game a few times over the years, and every time I start again, it really feels magical to me. The amount of rules and logic you learn without any kind of direct instruction is just so fascinating, and the world itself has always captivated me. I know I’m not alone in loving the environment and the style.

One other aspect I love his how closely connected the world is. For example, the location for the elevator at the end is so close to the swamp that you can almost see the ending area with the spiral pillars from the swamp, but first time through the game you wouldn’t notice anything very unusual. I love when you can experience something two different times and the first experience completely changes how you perceive the second experience, and there’s a lot of that in this game. I also really enjoy the secret doorways between so many areas of the map, especially those to under the mountain. The layers this brings to the game is exciting and makes me feel like I’m in on something.

I recently watched Cracking the Cryptic’s playthrough which I highly recommend! He’s brilliant and I loved watching him process the rules for the puzzles. Very peaceful watch and he expresses a very deep appreciation for the way the puzzles, player, and environment interact.

Anyway! I’m sure I haven’t said anything that hasn’t been said before but I’m feeling fixated on the game right now and just wanted to word-vomit to express my thoughts. What other games have you played that really change your perspective or give you the opportunity to feel like you were in on some big secret like The Witness has?

Edit: typo

Japan is 100% a mayor inspiration behind the game

These are some pics from my recent trip, I’ve posted some before. I just keep getting the same feeling I got from the game all around, anywhere I go, even this guy on this other post had something similar happen:

https://www.reddit.com/r/TheWitness/s/Gtxsk6vqps

I’m starting to be certain that the creator must have used some references, but as the other post says, nothing is confirmed it seems. I really recommend going to Japan if you love this game though!
