Is pursuing a career as an opera singer still viable today?
Hi everyone. I’m writing this because I’ve been reflecting a lot on my future and my passion for classical singing, and I’m trying to get a realistic picture of what a career in opera looks like right now. I’m deeply drawn to the art form, the technique, and the performance aspect of opera, but as I look ahead, I want to make sure I’m making an informed decision about devoting years of intense study and resources toward this path.
From an outside perspective, it feels like the industry is going through a massive transformation. Between changing audience demographics, shifting funding models for arts organizations, and the sheer level of competition out there, I often hear conflicting opinions.
I would love to hear candidly from current opera singers, voice teachers, classical students, or anyone connected to the industry. What does the day-to-day reality of an early-career opera singer actually look like in today’s environment? How essential is a traditional conservatory degree compared to building a network and training independently? If you could go back to when you were first starting out, would you make the same choice, and what advice would you give to someone evaluating this path today?
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences, insights, or any honest advice you might have!
