Go Whistle Cessation
Hi everyone!
My family checked out a few open houses over the weekend and we checked out one on Vera Lynn. We noticed that it is about a 3 minute walk from the Hoover train crossing but read online that the whistle cessation will start very soon. I was curious about the horns/whistle from Main Street crossing. It is about an 11 minute walk away from the house we checked out. Anyone know if that would be close enough for it to be quite loud inside the house? Im guessing the whistle cessation for main street will take a year or so to be in effect? Thank you!

2025–26 EQAO results are out — here’s how Stouffville’s public elementary schools compared
I was looking through the latest EQAO results for 2025–26 and thought I’d share a comparison of the public elementary schools in Whitchurch-Stouffville.
The numbers represent the percentage of fully participating students who met or exceeded the provincial standard (Level 3 or 4).
Grade 6 Results
School Reading Writing Math Whitchurch Highlands 100% 100% 90% Spring Lakes 98% 98% 76% Barbara Reid 95% 95% 68% Harry Bowes 91% 93% 66% Summitview 94% 97% 58% Oscar Peterson 91% 87% 50% Wendat Village 89% 86% 51% Glad Park 87% 90% 43% Ballantrae 76% 68% 36% York Region DSB 89% 90% 64% Ontario 86% 85% 52%
School results rounded to the nearest whole percentage.
Grade 3 Math Results
School Math Spring Lakes 88% Wendat Village 83% Glad Park 81% Oscar Peterson 81% Whitchurch Highlands 75% Harry Bowes 72% Barbara Reid 67% Summitview 67% Ballantrae 63% York Region DSB 71% Ontario 65%
A few things I found interesting:
- Whitchurch Highlands and Spring Lakes had particularly strong Grade 6 results. Whitchurch Highlands reached 100% in reading and writing, while Spring Lakes reached approximately 98% in both.
- Spring Lakes performed well in its first available EQAO results, particularly Grade 3 math (88%) and Grade 6 literacy (98%).
- Math results varied considerably between schools. Grade 6 math ranged from 36% to 90%, compared with the Ontario average of 52%.
- Several schools exceeded the provincial averages in reading and writing but had more mixed results in math.
Important context
EQAO results are only one measure of school performance, and there are a few limitations worth considering.
First, cohort sizes vary. Whitchurch Highlands had approximately 20 fully participating Grade 6 students, compared with approximately 63 at Spring Lakes. A difference of just a few students can significantly change the percentages.
Second, Spring Lakes is a single-track French Immersion school. Its Grade 3 English EQAO results are available for math, but not reading and writing, so a full Grade 3 comparison isn’t possible. French Immersion enrolment can also involve selection effects.
Finally, these are results from one school year, not a measure of how much a particular school improved students’ learning. Student backgrounds, cohort differences and other factors can influence the results.
Source: EQAO’s publicly available 2025–26 Grade 3 and Grade 6 achievement data and YRDSB’s provincial assessment reporting.
I’m curious what other parents in Stouffville think.
For those with children attending these schools, do the EQAO results reflect your experiences? Are there schools whose academic performance, teaching quality or overall environment have particularly impressed you?
Would love to hear some firsthand experiences beyond just the numbers!

‘Be Careful’: Upton Responds as Residents Challenge His Account of Harassment Findings
Days before Stouffville’s Oct. 26 municipal election, a flyer delivered directly to Ward 4 mailboxes has placed Councillor Rick Upton’s workplace harassment findings at the centre of the campaign.
It arrives as multiple Ward 4 residents say Upton has described the Integrity Commissioner findings differently at their doors than he did in a public apology before Council last December. One says he cast the process as an effort by Mayor Iain Lovatt to push him out of office.

Looking for Advice on Starting a Small Baking Business
Hello everyone! ❤️
I’ve been thinking about starting a little side hustle, even though I’m working and studying full-time. I guess we could all use an extra source of income, especially when my husband and I have some really beautiful goals and dreams we want to achieve together. 🥹
I absolutely LOVE baking! I make sourdough bread, ciabatta, and lots of different sweet treats. I’ve been thinking about turning this hobby into something more and possibly starting a small home baking business. Of course, I would make sure to get all the necessary permits and follow the regulations.
I’m just not sure if this is something worth pursuing, so I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Would you buy homemade bread and baked goods from someone local? And if you already sell baked goods, I’d really appreciate any advice about getting started, finding customers, pricing, and balancing it all with a busy schedule.
I’d love to hear your honest opinions and experiences. Thank you! ❤️

Where to refill propane tanks? Not exchange?
Now that Costco is phasing it out where can I refill bbq propane tanks?
Edit: Thanks for all the options! I went to the Ultramar just north of the dealership and the refill was about $25. Costco used to be about $15 but I haven't been recently. One of my tanks was expired so I did an exchange at Canadian tire for $33.

Does anyone remember the Stouffville Country Market?
The Stouffville Country Market opened in 1952 by a guy named Walter Atkinson. It originally started as Stouffville Stockyards for Saturday livestock auctions. Under the subsequent ownership of Norm Faulkner, Frank Bennet, and eventually Norm Clements, it became "The Big Flea" and it attracted 10,000 weekly visitors and it hosted 600 vendors at it's peak. People could purchase fresh farm produce, livestock, and a local butcher to antiques, hardware, and unique collectibles. In 2005, the property was sold to residential developers, but the market released a series of reprieves that allowed it to continue for another 11 years. I remember the last time I went in 2016, but I do not remember if I went on their last operating day or a few months before they closed. In May 2017, the historic barns, silo, and stalls had gotten demolished to clear land for housing developments. After the demolition, a liquidation branch opened called Stouffville Market And Liquidation and it turned into a format with a physical cash and carry pickup storefront currently operating in Uxbridge. It has been 10 years since the market closed and 9 years since the building was demolished, and they STILL didn't start the damn construction! The market could've easily ran a few more years.

Does anybody remember the abandoned Ringwood Diner?
So in 1986, a diner opened on the intersection of Highway 48 and Stouffville Road called Ringwood Diner. But 21 years later, it shut down in 2007. The building has been left abandoned for at least 17 years and during those 17 years, it went through many failed attempts to relocate the building. And it has been sitting there since my family moved to Stouffville. The building was finally demolished in January 2024 and Flato Developments currently owns the property and they'll eventually turn it into a plaza called "Stouffville Plaza" that includes a KFC in it.
