I dunno if I can handle the stress of old man Volk y'all

Seriously, my heart was pounding in the later rounds. But now I'm happy as shit.

u/Psibadger Apr 13 '25
Haha! Same. Round 5 my heart was thumping so hard against my chest. I was counting down the minutes. Damn, I'm not sure I can do that again - unless it is a fight against someone like Evloev. There's too many fighters with good or hard hands in the FW division, and Volk always, always looks vulnerable when he's hit hard.

u/Apprehensive-Pin-144 Apr 13 '25
idk about you guys but the years spent supporting bobby knuckles has hardened me for times like this.

u/k1ng57 Apr 13 '25
They are the only fighters I feel sick from nerves watching lol. Both almost always fighting to decision and feeling like they are one wrong step away from getting finished.

yeah as a whittaker fan my heart is out of my chest every fight. this 100% felt like the average whittaker fight for me, not good for my health when my favourite fighters go against these power punchers or super aggressive submission wrestlers. thought I didn't have to worry about it for max but then ilia slept him lmao

u/robedpillow3761 Apr 13 '25
Every single time they would trade or have an extended exchange I’d hold my breath. I was genuinely worried the entire 25 minutes

His damage resistance is clearly a shadow of its former self. And it affects how he reacts to punches and his decision making.
People forget that once upon a time he was the pressure fighter eating shots from Chad Mendes and brutalising him.
Age will do that to anyone. I love Ilia’s fighting ability but if he sticks around long enough and eats enough shots one day people will also forget he once ate 7000 punches from Holloway and Volk to KO both of them and think he’s a chinny guy

Flat Earther taps out

Chandler washed

Volk on top again.

It's kinda crazy how beloved Volk is i remember the toxicity after the Max fights.
524
u/Dispicable12 Apr 13 '25
i was a hater strictly because I'm such a fan of Max, but its really difficult to hate Volk when you hear him talk.

They need to get someone like Patchy Mix for it to be a good indicator of elite talent. Most of the fighters are all washed by the time they get to the UFC.
Edit: This didn’t age well

I think he's a bit too small for the LWs. Stay at FW, get some more experience.
2
u/jscummy Apr 13 '25
Doesn't seem like he has any problems with the cut, moving up into the sharks tank doesn't make much sense
1
u/OtakuMecha Apr 13 '25
Yeah especially since he’s likely one good win away from another title shot.

Congrats Champ on beating Diego “Wake Me Up Inside” Lopes

u/suzukigun4life Apr 13 '25
Diego just wasn't aggressive enough early on. His time will come but man, wish he went for it earlier.
514
Apr 13 '25
He was aggressive. He would just not move his head, so every time he engaged with Volk, he would eat a shot. That's a pretty big incentive to just kinda....hang out right outside of striking range all night.

You can clearly tell his damage resistance is not near what it once was and his reactions to shots reflected that.
On a technical tactical level he looks as good as ever. Physically he’s still so fucking strong and fast it’s unbelievable

Diego “Mark Hunt” Lopes has a fucking TITANIUM CHIN on him, this dude ate all of Volk’s bombs and just kept coming forwards. GREAT fight but Volk just showed levels. MY GOAT IS BACK 🐐 🐐 🐐
372
u/nguyenjitsu Apr 13 '25
Diego just ate every fucking jab dude needed to do more
95
u/Dry_Beach_705 Apr 13 '25
Lopes fought like someone who has worried about gassing
43
1
u/PattMcGroyn Apr 16 '25
Maybe - I think it was Volk's footwork and feinting game that had Lopes looking confused and adrift. Lopes simply didn't have the technical skill or knowledge to deal with a guy constantly turning him like that.
149
u/jfsoaig345 Apr 13 '25
Ate the same overhands that had Max and KZ on wobbly legs too. Something about these Latinos and their durability man
36
u/Pederakis Apr 13 '25
I would argue that his overhands looked way harder tonight. He was trying to take his head off!
23
u/WaxRobots Apr 13 '25
bro those overhands were crazy and diego just ate em.
nothing hit super flush but still you think it would put him on the back foot.
volk was too quick and technical.
2

when you start to slow down in speed you make up for it with power. Aldo did the same thing

When Diego rocked Volk with the uppercut and charged at him, Volk was straight up just hitting him full force and Diego kept going forward lmao.
41
Apr 13 '25
He has a chin but he definitely felt those shots. He was gun shy because of it.
6
Apr 13 '25
I don't think he was gun shy because of Volk's shots. He just couldn't find the right distance and angles to punch because of Volk's footwork.
14
u/Ahhmyleggg Apr 13 '25
He has been knocked out before early in his career
48
u/Sladds Apr 13 '25
And Mark Hunt got knocked out by Melvin Manhoef, a middleweight, still got a chin on him.

Diego has a perk that's like "when receiving damage greater than 10% of current health immediately land critical hit on opponent"
15

Good think Volk didn’t knock him out Cold, Diego activated Martyrdom Pro before the fight and those grenades could’ve got him

Reyes W, Jean Silva yet another dominant win, cheating Mike L, and now Uncle Volk getting the title back...fair to say that the main card delivered

u/RafiakaMacakaDirk Apr 13 '25
just how good is topuria god damn
174
u/pyroblastftw Apr 13 '25
I think he's the one boxer who really managed to capitalize on Volk's occasionally bad habit of leaning back.
Diego should have taken more risks and tried to create a similar situation.
74
u/kangs Apr 13 '25
I wanted Volk to win and I’m happy, but I couldn’t believe how many times Lopes just let him walk out when backed up against the cage

As an Aldo fan as well, I say Volk has now overtaken his spot. Either way both GOATs.

This is similiar to Aldo retaking the belt after conor moved up. Honestly Volk needs to defend during his second reign for him to pass up Aldo, especially since he's still down on total defenses.
14
u/TerminatorReborn Apr 13 '25
Aldo is one of my favorites but after tonight here is no question

dunno how anyone thought lopes had anything there. volk had more td’s, kd’s, and sig strikes across the entire fight. was pretty dominant and convincing

Even the big moment where volk couldn't see and lopes was chasing him down had volk landing the big counters
