Hi everyone,
I'm trying to figure out whether LeanFIRE could be a realistic goal for me, and I'd appreciate feedback from people with experience in FIRE planning, particularly those who have considered retiring in a country with a relatively low cost of living.
Here is my current situation:
I'm 28 years old. Single, dunno if I ever have a long-term relationship but let's assume that I'm single forever now :D
- Monthly income: Around $4,000
- Monthly expenses: No more than $1,500
- Real estate: A property fully-paid (Thank god it was really hard) worth approximately $100,000, generating around $600 per month in rental income
- Index funds: Around $10,000
- Healthcare: I currently pay roughly $40 per month for healthcare contributions and have access to public healthcare.
- Lifestyle: I have very little tendency to increase my spending as my income grows.
Based on my calculations, I believe I could reach my financial goals within approximately 10 years if I maintain a similar savings rate.
What makes my situation interesting is the combination of relatively low living costs, affordable access to healthcare, rental income, and the ability to save a substantial portion of my income. At the same time, I'm aware of the risks associated with inflation, currency depreciation, economic uncertainty, and potential changes in taxes or healthcare policies.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few questions:
Portfolio allocation: Since I already own a rental property, would it make sense to focus primarily on building a diversified index fund portfolio rather than accumulating more real estate?
Withdrawal strategy: How would you approach a sustainable withdrawal rate when your living expenses are in local currency but much of your investment portfolio may be denominated in foreign currencies.
Healthcare: How much of an advantage is affordable public healthcare when planning for early retirement, and what contingencies should I account for?
Country and currency risk: How would you factor inflation, currency depreciation, and potential policy changes into a long-term FIRE plan?
My 10-year timeline: What assumptions would you challenge in my calculations? Am I overlooking any major risks?
I'm particularly interested in hearing from people who have pursued FIRE outside the US or Western Europe, or who have experience managing investments and expenses across different currencies.
I'm not looking for advice on a specific investment product. I'd like to understand whether my overall approach is realistic and what I should be thinking about before committing to a 10-year plan.
Thanks in advance!
