Music Ok the ultimate Miami Vice Music Encyclopedia is here!
This went way beyond what I originally was going to build.. but, I couldn’t help myself. Plus I had a blast doing it and discovered some gems I either forgot about or didn’t know were ever in any episode.
You can sort or search and toggle views between episodes, artists or fan favorites (complete with voting, that’s stored in firebase db).
I also went through and hand selected the best video available for each song, and you can listen or watch instantly inside the episode or artist cards. I tried to use the original artists YT account where possible, and also the vids with fewest ads.
I added a reporting function too that opens a form to address issues.
The heart on each song is for voting and there’s a leaderboard as well to track them forever.
Let me know what you think! And if you get any errors or funkiness, comment and I’ll investigate.
Enjoy!

IMPORTANT! MUST-READ! MUST-READ POST BEFORE WATCHING MIAMI VICE!
Hey, so one of the problems when watching Miami Vice is the order of the episodes, the biggest problem being the finale of the show placed so that there are 4, so called, "Lost Episodes" after it. I'm just going to copy paste the correct episode order from another site so that you guys have it all in one place and most importantly, the way the text was written on that site spoils some of the most important events in the show, including the end, so to avoid any and all spoilers you can use this post!
Also, there is a scene in Season 4 episode "Deliver Us From Evil" which was added by NBC later on which WASN'T ORIGINALLY PLANNED, and the scene is VERY crucial to the show and the characters of the show. With that being said, it's "recommended" that you don't even acknowledge that scene because it ruins the point of the episode.
"When Miami Vice was originally broadcast by NBC, the order in which the episodes were shown was ultimately chosen by the network. In several instances, this involved moving episodes earlier or later in the season, which in turn introduced continuity goofs that are obvious to anyone watching the show in the supposedly "correct" broadcast order. The purpose of this article is to propose an alternate "chronological" order in which to view the episodes, so that any goofs brought about by the reordering of episodes are undone."

SEASON 1

Season 1 is not affected by any obvious continuity goofs as a result of reordering.
“Dutch Oven”, an episode from S2, was filmed as a S1 episode, and there is a small goof where Tubbs still has a silver badge, and Zito’s beard disappears for one episode. It should be watched -technically- after Lombard.” - thanks to u/jaap_null for pointing this out!

SEASON 2

- "The Prodigal Son"
- "Whatever Works"
- "Out Where the Buses Don't Run"
- "Buddies"
- "Junk Love"
- "Tale of the Goat"
- "Bushido"
- "Bought and Paid For"
- "Phil the Shill"
- "One Way Ticket"
- "The Dutch Oven"
- "Back in the World"
- "Definitely Miami"
- "Yankee Dollar"
- "Little Miss Dangerous"
- "Florence Italy"
- "French Twist"
- "The Fix"
- "Payback"
- "Free Verse"
- "Trust Fund Pirates"
- "Sons and Lovers"

SEASON 3

- "El Viejo"
- "When Irish Eyes Are Crying"
- "Stone's War"
- "Walk-Alone"
- "Streetwise"
- "The Good Collar"
- "Shadow in the Dark"
- "Better Living Through Chemistry"
- "Baby Blues"
- "Killshot"
- "Forgive Us Our Debts"
- "Down for the Count (Part I))"
- "Down for the Count (Part II))"
- "Cuba Libre"
- "Duty and Honor"
- "Theresa"
- "The Afternoon Plane"
- "Lend Me an Ear"
- "Red Tape"
- "By Hooker by Crook"
- "Knock, Knock... Who's There?"
- "Viking Bikers from Hell"
- "Everybody's in Showbiz"
- "Heroes of the Revolution"

SEASON 4

As with season 1, season 4 is not affected by any obvious continuity goofs as a result of reordering.

SEASON 5

- "Hostile Takeover"
- "Redemption in Blood"
- "Heart of Night"
- "Borrasca"
- "Bad Timing"
- "Line of Fire"
- "Asian Cut"
- "Hard Knocks"
- "Fruit of the Poison Tree"
- "To Have and to Hold"
- "Miami Squeeze"
- "Jack of All Trades"
- "The Cell Within"
- "The Lost Madonna"
- "Over the Line"
- "Victims of Circumstance"
- "World of Trouble" - Lost Episode
- "Miracle Man" - Lost Episode
- "Leap of Faith" - Lost Episode
- "Too Much, Too Late" - Lost Episode
- "Freefall" - Finale
Another major continuity issue in the season concerns the placement of the "lost" episodes -- these were not originally broadcast as part of thew show's network run, but were instead shown later. This is typically reflected in lists of the show's episodes

Discussion Most Halloween-y Miami Vice episode? 🎃
Miami Vice doesn't really conjure up images of autumn, but which episodes are the most Halloween-y to you?
Off the top of my head: Little Miss Dangerous, Shadow in the Dark, Death and the Lady
Okay, there are a lot more the more I think of it, but I'll let others comment.

Speeding and chasing another car are not cool things to do.............unless of course you look like these guys, drive cars like the two cars and do it all to a glorious backdrop.

Question Season 3 episode 24 Heros of the Revolution
In this episode Gina sings in a jazz nightclub. Does anyone know if it’s her singing or someone else.

Discussion If Michael Mann tried to recreate 80s Miami Vice in the 06 film. Kyle Chandler would have been perfect for Sonny.
Maybe its because I've watched Lanterns & then went back to rewatch Friday Night Lights. However, I think he would have been one of the few actors that could have pulled off 80s Sonny. He would be my pick now for the Kosinski movie if he was in his 40s.
I think Colin Farrell fit perfectly for the 2006 version. That deal with the present and Im not sure Kyle would have been as good as Colin in that role at that time. However, that is one actor that could pull off 80s Sonny imo.

Discussion Articulating why the ending of "Definitely Miami" is so good
When I first watched the ending of "Definitely Miami," I was blown away, and I wanted to try and articulate what made it so impactful for me.
- First, the music of course. Godley & Creme's "Cry" has a sound that is just so haunting, ethereal, and nostalgic somehow. The reverb-y guitar chords and melody some how just feel and sound like the ocean to me. Or rather, they sound like a hazy memory of an ocean. They have this watery quality to them. Maybe some of it is association - the reverb-y quality of the instruments weirdly reminded me of "Dire Dire Docks" from Mario 64, which also conjures up watery imagery. But the song's lyrics are also clearly about a relationship that didn't work out, which fits so perfectly with Crockett discovering the woman he was falling in love with was just conning him the whole time and didn't actually care about him.
- Next, the emotion. There's the moment where Castillo is glaring at the federal agent, and you can tell he's smouldering underneath but all he can do is stare. And then, of course, there's Sonny. Even with him just standing there, you can tell there are hundreds of emotions firing in his head. He's got this brooding, distant stare while Callie is still trying to con him, and he's kind of just ignoring her. Then the police show up, and he just puts the shades on, as though trying to mask his emotions or swallow them, like he's trying to remain stoic despite feeling heartbroken. And when he turns around and starts strutting to the beat of the song, it's just perfection. He's walking away from this situation, brooding on it, while walking in a way that's kind of reminiscent of an 80's power strut. It's the contrast between the melancholy of the situation, and the cool and collected nature of Sonny.
- Finally, the visuals. All of the emotion of the scene, the bittersweet feelings, the melancholy, the anger, etc., are combined with the most idyllic beach scenes. Also some of the shots are so artfully composed, they're like a painting. So you've got the most colorful turquoise waters, blue skies, tan beaches, and crisp white linen seem so cheerful and bright and beautiful, but it's displayed amidst all this tragedy of death, heartbreak, disappointment, anger, loss, etc. The combination of the bright, sunny exteriors and the brooding emotions is such a perfect encapsulation of that "pastel noire" vibe of Miami Vice.
The ending just perfectly captures the feeling of the show - this nostalgic, bittersweet, colorful, bright, brooding, tropical pastel landscape. It is definitely Miami Vice.

Curious what others think, if they agree, or if the episode/ending scene had an impact on them for different reasons

Wonderful scene, awesome music by Godley and Creme (ex 10cc) Crockett kills psychopath Charlie Basset at a desert quarry. The scene fades to a beach where Crockett meets Callie. Revealing he is a cop, he arrests her. Callie immediately begins flirting with her arresting officer, leaving Crockett staring at the ocean

Whenever I Think of Tubbs...
It's always this scene where he finds the crooked cops that set up Angelina and got his son kidnapped. I'm praying MBJ can just bring half of this kind of intensity to the big screen.

Music Now this how a synthwave cover of Jan Hammer should sound
Lots of people have covered Crockett's Theme but rare other tracks...I thought this was EXCELLENT
r/MiamiVice • u/fred_derf_ • 4d ago
Question Would you still pay the ticket if Jan Hammer is not involved in Miami Vice '85
They could use old tracks, or ask him for new compositions, even if he is older now. I think that project would be pointless if Jan is not involved, like Brad Fiedel 's absense in Terminator lame sequels or Faltermeyer for Beverly Hills Cop 3, Jan's score is too important.

Tubbs' Nationality?
Someone who's clearly not a fan of the show mistakenly said he didn't like the casting of MBJ for Tubbs because "Tubbs is 1/2 Latino". Literally made my BP rise, at work today. So I had to look it up, just know know I wasn't tripping back during the 80s.
No, Detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs from Miami Vice is not Latino; he is an African-American character, and his actor, Philip Michael Thomas, is African-American (with German, Irish, and Native American ancestry). [1, 2, 3]
- The Character: Ricardo Tubbs was born in Queens, New York, to African-American parents (George and Lilly Tubbs). He explicitly identifies as a black cop in the series.
