Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

Asking for a “Friend” How often you guys use gtc card compared to active duty

I accidentally got my gtc card shredded while outprocessing from active army. Just curious how bad that is for me. I never used it at all even during rotations.

Career Advice What has your experience been joining the national guard while maintaining a regular civilian job?

I know they can't fire you for being in the national guard but I want to hear about career experience. I have no prior military service. I do have an engineering degree. I find the concept of the national guard interesting and the pay seems to work out to around $10,000/year for the whole part time structure once you're at the O2 level.

I suspect that with my regular full time engineering career the $10,000 in pay is offset by worse career progression. I don't know if thats actually how it works though. I work for my state government so they're likely more understanding.

Benefits Bah location

My wife is in Army NG BCT and the bah we are getting is from the zip code at fort Leonard wood where she is training. I was told by a friend that it’s supposed to be from the location of my house where we live which would mean way more money for us. Are we being shorted by the army? Is the bah where you train or where you live?

Salty Rant I’m Just Tired

My unit does Muta 6’s every month, not a big deal I knew what I signed up for. It’s just that my civilian career treats those 3 days I’m drilling as days off. So weeks when I drill on Saturday Sunday Monday, my job is having work the rest of the entire week as if I was just off for 3 days. So I essentially go 13 days in a row of “working” between drilling and my civilian job. Almost half of every month I’m working straight through.

I’m sure I’ll get used to it at some point. Just goes to show the lack of flexibility with civilian employment and working with the guard. Can’t really blame anyone but myself, I’m the one who signed up for it.

Career Advice IRR Soldiers... Thinking About Coming Back? Start With a "Try-1"!

• Upvotes

I'm throwing this out there for anyone in the IRR, whether you came from AD, NG, or a Reserve TPU, who might be feeling unsure about what's next.

A lot of IRR Soldiers I talk to tell me the same things:
• "I'm not even sure what options I have."
• "I didn't think the Army Reserve was an option for me anymoreiỊại
• "I don't want to get pulled into something I didn't sign up for."
• "I wouldn't mind coming back... I just don't know how."

So, if any of that sounds familiar, you're not the only one, and that's pretty much why I'm here.

There are Reserve options for IRR Soldiers, but everyone's situation is different. Some have reenlistment paths, some can return to a TPU, some qualify for incentives, and some just want info so they can make a decision at their own pace.
And yeah, Try-1 exist for certain IRR Soldiers. It's basically a
"no-commitment first look" at a Reserve unit. Not everyone qualifies, and it's definitely not the only option, but it's helped a lot of people figure out whether coming back feels right.

If you're IRR and just want straight answers, not pressure, about what your personal path might look like, you can DM me.
No commitment. No agenda. No sales pitch.

Just one Soldier helping other Soldiers figure out their next step if they want to.

MOS Discussion IRR to USAR/NG Question

Hi, I created a new account and I was hoping you could help: Im in the IRR now looking to come back in to the USAR or NG as either 35M or 35L, but I heard the USAR is better for both overall. Im leaning towards M at the moment. I understand there is a language suspension that expires in Jan 2027? Like right now you don't have to go through DLI to be MOSQ. What happens after the memo expires? Also, What advise do you recommend to be successful at the school house and is there anything I should do/prep beforehand.

Discussion Anyone else having pay issues with the new Army pay system?

I completed drill on 10/18, and I usually receive my LES within 7–10 days after drill. However, as of today (10/27), I still haven't received my LES.

I've heard that several soldiers in my unit are experiencing similar issues with the new Army pay system. We submitted a list of soldiers who haven't received their LES for follow-up, but I'm wondering how widespread this issue is.

For those who drilled in October:

  • Have you received your LES yet?
  • If not, is your pay also delayed, or is it just the LES that's missing?
  • Has anyone received an update from their unit's readiness NCO or DFAS?

Just trying to figure out whether this is a unit-level issue or something affecting Guard units across the country.

Discussion I feel lost? Or confused?

I (f22) ship to ft lw in april. I start rsp in two weeks. I feel completely behind with like basic military knowledge. I feel like the peers I had at meps already had some knowledge or someone that they knew who previously served. I don’t have anyone to really ask the “stupid” questions to. I know it’s something I’ll learn along the way, but does everyone feel kinda lost or newbie-ish when they first start? I don’t even know what questions to ask to help me feel prepared. Trying not to get ahead of myself and overwhelm myself.

Discussion Preparing for the ASVAB or SIFT? I built an iPhone app for extra math and spatial practice

I shared Brain Preflight on r/ArmyAviationApplicant and r/ASVAB recently. Thought it might also be useful for people joining the Guard or working toward an aviation slot.

I’m the developer. The app draws on different pilot selection and aptitude-test formats, with exercises you can practice individually in short sessions on your phone.

For example, one exercise gives you a grid of calculations and asks you to spot the incorrect ones before time runs out. There are also number sequences, working-memory exercises and spatial tasks where you mentally fold a cube net or rotate a 3D object.

Another has you track a moving target, match shapes and catch wrong sums at the same time. Each task is manageable on its own; keeping up with all three is where it gets demanding.

Heads up: some exercises get hard. The aim is to practice under pressure, so they won’t all feel like casual phone games.

This is extra practice, not a full ASVAB or SIFT course or a replica of either test. You’ll still need to study the knowledge sections, including mechanical and aviation topics where relevant. I’m not affiliated with the National Guard or the military.

5 exercise sessions a day for free, everyday. There’s an optional subscription for unlimited practice. iPhone only at the moment.

Brain Preflight on iPhone

For anyone who’s taken the ASVAB or SIFT: was the harder part knowing the material, or staying accurate with the clock running?

MOS Discussion Anyone 15 series in Michigan NG?

I’m currently active duty 11B with the 82nd and ETS in March. I’m most likely going to reclass to 15U in the Michigan National Guard, and I’m just trying to get some insight.

Discussion RSP to Active

I have been enlisted in the national guard for a few months now. I have attended two RSP drills. I am not shipping to basic for another 6 months while I finish school. I have decided that I would be more interested in going active duty. My question is how likely is it for the guard to release a soldier while they are in RSP? What steps would I need to take?

Thanks in advance.

MOS Discussion 13F in infantry unit

I am getting assigned to a FIST det, been trying to get out of staff support ever since joining the guard so I’m super excited! I just don’t really know what to expect. Most of my knowledge of infantry units comes from active duty, but obviously it’s a totally different lifestyle in the guard. Im joining a light (we all know this actually means very heavy) infantry unit, my hope is that I’ll be able to occasionally spend time integrated with a platoon doing cool maneuver stuff, while still doing observer stuff as well. I’m also hoping I’ll finally be able to go to JFO, from what I’ve heard this unit is a lot more willing to send people to career progressing schools than my previous one.

Anyone able to shed some light on the weekend warrior FISTer life?

Initial Training Prior DEP enlistment not documented on my new 09S National Guard contract — should I be concerned?

Irecently joined the Army National Guard as an 09S and am scheduled to ship to Basic Training this coming summer.

I previously enlisted in the active-duty Army but withdrew from DEP before shipping to Basic Training. I disclosed this history to my National Guard recruiter, but it appears it wasn't properly documented in my new enlistment paperwork.

My recruiter thinks it should be fine, but correcting the issue is delaying my military ID.

Could this affect my current contract, 09S status, or ship date? Is this usually just an administrative correction?

Thanks!

Discussion N400 interview through military service

Hi all,

I have my N-400 interview through military service.

Has anyone with a similar background gone through the interview recently? Did the officer ask much about the prior marriage, or was it mostly focused on military service and standard N-400 questions?

Thanks!

Career Advice Recruiter walked up to me at a McDonald's parking lot

At 19 years old I was skipping college classes that day.

An army recruiter approaches me in a McDonald's parking lot..

14 years later (initially enlisted active duty) im a physician and medical officer with NO education DEBT, have benefits the rest of my life, and a very laid back life.

All of you are thinking of joining; Just do it.

Youre not getting any younger!

Outside of combat and missing family events its a chill vocation.

Paid worldwide travel, cheap health insurance, etc.

If the army can take a college dropout and make them into a physician, anyone can be successful.

Be all you can be!

Career Advice Thinking about transferring from Army Reserve to PR National Guard aviation — looking for advice

I’m currently in the Army Reserve and I’m thinking about transferring to the Puerto Rico Army National Guard because I really want to get into Army aviation.

The MOS I actually want is 15N Avionic Mechanic, but from what I’ve been told, getting a 15-series slot through my current Reserve situation may not be realistic. Because of that, I’ve been looking at the PRARNG aviation units instead.

My idea is to first talk to a Guard recruiter and see what aviation vacancies are actually available. If there isn’t a 15N slot available right now, I was thinking about possibly taking another aviation MOS, like 15P Aviation Operations Specialist, transferring into the aviation unit, and then trying to reclass to 15N later if a vacancy opens.

I understand that being in the same 15-series field or aviation unit doesn’t guarantee I’ll eventually get 15N, and that’s the part I’m unsure about. I don’t want to transfer into 15P assuming that 15N will eventually become available and then end up stuck in an MOS that wasn’t my real goal.

The process I’m considering would basically be:

USAR → check PRARNG aviation vacancies → find a 15-series slot → request DD Form 368 conditional release → transfer to PRARNG → reclass into that aviation MOS → try to move into 15N later if a slot opens.

Before I do anything formal, I’m also planning to talk to my PSG and retention/career counselor about the idea.

For anyone familiar with Reserve-to-Guard transfers or Army aviation, I’m looking for guidance on a few things: Is taking another 15-series MOS to get into the aviation unit a reasonable strategy if 15N is the real goal? Is it easier to move between MOSs once you’re already in an aviation unit, or does that not really matter? Should I wait until an actual 15N vacancy appears instead? And is there anything I should make sure is confirmed in writing before submitting a DD 368?

I’m not trying to rush the transfer. I’m mainly trying to figure out the smartest way to pursue 15N without making a move that could leave me stuck somewhere I didn’t actually want to be.

Deployments Risk for 42A?

Hello everyone,

I’m posting on this community cause I wanted to know what is the risk for 42A’s during deployments in the Middle East theater? Like is it dangerous for them?

I wanted to ask cause my sister was told she would be going there sometime soon for a “combat deployment”

Discussion What would you suggest doing if you get out of state civilian job?

Hi folks,

I am currently in the process of changing job, but mostly getting calls from outside of state. means, i am currently working in the Army National Guard in North Carolina. I have my upcoming BCT/AIT training scheduled in 2 months,

Now what if i get a high-paid civilian job in another state? For example ohio ?

Will my army national guard continue with my planned training after knowing that i got civilian job in another state and will eventually move to another state permanently after finishing BCT/AIT training?

Or will they want me to process IST and put training on hold ?

Salty Rant Why do we spend money on these combat vehicles?

Like seriously what’s the point? The shit is millions of dollars and they maybe get drove once a month. These vehicles literally just sit idle most of the time which is not good for any vehicle.

Commanders bitch about pmcs not being done to standard but it’s not going to matter because the vehicles will still have faults from sitting idle most of the time.

It’s literally bad for a vehicle to sit parked and never driven. So is this why im getting f**ked in the ass on taxes?
