This is how I sound when I talk. I barely have any friends and family react to my videos and want to get more of an outside perspective on whether I’m that bad that my friends and family don’t react to my singing videos on social media. What do you think? Is it that bad? Thanks in advance for your input 🙏

Conversation Topic Why exactly did Robert Plant lose his voice?

I've been watching some Chris Liepe (the greatest) and his vidoes on mixed voice always mention both/either chris cornell and robert plant. from what i understand you need impeccable support and technique to even slide into the mixed voice. So how exactly did he lose his voice if he was doing it with such technique

About 26 seconds into this clip (I was sort of logging a sing idea to write more lyrics to later) I go into a head voice to sing the lyrics. This is a sound I generally only use for the odd word, as I have a low voice ordinarily, and throughout my life I’ve been sort of embarrassed or self-conscious of using this register, so I’ve sort of neglected it.

I’m very much a guitar-player who sings and not a singer who plays guitar, but I’m trying to be more if a singer now that I’m older and less ashamed to use my voice!

I wanted to get some genuine opinions on whether:

A: this is a good/useable sound that I should sing in more often.

B: whether it’s so sonically different than my chest voice that it sounds silly using both in a song.

C: I can strengthen this to sound fatter — it’s plenty powerful volume-wise but it feels so thin to me whilst I’m doing it and it requires barely any effort but when I do use effort it goes into a raspy sound that I don’t think I like.

Honest opinions gratefully received 🙏🏻

Conversation Topic BEST COMPLIMENTS EVER.

So the other day I was going to AAU (or whatever it is) basketball practice. We didnt have a bus or anything so my coach drove 6 girls, which included me, my brother was in the trunk becuase he couldnt be at home alone, and the coaches son was back there with my brother. SO were driving on the freeway and people are recommending songs and singing them. I recommend a song and start listening. And, I kid you not, the girl next to me is like "arent you gonna sing? You recommended the song so you gotta do it" and I agreed becuase that made sense. So were singing the song and it gets to a decently difficult high note. I hit that shit. The girls started cheering while the next person was singing, and when we get to the next song, it was that one popular song with the crazy hughnote dead in the beginning and first chorus (its not Adele or anything. The song was called Love but I forgot the artist) and I hit that shit to.

So fast foward to today, the crossing guard was talking to me while I was waiting to cross. She asked me what highschool I wanted to go yo and I said ChiArts becuase I live in Chicago and I love music and the arts in general. The crossing guards daughter, WHO WAS IN THE CAR WHEN WE WERE SINGING, dead ass said to her mother "Yeah! She can sing amazing!"

That was the day my heart blew up with happiness.

Ps. I had my violin with me and a little girl was crying. I taught her about the instrument and it made her happy. Today was a good day.

Conversation Topic How do K-Pop male singers manage to sing this high comfortably?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is not the style I aspire to sing in but I am a tenor and have been taking voice lessons for 4 months now. I am gently learning to sing a D4 in chest, how do these tenors manage to sing comfortably all the way up to G#4? My voice stops after D#4 and I occasionally sing an E4 without any proper control or good technique.

Is my lack of upper register the issue? My head voice is basically nonexistent. Have never practiced it and I don’t know how, most exercises don’t feel ‘good on my voice’ and I can’t ever find exercises that cater to beginners. Everything seems out of my range and too demanding on my voice, it doesn’t sound nice when I do it. It feels counterproductive and oversimplifies technique to me.

Conversation Topic When a male/female do a duet, does the female usually sing the higher harmony?

is there a reason? I understand they are just naturally higher than male voices.

an example, Everly Bro Let it be me, Phil took the higher harmony, but in 1974 when he sang live with Cillia black it seems that he took the lead which was the lower harmony, it seemed natural though but he was used to singing the higher part.

Did Linda mccartney sing higher parts than Paul on the Wings?

Any suggestions on my singing here? I tried to do my best all the way through, considering that it was one of my best vocal days (I'm usually capable of around 80-90% of this video, vocally, on normal days).

I'm still working on improving this, so this won't be the final take. This time, I switched mics lol

The reverb is from the small space since I'm close to the corners.

What changed this time:

I'm no longer pushing the chest voice.

Added some vibrato.

Currently in the process of looking for a vocal coach in my local area...

I need some notes/feedback, again. What should I focus on next?

Thank you!

It's just I really love singing those pretty ethereal songs with high notes but I'm a guy, so is that like against some rules or something? Like I have to lower the key or the song police will come after me?

so i’ve been trying to sing jazz more and i sang misty with some kids at my school and i noticed that when i go higher, obviously my tone becomes brighter. but in the recordings i listen to like ella fitzgerald or sarah vaughan, they keep that darkness. what should i focus on in order to keep that darkness in my higher notes?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Advice Requested: My throat hurts even when I sing with proper technique!

I (27F) have been taking voice lessons for 3 months, but am still dealing with pain in my throat when singing, and we aren't even using words yet.

I have tried several voice coaches and finally found one who has been able to make some progress with me! He is very knowledgeable and encouraging, but I am feeling quite frustrated with myself as 3 months later I am still dealing with the pain several times in a lesson, and we haven't even used words yet. I trust my teacher, but am curious if anyone has any insights or ways of describing things that we haven't thought of. Any advice would be welcomed!

Side notes: most of the time people only know it hurts when I tell them. My tone/pitch is pretty good, and I only sound like I'm straining when my voice is ready to give out (I no longer sing to this point). Singing in my head voice with vibrato is the most comfortable for me right now.

These are some things I am already mindful of, since this is usually the most common advice.

  • Breathing with support from my diaphragm
  • Relaxing my throat/larynx (this is difficult for my to physically feel - I do lots of yawning during lessons to work on this + lifting my soft palate, and manually manipulating with my hands has helped a lot as well)
  • Relaxing my tongue
  • Always warmup
  • Hydrate beforehand
  • Keeping good posture
  • Practice on my own every other day + never push through the pain
  • There are obviously many other things but this list is already long lol

Thank you in advance! I'm a trained dancer, and would love to audition for musical theatre shows in the future, but obviously cannot do that until I get over this issue/have a rep book/etc. :)

I am not the most confident with my voice as I feel like it is too bland. I am really inspired by Karen Carpenter vocals, and how smooth and clear they are. I really want my voice to emulate that - for my vocals to sound like I am singing directly to you, if that makes sense. Please tell me what you think. Be honest with me. I really want to improve. My breathing technique is not the best. In fact, my singing technique is not the best, but I want to work on it.

Conversation Topic Should I lower my fees for one-on-one Hindustani classical vocal lessons, or focus on finding the right students?

I'm a Hindustani classical vocalist and have been teaching for almost a decade. Teaching is my main source of income, so I'm trying to figure out how to price my classes fairly while also attracting more students.

I offer personalised, one-on-one sessions. I've already reduced my fees to ₹4,000 for 8 sessions as my lowest-priced option, while my other package is ₹6,400 for 8 sessions. However, some people still feel the fees are high.

I know musicians who charge ₹1,500–₹1,800 per class. Most of them have also built a strong social media presence and seem to attract students more easily. I believe the quality of what I teach is comparable, if not better in some aspects, but I haven't been very active on social media over the years. I'm only now trying to become more consistent with it.

This makes me wonder whether my pricing is part of the problem, or whether my biggest issue is simply visibility and reaching the right audience.

Since teaching is my primary source of income, I don't want to keep reducing my fees to a point where it's no longer financially sustainable. At the same time, I don't want to price myself out of the market and miss opportunities to teach genuinely interested students.

For those who teach music professionally, or have experience taking private music lessons:

- Should I reduce my fees further to attract more students, at least until I build a stronger online presence?

- Is it better to maintain my rates and focus on marketing, referrals, and reaching students who value personalised instruction?

- Have you found that a strong social media presence makes a significant difference in the fees you can charge?

- How do you strike a balance between making music education accessible and earning a sustainable living from teaching?

I'd appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who have built a career through private music teaching. I'm trying to understand what makes sense in the long run, rather than simply competing on price.

Did this song for many times this month, it did get easier the more I tried, this run though I know there are still places pitchy and couple places sounds strain or chord not fully closed (I also really don’t like how the “let” in let me go sound) but I think I’m getting a bit better than I first started

Also feel like I pushed to chest voice a bit much at the beginning

I'm a new performer and I have a singing gig coming up and I don't rlly know what to do in the tiny gaps between songs and what to say after each song, how to introduce them etc. I'm generally a little awkward and i want the talking to seem natural. Does anyone have full length videos of performers doing cafe gigs/ bar gigs etc. i just need some examples to study from

Conversation Topic How to continue doing what you love without support?

I have been singing for maybe 2 years now, I still consider myself a baby at it. I absolutely love it though, and I want to take up production classes (or at least learn it at home) and take on music theory. I only do contemporary, but would love to explore more.

The thing is, I am a college student, who is currently studying a subject I do enjoy but I love singing/creativity more. I got into college just recently and stay with my family.

However, there are payments and bills I have responsibility over. Since my family is unemployed and doesn't want to figure out how to manage, they told me to give up singing lessons in exchange for using some of my money for expenses. I do want to say everything is fine; it's just some things will be covered by me.

This made me really sensitive though, which I don't feel often. Cause I know my family and extended don't appreciate my journey, and to be honest I tend to hide what I want to do.

I am not confident enough or skilled enough to continue on my own just yet, my voice at most is decent and I still barely can unlock belting properly.

I can't find many affordable options, but not even that. My family doesn't want to hear me sing at all. So, I would have to stay away from home and find somewhere to study.

I feel so bothered and I wish I was better. Does anyone else deal with having people disapproving of singing?

Conversation Topic Embarrassed but at the same time encouraged?

I just joined a band about 2 months ago. This is my first experience ever performing (I'm 25). It's on the hobby side, nevertheless, I'm really happy about it and I help my bandmates in anything I can (I only sing at the moment). We've been rehearsing, recording some demos and I've had a lot of fun. Also listening to myself till exhaustion has made me dissect my voice and improve the ugly parts of it (way to go).

I know I'm not the best and I'm okay with it. However, I feel vulnerable that people around me are about to know I sing due to promoting stuff about it on my socials (thankfully, I do know most will not give a fuck lmao). Also, there are no artists in my family and the ones that wanted to try were looked down on. I hate that I'm about to take the heat but at this point I don't give a damn about what I could feel if it will stop me from doing something I love.

Sometimes I feel embarrassed, like when I'm doing some artwork for the band, sometimes after feeling happy on rehearsal (ironically), after having a bad day on rehearsal, etc. But looking at my bandmates interested too makes me feel encouraged. These feelings won't stop me, but, have you ever felt this way? HOW TO GET OFF THIS GUILT TRIP?
