Welcome to r/Strangarium! 🔎

Hey everyone! I'm u/Revelator-of-v0id, the founder and moderator of r/Strangarium.

First off, welcome! I'm glad you've found your way here.

I created Strangarium as a place for people who share a fascination with the strange, obscure, and unexplained. From baffling disappearances and forgotten historical incidents to unusual encounters, bizarre coincidences, and peculiar circumstances that have left us scratching our heads, there's no shortage of mysteries worth exploring.

The name Strangarium combines Strange with -arium, a suffix referring to a place or collection.

Think of this subreddit as a growing archive of the world's more unusual stories.

📜 What to Post

There's plenty of room for different interests here. Some examples include:

  • Lesser-known disappearances and unresolved cases.
  • Strange historical events and forgotten incidents.
  • Unusual photographs, documents, and archival discoveries.
  • Bizarre coincidences and extraordinary real-world occurrences.
  • Obscure phenomena, curious locations, and unusual encounters.
  • Interesting theories, research, questions, and case discussions.

One thing worth mentioning: Strangarium isn't intended to be another paranormal or alien conspiracy subreddit.

We're more interested in the circumstances behind a mystery, what we actually know, and what questions remain unanswered.

🤝 Community Vibe

Curiosity is what brings us together, but you don't have to agree on everything.

Whether you're a skeptic, an avid researcher, or simply someone who enjoys a good mystery, you're welcome here. Different perspectives are encouraged, as long as discussions remain respectful and grounded in good faith.

When sharing real cases, especially those involving missing persons or their families, please be mindful of the people behind the stories. And whenever possible, include sources so others can explore the subject further.

🗝️ How to Get Started

  1. Introduce yourself! What kinds of mysteries or unusual cases interest you most?
  2. Share your first discovery. It could be an obscure case, an unusual photograph, an interesting article, or even a question you've been curious about.

  4. Interested in moderating? As the community grows, I'd welcome some extra hands. Feel free to reach out if you'd like to help out.

Strangarium is still in its early days, and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone brings to the archive.

Thanks for stopping by and being part of the community from the beginning. Here's to uncovering some fascinating stories together!

Some mysteries remain unsolved. Others remain undiscovered.

Visual Art | Crafts and Creations 🎨 Henry Darger: The Hospital Janitor Who Secretly Created a 15,000-Page Fantasy World 🎨📖

For decades, a quiet hospital janitor named Henry Darger lived in a small Chicago apartment. He was a reclusive individual and largely kept to himself and rarely socialized with his neighbors.

However, interestingly enough, what almost nobody knew was that he had spent much of his life creating a monumentally epic illustrated fantasy world.

Arguably, his magnum opus, In the Realms of the Unreal, spanned approximately 15,000 pages and followed seven young sisters, known as the Vivian Girls, fighting against an oppressive empire that enslaved children.

The story was accompanied by hundreds of elaborate illustrations depicting imaginary kingdoms, fantastical creatures, sprawling natural landscapes, and brutal battles.

When Darger moved into a nursing home in 1972, his landlords discovered the extraordinary collection of manuscripts and artwork he had left behind. His creations would eventually earn him recognition as one of the most remarkable figures in outsider art.

What fascinates me most is that Darger spent decades building this entire fictional universe, seemingly without any intention of sharing it with the wider world.

It makes you wonder how of just how many other extraordinary creations have remained undiscovered simply because their creators never shared them 🤔

Historical Enigma's🗿 The Piri Reis Map: A 500-Year-Old Cartographic Mystery 🗺️

One historical mystery I've always found fascinating is the Piri Reis map, a surviving fragment of a world map created in 1513 by Ottoman admiral and cartographer Piri Reis.

The map itself is impressive enough. It depicts parts of Europe, Africa, the Atlantic, and the Americas at a time when European knowledge of the New World was still developing. Piri Reis also noted that he drew upon several older maps and sources when putting it together, some of which no longer survive today.

But there's one particular part of the map that has generated quite a bit of debate over the years.

Toward the south is an unusual stretch of coastline. Some researchers and writers, most famously Charles Hapgood, believed it could represent Antarctica without its ice sheet. If true, that would raise a pretty extraordinary question: where could that geographical knowledge have come from centuries before Antarctica was officially discovered?

It's an intriguing idea, but also a very controversial one. Most historians and cartographic scholars do not accept the Antarctica interpretation, and other explanations suggest the coastline may simply be a distorted continuation of South America or the result of the mapmaking conventions and geographical knowledge available at the time.

Still, even without the Antarctica theory, something is fascinating about looking at a map created more than 500 years ago from a collection of even older sources, some of which have since been lost.

I wonder what exactly Piri Reis was trying to depict along the southern coastline? 🧐

Antarctica? A distorted South America? An imagined southern landmass? Or simply one of the many quirks of early cartography?

Oddly Amusing 🥳 What Do Vikings and Wireless Technology Have in Common?: From Ring Fortresses to Wireless Networks...The Legacy of Harald Bluetooth ᚼᛒ🛜

Thumbnail

In a recent post that I made about the mysterious Viking ring fortresses, I made a note about how King Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson (Old Norse, Haraldr Blátǫnn Gormsson) was the main individual responsible for overseeing several large-scale construction projects (which included the network of various ring fortresses) in Denmark.

However, the interesting tidbit is that 'Bluetooth Technology' was named after the king in 1997, based on the analogy that Bluetooth would "unite" devices the way Harald 'Bluetooth' united the various tribes of Denmark into a single governing kingdom (source).

The Bluetooth logo even consists of a Younger Futhark bind rune for his initials, H (ᚼ) and B (ᛒ)

I always do find it fascinating to learn more about how things and concepts came into being based on historical figures and past events in history ;)

Historical Enigma's🗿 The Mysterious Viking Ring Fortresses | Why Were They Built? ⚔️🛡️

Thumbnail

In the late 10th century (between 970 and 980 CE), during the reign of King Harald ‘Bluetooth’ Gormsson, several enormous circular fortresses were constructed across Denmark.

What I found particularly interesting was the fortresses' remarkably precise design.

Each featured circular ramparts and carefully arranged entrances, suggesting a coordinated construction effort on an impressive scale.

But why were these magnificent structures built, and why do they appear to have been used for such a short period of time?

Historians have proposed several explanations, including military defence, preparations for overseas campaigns, administrative control or tax collection centers, as well as efforts to consolidate royal power.

Yet their exact roles remain open to interpretation.

Five of these fortresses were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2023.

  • What do you think their primary purpose might have been?
  • Were they defensive strongholds, symbols of royal authority, or something else entirely?

Every person has three faces. A deeply resonating piece of wisdom.

  • The First Face: This is the polite, professional version of you that everyone else sees. It's the daily mask you wear to get through work, school, and public life smoothly.
  • The Second Face: This is the relaxed, casual side of you. You drop your guard and share this version only with your family, partner, and closest friends.
  • The Third Face: This is your absolute reality. It's your secret inner life...the private thoughts, fears, and dreams that you keep entirely to yourself.

Are there any sayings or old proverbs that stood out to you the most in life?

Unusual Phenomena 🌀 🐬 Born Gifted? The Unusual Phenomenon of Dolphin-Assisted Pregnancies

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Did you know that some expectant mothers have deliberately exposed their pregnant bellies to dolphins in the belief that their unborn children might develop greater intelligence, heightened awareness, or even psychic abilities?

The practice is associated with alternative prenatal therapies and New Age beliefs surrounding dolphins and their supposed extraordinary connection with humans.

During the 1980s, Soviet waterbirth pioneer Igor Charkovsky promoted unconventional childbirth practices involving dolphins and ideas about their spiritual connection with humans.

The phenomenon received renewed attention in 2005, when reports emerged from Peru of pregnant women visiting dolphins in hopes that the animals' high-frequency sounds could stimulate their unborn babies' brain development. Some women even reported feeling their babies respond to the dolphins' vocalizations.

The proposed explanation revolves around echolocation, the biological sonar dolphins use to navigate and perceive their surroundings. Some proponents believe these sound waves could influence a developing baby's brain, while more mystical interpretations have attributed telepathic or psychic properties to dolphin-human interactions.

However, there is no credible scientific evidence that exposure to dolphins makes unborn children more intelligent or gives them psychic abilities. Research into dolphin-assisted therapies has also raised serious questions about their supposed benefits.

Still, it's a rather unusual example of how animal intelligence, alternative medicine, and mystical beliefs can intersect.

What do you make of this phenomenon? An interesting cultural curiosity, or simply another case of pseudoscience taking on a life of its own?

Myth, Folklore & Legend 🪽 The Cosmic Secret Behind the Unicorn: Why It’s Actually a Lunar Myth 🌙

Ever wonder why the unicorn became such a massive mythological icon? It turns out its history is way wilder than just fairy tales and sparkles.

Back in 1881, a scholar named Robert Brown did a deep dive into comparative mythology and realized that ancient cultures actually viewed the unicorn as a giant lunar symbol. Across Northern European, Vedic, and Zoroastrian traditions, that single horn wasn't just a weapon. It represented the crescent moon slicing through the night sky. Its pure white coat reflected the moon's radiant light, and its elusive, untamed nature perfectly mirrored the ever-changing lunar phases. It was even closely tied to ancient night deities like Hekatê.

This celestial framing completely changes how we look at the famous heraldic imagery of the Lion and the Unicorn. Mythologists suggest their eternal conflict is actually a massive astronomical metaphor. The golden lion represents the solar strength of the Sun, while the unicorn represents the silver glow of the Moon. Their legendary battle is just a cosmic dance of day conquering night, and night inevitably returning to reclaim the sky.

Let's discuss:

  • Had you heard about the sun and moon connection between the lion and the unicorn before?
  • What other mythical creatures do you think might secretly be hidden symbols for space or nature?

Visual Art | Crafts and Creations Eerie Creations: Taking a closer look at the Haunting World of "Murderabilia" 🎭 Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Murderabilia, which refers to items and memorabilia tied to notorious criminals, can be deeply unsettling to look at. This is especially true when it comes to artwork. Knowing the background of the person who created the piece, and the dark mindset they held, adds a heavy layer of context to every single brushstroke and pencil line.

Over years of reviewing true crime cases and studying these individuals, a few specific pieces of artwork have stood out as particularly haunting:

  • John Wayne Gacy’s Pogo the Clown Illustrations: These oil paintings are probably the most famous examples of prison art. They are profoundly disturbing because they depict the exact persona Gacy used to disarm his community and lure in his victims.
  • Andre Crawford’s "First Kill" Artwork: Crawford's rough, dark pencil sketches are intensely grim. They often explicitly reference the macabre details and locations tied to his crimes in Chicago.
  • Issei Sagawa’s Cannibalistic Paintings: Sagawa did not just paint to pass the time. He actively illustrated graphic, stylized depictions of the specific acts he committed, turning his obsession into a deeply disturbing visual diary.
  • Henry Lee Lucas’s Demonic Art: Best known for painting grotesque, sharp-toothed monsters with bleeding fangs, Lucas’s art serves as a striking visual metaphor for the inner chaos and self-described demons that drove his violent life.

Art offers a unique glimpse into a person's psyche, and in these cases, that window looks into a very dark place.

Which pieces of true crime art have stood out the most to you? Do you have others in mind that you would add to this list?

Historical Enigma's Lost Treasures of History: The Amber Room ✨

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Context: The Amber Room was a chamber decorated in amber panels and backed with golden leaves and mirrors, which were located in the Catherine Palace of Tsarskoye Selo near Saint Petersburg.

The Amber Room was constructed in the 18th century in Prussia which was commissioned by the then King of Prussia (King Frederick I) and designed by baroque sculptor Andreas Schlüter.

It was regarded as a priceless piece of art, that possesses extraordinary architectural features, such as gilding, carvings, (450 KG or 990 pounds) worth of amber panels, gold leaf, gemstones, and mirrors. All highlighted in candlelight.

As a result of the Amber Room's breathtaking and uniquely sculpted features, it was regarded as the "Eight Wonder of the World". Modern estimates of the room's value range from $142 million (2007) to over $500 million (2016). Source.

Disappearance: However, during 1941, Nazi Germany forces had invaded the Soviet Union, dismantled the room entirely, and shipped the panels to Königsberg Castle in East Prussia where it was later reassembled and displayed in the city's castle (source).

Ultimate Fate?

As world war two reached it's end in 1944, the room had vanished. It's true fate remains one of history's greatest unsolved artistic mysteries.

Theories:

  • Destroyed by Allied Bombing: Many historians believe the amber panels were completely wiped out in late August, 1944. This happened when British Royal Air Force bombers heavily damaged Königsberg Castle, which was the last known place holding the room.

  • Burned by Soviet Troops: Another common theory is that the room actually survived those air raids but caught fire later. In April 1945, Soviet Red Army troops captured Königsberg and accidentally or intentionally set fire to the castle ruins, destroying whatever was left inside.

  • Hidden in Underground Bunkers: Some researchers argue that Nazi officials packed the room into crates one last time and buried it. They think it could be hidden inside an abandoned salt mine, a secret tunnel network, or underground bunkers like the Mamerki complex in Poland.

  • Sunk in the Baltic Sea: A final theory points to the water. Some believe the crates were loaded onto a German transport ship like the Wilhelm Gustloff or the Karlsruhe during the evacuation of East Prussia in 1945, and both of those ships were torpedoed and sunk by Soviet submarines.

What do you all think? Happy to hear some of your theories as to the penultimate fate of the Amber Room.

Unusual Phenomena Spotlight: Australia's Bubblegum Pink Lake 🫧

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

Lake Hillier is an isolated lake located on the edge of Middle Island, which is the largest of the islands that make up the Recherche Archipelago in the Goldfields-Esperance region, off the south coast of Western Australia.

From an aerial view, the lake does appear as a solid bubblegum pink colour, whereas from the shoreline the colour is reported to be more of a pink hue.

The cause of the bubblegum pink colour is attributed to the high salinity content found in the lake, coupled with microorganisms including Dunaliella salina, a red algae which causes the salt content in the lake to create a red dye which helps produce the bright pink colour, as well as red halophilic bacteria, bacterioruberin, present in the salt crusts (source).

It is actually safe to swim in the water for humans (despite the high salinity content present) and the lake exhibits no known adverse effects upon humans.

In recent years, however, Lake Hillier's bubblegum pink colour is beginning to fade away (partially due to a higher volume of rainfall which dilutes the lake's salt levels).

However, scientists ascertain that the change in appearance is only temporary, with the pink colour and hue expected to return as water levels decrease (source).

It is always fascinating to me to learn about the unusual natural phenomena that affect the various ecosystems on Earth. Truly, our planet is home to some of the most bizarre (and yet) breathtakingly beautiful natural phenomena known to humankind.

Cryptic Photographs Mysterious circumstances surrounding the elusive “Babushka/Headscarf Lady” 📸

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I always found the scenario involving the Babushka lady intriguing to say the least.

One of the closest witnesses of the JFK assassination that occurred in 1963, who may have also supposedly snapped a picture during the actual event of the incident.

  • Who was she? How did she end up so close to the actual scene of the crime?
  • Was she really holding what appears to be a camera in her hand during the scene of the incident?

We are still not closer to uncovering the truth behind who she was and whether she was complicit in the assassination or not.

One interesting point of observation:

Headscarves (at the time during the 1960s) were a popular form of clothing for women and so, she might have also been a local women living in the area who somehow managed to get very up close and personal during the actual event.

Could she have been there for surveillance purposes? Perhaps to act as a spotter of some sort and report her findings to whomever she was working/affiliated with?

Or maybe, the simplest explanation is that she could have just been a random stranger to the actual crime and did not want to be in the limelight out of the fear of being heavily publicized.

Hence, why they never came forward and the case ultimately went cold for over 60 years now.

Either way, it is quite the unusual event.

Would be keen to hear what theories you all think could be the case here.

Does anyone else remember reading through the Goosebumps novels as a kid? R.L. Stine was honestly such a goated author and legend.

I used to love reading these books and even watching the TV series when I was a kid growing up.

I really enjoyed the settings, characters, and plots, as well as the weird plot twists featured in some of the books.

On that note, what was one really weird or unexpected moment you found unusual when reading through some of the books in the series?

For me, I'd say maybe Egg Monsters from Mars and Welcome to Dead House honestly got me feeling pretty unnerved as a kid.

What about you all? Would be keen to know what books from the series stood out to you the most in terms of overall creep or weirdness factor.

Cryptic Photographs 👁️ The Strange and Unnerving Case of Patricia Meehan

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I've always been a bit perturbed about this case as I found that a lot of the details surrounding the incidents leading up to and afterwards were quite perplexing.

Background Context:

On the night of April 20th, 1989, 37 year old Patricia Bernadette Meehan was driving erratically on Highway 200 near Circle, Montana. Her car crossed the center line and crashed head-on into an oncoming vehicle driven by an off-duty police dispatcher.

What happened right after the crash made this case famous. Instead of waiting for help or checking on the other driver, Patricia climbed out of her wrecked car and stood by the road. Witnesses reported that she had a completely blank stare and looked right through them without saying a word, acting more like a spectator than someone who had just been in an accident. She then walked to a nearby fence, climbed over it, and vanished into a dark, open field.

Suspected Sightings following the car crash:

  • The Highway Trail: In the weeks right after the crash, people spotted a woman matching her description moving east through Minnesota and South Dakota.
  • The Restaurant Lead: By June 1989, a waitress at a Perkins Restaurant in Bozeman, Montana, was certain she served Patricia. Her parents rushed to the town to look for her, but they were too late.
  • The Pacific Northwest: Over 25 different people reported seeing her at truck stops along highways leading to Seattle. Witnesses consistently said she looked dirty, deeply confused, and was talking to herself.
  • The Seattle & Idaho Incidents: She was spotted several times in Seattle, which is where her ex-boyfriend lived. Most frustratingly, a woman matching her exact description was actually arrested for littering in Idaho, but police released her before anyone realized she might be the missing woman.

Primary Theories:

  • Severe Amnesia: The most prominent theory is that Patricia suffered a severe head injury during the crash, causing her to forget who she was. This would explain her blank behavior at the scene and why later sightings described a woman wandering aimlessly from town to town without ever contacting her family.
  • Foul Play: Because she was dazed, alone, and walking along a dark highway, some believe she may have hitched a ride or been picked up by someone with malicious intentions.
  • Succumbed to the Elements: Another possibility is that she didn't make it out of the immediate area and died of exposure or injuries in the rough terrain or nearby creekbeds, though no remains or clothing have ever been found.
  • Intentional Disappearance: Some speculate that she used the accident as an opportunity to walk away from her life due to her fragile mental state, perhaps slipping away unnoticed by hitchhiking or hopping onto a hay truck seen nearby.

The image's of Patricia I find are quite cryptic and unusual taken in the months prior to and leading up to her dissapearance.

Unexplained Disappearances ❓Unresolved Mystery: Disappearance of Brandon Victor Swanson

Thumbnail

In 2008, a 19 year old student by the name of Brandon Swanson was driving home late at night in the state of Minnesota (USA). Around 2:00 AM, his car went off the road into a ditch. He wasn't immediately hurt, so he called his parents to ask for a ride.

Brandon told them he could see the lights of a nearby town and decided to start walking toward them. He stayed on the phone with his parents while they drove out to meet him, but they couldn't find him. Even when they flashed their headlights, Brandon said he couldn't see them.

For nearly 50 minutes, Brandon walked and talked calmly with his parents.

Then, he suddenly uttered the words, “Oh, shit,” and the call cut out. His parents tried calling back right away. The phone rang, but he never answered.

The police eventually found his car, but it was nowhere near the location Brandon had described. Search teams thoroughly checked the surrounding fields, farms, and rivers, but they never found a single trace of him. His clothing and phone were never recovered.

To this day, the case remains open. No one knows what Brandon saw or what caused his sudden reaction before the line went dead, making it one of the most baffling missing person mysteries in the United States and on an international level.

What do you all think could have happened? A case of accidental drowning or was foul play involved somehow?

Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Historical Enigma's ☀️1917 Milagre do Sol (Miracle of the Sun - AKA Miracle of Fátima)

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

Background context:

In spring 1916, three young Catholic shepherds near Fátima, Portugal, reported seeing an angel. By May 1917, they claimed to see the Virgin Mary, whom they called the Lady of the Rosary. The children said she promised that prayer would end World War I and vowed to reveal her identity and perform a miracle on October 13, 1917, to prove her words.

As press coverage grew, pilgrims flooded the area. However, the children's claims sparked fierce backlash from both secular and church officials. A local administrator even jailed them briefly, suspecting the prophecies were a political stunt aimed at undermining the secular First Portuguese Republic.

The event:

During the day of the actual phenomenon, newspapers at the time reported extraordinary solar activity such as the sun appearing to "dance" or do odd movements such as "zig-zags" through the sky. Some supposed eyewitness testimonies also stated that the sun had started to emit multicoloured light and radiant colours while descending closer to the Earth.

Likely explanation?

The event has been widely analyzed through scientific and sociological lenses. Critics argue that the eyewitness testimonies are actually inconsistent and contradict one another. Alternative theories suggest that onlookers were simply deceived by their own senses after staring at the Sun for too long, causing them to see exactly what they expected to see.

Thoughts? Was there any weight to what the onlookers had to say or experience? Or was this simply a case of mass hysteria?

Are there any scientific explanations that could be provided to explain such an event?

Uncharted Mysteries 🏝️On the topic of Phantom Island's: Hy Brasil

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hy Brasil is a supposed phantom island that is said to reside somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Ireland.

According to Irish folklore, the island is said to be wrapped in a thick fog and only appears out of the mist once every seven years (source).

There have been many expeditions back in the late 1400s/early 15th century and even sailor's like Captain John Nisbet in 1674 had claimed to have landed on the island at one point during his expeditions, but his claims were later rebuked as having experienced an optical illusion such as a Fata Morgana or a bank of clouds instead of an actual island.

Either way, I find the whole idea of phantom island's fascinating. Imagine if we were to uncover an island full of hidden ecosystems, as of yet undiscovered flora/fauna species, or even actual thriving settlements containing uncontacted tribes folk living a secluded lifestyle.

Of course, we should respect the native population that inhabit these far off island's but the possibility of encountering such remote island's is still a valid possibility.

That said, what do you all think about the mysteries surrounding uncharted territories like phantom island's? This has always been a fascinating topic of mine to read into in the past (and present).
