The David Pakman Show Gaza / Israel MEGATHREAD

Effective today, all posts and comments related to the Israel/Palestine conflict will be directed to this ongoing megathread. This applies to both article links and discussion submissions. Any new submissions on the subject will be removed and redirected to this megathread. This includes the nearly daily submissions asking "Why hasn't David talked about X" in relation to the conflict.

This conflict has been ongoing for nearly two years, and while we’ve allowed open discussion until now, the daily cycle of posts has come to dominate the space. Most users aren’t here for that constant back and forth, and over time it has continually crowded out other topics and made the community more hostile and unwelcoming than we would like.

After much consideration and discussion of community feedback, we’ve decided that consolidating all content into a megathread is the best balance. This is not an attempt to censor discussion. The goal is to make the topic easier to follow for those interested, while keeping the rest of the community accessible to those who are not. This effort will also make moderation more manageable and ensures a fairer space for all voices.

Please note that all subreddit rules still fully apply in this megathread. Please ensure that you are adhering to community rules while participating, specifically rule #1 (Please be civil and constructive at all times.) will be judiciously enforced. Please continue to use the report feature to bring rule violations to the attention of the mod team.

This thread will be stickied at the top of the subreddit for easy access. Comment sort order will be set to NEW so the latest contributions/news will always be on top.

Thanks for helping us keep the community constructive and manageable for everyone.

Article Trump is making it easier for fossil fuel companies to leak methane

Thumbnail

In its latest gift to oil and gas companies, the Trump administration is expected to announce plans today to weaken rules that guard against methane leaks.

“Methane is a smog-forming pollutant and a powerful greenhouse gas that’s up to 80 times as potent as carbon dioxide on a 20-year horizon. It’s the primary component of what the fossil fuel industry calls “natural gas” that routinely leaks from oil and gas wells and pipelines.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is reversing course on its previous efforts to plug those leaks. As part of President Donald Trump’s deregulatory agenda, the EPA plans to undo Biden-era rules that were expected to cut methane emissions by 80 percent over 14 years.”

“The EPA teased the rule change earlier this month, saying in a press release that it was “days away” from making the proposal. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin says the rollbacks will save oil and gas companies $45 billion, while the previous rules would have incurred $18 billion in regulatory costs.”

““This proposal takes on many of the problems American [oil and gas] producers and operators have raised with us,” Zeldin said in the October 7th press release. “The Trump EPA is committed to fixing this so the U.S. can reach its full energy potential.”
The agency is expected to step back standards for so-called “marginal wells” — old wells that produce little fuel but create an outsize amount of methane pollution from leaks. These wells are responsible for half of the industry’s methane emissions despite only producing 6 percent of US oil and gas, ProPublica reports. The EPA is also expected to end the Super Emitter Program that notified oil and gas infrastructure operators of large releases of methane reaching 100 kilograms per hour or more.
Trump plans to make the announcement from a campaign rally in Lubbock, Texas, today, Bloomberg reports. Not only is Texas the top oil– and gas-producing state in the US, it’s also the world’s biggest data center market. With more data center capacity under construction than any other state, Texas has become emblematic of the challenges energy-intensive AI models pose. In just five years, data centers could undo decades of air quality improvements in Texas, according to a recent report by the Houston Advanced Research Center.

“Methane has caused about 30 percent of global warming so far. But unlike carbon dioxide, which can linger in the atmosphere for hundreds or thousands of years, methane dissipates in a little over a decade. That makes eliminating methane emissions, particularly from unintentional leaks, one of the fastest and most straightforward ways to stop global temperatures from rising.
The EPA’s rollbacks quickly triggered furor from health and environmental advocates. “Any proposed rollback to the federal methane rule is a slap in the face to families who are exposed to oil and gas pollution where they live, work, and play,” Celerah Hewes, a senior manager for state field campaigns at Moms Clean Air Force, said in an email ahead of the expected announcement. “For over a decade, [our group] has been fighting for methane protections for our families—and we were making progress. Today’s announcement from EPA is a massive blow to the efforts to safeguard our children’s health and our climate.”

“The Biden-era methane rules were estimated to bring in up to $98 billion in benefits by reducing climate risks and health costs from air pollution, even after factoring in the costs of compliance. Plugging leaks was supposed to lead to up to $13 billion worth of recovered natural gas.”

Images/Memes/Infographics as a leftist, Obama campaigning for Abdul was brilliant move by the dems. it will shore up the votes lost from concern trolling moderate dems that will sit out or support rogers like they did in nyc against zohran. the midterms will be won by the DSA, normies, and conservative anti Trumpers.

It also isn't winning over voters. Republicans are not going to vote for a dem just because they are also a bigot. Truly pathetic strategy at work. "I will abandon you if you are a minority who's rights are unpopular" is not a winning message.

Discussion The Cost of Self-Interest

You can't just lay the blame at one door. Political movements don't happen in a vacuum. They are decades in the making. Years of chasing short-term self-interest and ignoring systemic issues have caught up with the culture. The reality is that the broader system, and our collective participation in it, created this environment.

We are still canvassing like we are down 10, but I know in my heart this was the point the election became unwinnable for Rogers.

Detroit went nuts for Obama, and this speech is everywhere on local social media today.

Identity politics can feel gross, but this event will undoubtedly carry the Detroit black vote for Abdul.

Discussion Voting while living with maga.

I want to vote but don’t want to be asked who I voted for by maga family, I plan on voting regardless, I live in Texas, but I was concerned bcz I easily found that I had voted previously on a popular website by searching my name, it doesn’t disclose for who, but I want to vote without having to say I did. I’m 21, people might say I’m cowardly, but there’s no point in even discussing politics with them, I’ve attempted from an objective and non partisan perspective in the past, and they still believe all the misinformation. So what I’m getting at is how can I protect my voter history? I don’t even want to discuss politics at all with people I love but believe in total nonsense.

TDPS Feedback & Discussion A dismaying experience with racism while voting in Michigan

Last week, David asked us to share where we voted and who we voted for. My family had a negative experience while voting in Michigan which I thought I would share with the sub.

Oct 24th was the first day of in person early voting in Michigan. It also happened to be my oldest son's 18th birthday and he was excited to vote for the first time. My wife, my son, and I headed to the voting location. We are progressives, El-Sayed supporters, and live in a very rural MAGA county.

My son made a mistake on his ballot and I was helping him spoil it. As I was out of earshot and busy helping him, an elderly white man said to my wife, completely unprompted, "I don't know about you, but I hope that Arab doesn't win." He pronounced it in the way that is understood as a racist perjorative. She was stunned and just walked away from him. She did not tell me about this until we were driving away, probably saving me from causing a scene.

When David talks about how we need to turn out voters in such significant numbers as to render the opposition politically irrelevant, this is who he is talking about. Entitled, racist old boomer white males who feel so secure in their bigotry as to blurt it out to complete strangers at polling stations.

These selfish, short-sighted boomers have nearly ruined this country. I am surrounded by them, and they are sadly all too real. We need to stop these people from ever having control of our government again.
