Can’t beat her vibe-mix of creepy and sinister with weird loser. It’s like Azula trying to flirt at the beach.

451

u/albaprost Feb 21 '25

On-point description. Distinct waft of weird loser coming from Helena. On top of the whole rich heiress, corporate girlboss, straight up sinister, straight up lonely, repressed childhood trauma thing.

While Ms. Huang was supposed to be managing the floor, nonetheless!!

63

u/Nerditall Feb 21 '25

I assumed she was supervising Dylan and Gretchen in order to maintain Seth's privacy. I don't know what the hell Natalie and Drummond are at that they couldn't cover for Milchick while he was paperclip penance.

It felt a bit weird to me that there was no real consequence of Milchick having left her to manage everything (except maybe Milchick would have been on top of stuff and interrupted them, or maybe this will now be an *approbation*)

If you go frame by frame in the first scene where reintegration starts triggering at Lumon, as you switch between Lumon/Mark's house, it's so well done with iMark looking well groomed and healthy and oMark looking dishevelled and tired. They almost look like different people. The creepiest part is that the cinematography got his eyes to stay exactly in the same place in frame while the rest of him is slightly off. The left side of Helly's face is also perfectly in place so either they perfectly set them up in camera like that or there was a little bit of camera trickery to get them both to align perfectly.

562

That moment of Burt eyeing Irving at the door and offering up an affair (or a throuple) was so intense. I think Irving is playing along since his alarm bells went off about the 20 years. You may misremember dates but you don’t forget meeting another Lumon employee coming for dinner.

I was thinking the same thing. He makes his accent in the show seem so natural I forgot that's not how he talks.

Omg, you are missing out on so much. He has a very deep and amazing catalog of work going way back. Check out his appearances in the Coen Brothers movies, especially where he plays the lead role in "Barton Fink". He is so unnerving in "Five Corners" with Jody Foster. Actually, let me just post a summary of his incredible standout work in so many groundbreaking movies along the way. I've seen all of these, and they are so good:

He achieved his career breakthrough with Five Corners (1987). He acted in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing (1989), Mo' Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), and Clockers (1995). He also starred in Coens' Miller's Crossing (1990), Barton Fink (1991), for which he won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor, The Big Lebowski (1998), and O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000). He also starred in Fearless (1993), Quiz Show (1994), and Gloria Bell (2018); and portrayed Seymour Simmons in the Transformers film series (2007–2017) and Carmine Falcone in The Batman (2022).

100000%, this is going to get pitched to him and his family as an option and outtie Dylan is going to be the one who has to either decide to ā€œdieā€ to make his wife happy or live and be a fuck up

235

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '25

oDylan is being set up to be way too self absorbed to make that decision, I doubt they will pitch it to him and if something like that happens - it will be planned between Lumon, iDylan, and Gretchen, and oDylan doesn't get to be in the loop. This was pretty clearly shown in that oDylan begrudgingly agreed not to rush out and buy a new car (a major major purchase maybe once every 5 years tops for a middle class family) but was still insistent that he do a test drive when clearly the family isn't in a position to re-up their car payment/put any cash down.

Evil Burt is is a Lumon Exec

Fields must know Burt is a predator

1.5k

u/matscast Feb 21 '25

"everything that's mine, is yours" felt very much like "burt can be shared", but then he gets really defensive about them maybe having relations on the severed floor?? that whole scene is very hard to read. and why does Fields not know to shush about Burt's history? Is Burt like.. leading a double life? Fields seems very out of the loop.

479

u/hombebrew Feb 21 '25

The 'everything that's mine is yours' came across as very sarcastic and passive-aggressive to me. Like it was less of a genuine statement and more of a 'well, you just helped yourself to my husband,' from someone who doesn't want Irving there but has been told he has to have this dinner party and he has to be nice.

956

I think he doesn't care about outtie Burt since that one is going to hell. But the pure innie Burt that he wants waiting for him in Heaven...well it makes sense that he is more emotionally invested in the behavior of that one

175

u/Lemonbean Feb 21 '25

I think Fields is in an insane situation. Imagine how evil your partner has to be that you both know for sure he’s going to hell, and that the only way for you to get some semblance of him in heaven is for him to give a portion of his brain to a blank slate. Fields seems genuinely nice (but weird) but is having understandably complex feelings about his spouse seeing someone else on the severed floor. Enough to seek spiritual guidance. So I think the emotional stress got to him and he just started being a little more outspoken than he normally is—eg do you think you had sex? And him mentioning his lumon partner 20 years ago. I also couldn’t figure out if it was a romantic partner or a business partner. But I think fields is an ally

232
