Help Identifying a Stela

Post image
18 Upvotes

Hi there, Virginia E. Miller's paper "The Dwarf in Classic Maya Art" features this rubbing of a stela. The article claims it is Stela 1 from Caracol; however, it doesn't seem to match any image I can find of it. It looks similar to Panel 10 from Dos Pilas, which originally came from Arroyo de Piedra.

Any idea?

Help I identifying this Maya vase

Post image

This vase is featured in The Maya Book of the Dead. The image note claims it is from the Dumbarton Oaks Collection. I emailed them and they said it wasn't in their collection. I can't locate it on Justin Kerr's Vase Database.

It seems be depicting the Moon Goddess and lunar rabbit humiliating God L by stealing his garb following his defeat by the Hero Twins.

Algunos glifos

Mayan glyph on ceramic vessel

I saw what I think is a Chocholá style vessel in Amsterdam last week. I was wondering if the first incision is actually a glyph or not. I read the first "glyph" as Ajaw but maybe that's just wishfully thinking on my part. I'm a beginner at reading maya so correct me if I'm wrong

Can someone help identify this artwork?

This is a stone rubbing featured in the book Maya Sculpture and it claims it is Stela 16 from Dos Pilas. However, images online do not seem to match up. Any clue?

The 132 languages are the long-term scope of the platform. I never said I’m fluent in all 132 or that 132 complete courses are already finished. I know—wild concept—a roadmap and a finished product ain’t the same thing. I’m not letting AI freestyle Nahuatl, Maya, or any other language and then present it like fact. AI helps organize the material, but the actual content comes from dictionaries, grammar books, recorded speech, academic research, historical documents, and existing community resources. And just so we’re clear, I know the difference between attested and contested sources. Attested means the material is actually documented. Contested means there’s disagreement over the spelling, meaning, origin, usage, or interpretation. Contested information would be labeled clearly, with the different versions included—not presented like everybody agrees.

The courses are being built and released in stages. Hopefully, native speakers, teachers, and knowledgeable community members will help review the material and contribute authentic audio. Where native audio isn’t available yet, I’ll use a pronunciation system I created called Easy-Read Audio Mimicry. It breaks the pronunciation down into regular, easy-to-read sounds so anybody can look at it and nail the pronunciation without having to understand IPA or complicated linguistic symbols. Yeah, I think I accidentally created my own method. Lol.

I’m not claiming perfection on day one. I’m building something that can grow, be corrected, and improve over time. So are you here to help build, point out actual mistakes, and contribute something useful—or are you just here to tear it down before you’ve even seen the work?

Is my characters name accurate? If not, can I get some advice?

Hello hello! I made this account to ask this question.

I am writing a web comic about a male maya vampire and am trying to learn about the culture but i do need some pointers. Here are my questions.

Here’s some things about him to help, he’s a commoner, he never married, his father passed away so he is the man of the house, and he was turned in Spain by a vampire from America.

He’s 24, born 6/24/1503. Is the name “Ah Chuen” accurate?

The name also doesn’t seem like him. What other names/sites are good?

Are the “zodiacs” accurate? Would commoners be
named after their zodiac?

Is there a good map/guides on cities? I thought the Yucatán would be cool but I’m so lost :(

Did the parents ever change their kids names later?

How old were the kids when they were named?

Last question, would it be far fetched for this vampire to rename him after making him? I’m not sure what name would make sense, something about bringing death or relating to blood.

Sorry if this is cheesy or dumb, but this is my passion and i want it to be as accurate as possible. Thank you for reading and i hope to hear some thoughts!

Is Izapa the clearest example of the intersection of Olmec influence in Mayan lands, or is Izapa Mixe-Zoque and not even Mayan?

I found this at a Goodwill today and I washed it when I got home, but I accidentally washed off some of the paint. I only used water and a bit of soap. Does anyone know what kind of paint I should use? It feels like stone, but I’m not sure. You can see how much brighter is was in the store. Is the paint even needed? I feel like the dates are much easier to see but I stopped cleaning it when I realized the paint was falling off.

Conjunctions in Classical Mayan?

I've read that sometimes conjunctions like "and" are omitted but understood to be in the meaning of texts. But what about "but" or "however"? I can't imagine they're just implied but I've never seen them attested. Maybe it's just not something you see in monumental texts?
