Mod Announcement Community/Subreddit Checkup and Discussion

As always i try to post a annual checkup on the community and the subreddit. Bit late this year as I've been busy with irl stuff and i dont no life reddit.

With that being said, how do yall feel about the current state of the sub, community, and rules, etc etc? Any input will be nice. If you have recommendations for new rules, flairs, etc please drop a comment. Every comment will be read and considered.

Seriously anything you want to bring up to us, the mods, drop a comment.

Please take in consideration this subreddit is practically moderated by one mod right now, as the other is usually inactive. So many things slip through. Hence why I have made a mod recruitment post.

Tank you Tankers for your time and continued support of our motorpool of a subreddit

Misc Dived the sunken T-34/85 at the Underwater Military Museum in Hurghada (Red Sea)

Hey everyone,

Thought you might appreciate this. I recently dived the Underwater Military Museum off the coast of Hurghada, Egypt.

Among several armored vehicles deliberatey sunk back in August 2023 to create artificial reefs, the absolute highlight is this intact T-34/85. It sits on the seabed (around 15–20m deep depending on the spot) and is already starting to get encrusted with marine life.

It’s pretty surreal seeing iconic WWII / Cold War armor sitting on white sand surrounded by fish.

Thought I'd share a frame from the footage!

Hello Everyone! I'm creating a PS1 era style game where you control a tank against the AI apocalypse where machines turned on humanity.

For those who grew up with these type of games and are nostalgic, you can play the Demo on steam! (and everyone else ofc)

Question Better Cold war era tank? M60 Patton or the t-62?

Post image

Curious to hear your opinions since I'm not really familiar with Cold war era tanks at all the only tank I can think of right now is the Abrams tank.

From what I've looked up apparently these two tanks are rivals or something during the cold war so which tank is better in your opinion?

Discussion Is gun depression really that important?

When I'm seeing these arguments online, I always feel like it comes from War Thunder players, because I feel like in real life tanks just don't fight in such hilly and close range environments and in fact being low-profile is more advantageous overall.

Discussion What do you think is the future of the T14 Armata?

I think it's pretty uncontraversal to say it's dead as a project now, even Russia says that it never made economic sense to produce and with the war demand, they opted to instead go back and maximize production of the T-90M.

Do think that, with that, Russia has fully abandoned any hope of a new generation of tanks, and they'll instead just keep upgrading the T-90 chassis, or would they go back and try another push and make a rebuild on the T-14 idea of bigger tanks with more production, likely not T14 itself it'll be an outdated concept by then maybe some sort of "T30" or something like that builds that direction change they never got to implement, or do you think tanks are going to be placed on the backburner since both ukraine and russia seem to be foucsing exclusively on land and air drones instead and no longer bothering with putting humans in metal boxes anyway apart from small breakthrough spearhead formations?

Question Why did Italy even design and produce the Ariete?

Post image
567 Upvotes

I know it was produced in relatively small numbers and hasn't any new productions since the early 2000s but why did they even make it instead of relying on the Leopard 1a5 and 2a4 designs accessible to them at the time? Is it an example of an attempt at showing pride and prestige by creating your own design or is there something more substantial behind it?

Question How do you calculate

How do you calculate effective armor thickness when the armor is sloped in BOTH directions (or axis or whatever should I say), such as for example the turret of M1A2, or the hull of IS-3?

Cold War Disabled M4A1E6 Sherman of C Sqn, 26th Cavalry Regt, Pakistan Army, Chhamb Sector 1971

Post image

6/12/1971:

M4A1E6 commanded by Captain Naqibullah Bangash, SJ, lead tank in a 4-tank troop from C Sqn, 26th Cavalry (attached to 111 Infantry Bde, operating on Koel-Chhamb axis) abandoned after running over an AT mine while supporting an assault by 3rd Frontier Force Regt on Point 994 overlooking Chhamb village.

After having cleared a path through the minefield, Capt Bangash would take over the sqn's "A" tank and advance unopposed into a hull-down position on top Point 994 overlooking Chhamb. In the ensuing firefight, the crew would fire no less than 15 rounds and succeed in destroying a T-55 and recoilless rifle. Capt Bangash's tank however would take a HEAT round to its right side resulting in loss of the entire crew sans driver & co-driver.

Facing T-54/55s of the Indian 72nd Armoured & Deccan Horse Regts, 26th Cavalry (supported by 28th Cavalry (Type 59s) & "Manto Force" (M36B2s)) would emerge from the conflict with 4 tank (T-54/55s), and 3 aircraft (Hunter, MiG-21, Su-7) kills to its name, for the loss of 4 of its own tanks. 24 men of the regt, including 3 officers, would be KIA. 26th Cavalry would also manage to capture 5 T-54/55s in running condition during this conflict, with these examples joining the regt after it converted to Type 59s.
