Discussion Reddit is too strict for new users

I’ve run into a frustrating problem while trying to participate in Reddit communities. Some subreddits restrict posting for accounts that don’t have enough karma, which makes it difficult to get involved in discussions when you’re just starting out.

The confusing part is that these requirements vary between communities, so it’s not always clear where a new user can participate freely. You might find a community where you want to contribute, only to discover that your account doesn’t meet its posting requirements.

I understand why moderators use these restrictions to reduce spam, but I wonder whether there are better ways to distinguish genuine newcomers from spam accounts without relying so heavily on karma thresholds.

It’s an interesting trade-off between protecting communities and making Reddit accessible to new members.

Other just here trying to understand it

I've been using Reddit mostly to look for book recommendations and find the titles of those trendy AI short dramas that are usually locked behind a paywall. 😂

Honestly, Reddit feels like Google, but better in a way because you get answers and recommendations directly from people who've actually tried or watched things. I love how I can search for something, add "Reddit" to the search, and suddenly find exactly what I'm looking for!

But now that I'm finally getting the hang of Reddit, I've discovered another challenge: karma points. Hahaha! My post got deleted because I didn't have enough karma, even though my account isn't new. 😭

So, let's talk! What do you love most about Reddit? What makes you keep coming back, and what are some of the coolest or most useful things you've discovered here? I'd love to hear your stories and explore more of what this platform has to offer! 😂

Rant It’s really annoying how hard Reddit makes it for new users to participate in Reddit.

I deleted my account years ago and finally decided to make a new one. But for new accounts it’s so difficult to post or comment anywhere without it getting taken down or taking forever in between interactions. It’s such a strange catch 22: to post you need karma but you need karma to post. I was really looking forward to getting into some interesting discussions in my niche hobby communities but I can hardly participate. Just needed to vent

Discussion things i learned in reddit as newbie

1.some communities strict to ai or admin of reddit.

if you try to post using ai generated pictures or words. other members will report you or make you detected by the reddit admin and if that happens you will be automatically banned or shadowbanned

2.what is shadow banned.

shadow banned is when you can still see their posts but when you post automatically other members or anyone else won't see them. you will notice it immediately if you post but no one has commented or upvoted. right now i don't know how to get rid of it.

3.don't use ai to post.

like i said, it's very risky to use ai for posting or comments. because you will often be permanently banned

4.struggles as a newbie on reddit

it's very hard when you're new to reddit, no karma or contribution is very limited to post in different communities because of karma requirements

Rant Trying to Connect with low Karma

This is just a rant about the fact that reddit puts way too much emphasis on Karma, especially when it is only given out for each upvote you get so no matter how active you try to be, if people don't upvote (not that I am asking for that because I am NOT!) then you get flagged as being not an active enough account. There are multiple subreddits that I would like to get my involved with, but trying to avoid getting banned/flagged as a spambot all based on this arbitrary system, almost makes being on reddit not worth it.

That's all I have. Thanks for coming to my Tedtalk.

Rant Im new here, so whats the deal with reddit?

I created reddit for the sole purpose of making friends. Everyone thread ive visited has allowed me to post, but theres a catch. It allows me to create a post and after putting my blood sweat and tears into a the post body, i hit post. Then, all of my hard work was futile because i cant post because im either too new or just dont have karma. I check the guidelines and it doesnt say anything about post requirements. I understand that its for bots but ive seen bots post on those same threads. So whats the deal when bots can post but bot a genuine person??? Its really frustrating how sensitive this platform can be. I can understand the point of a “point system” but when bots can have them and be able to post it loses its credibility for users like me that just want to post for the sake of making friends or whatever else. Anyways i wanted to say more but my keyboard keeps making typos and i have to correct them and it makes me lose track. Have a good day/night

Rant Hey there! 38 male nurse here! Crazy how things are anymore.

I go to post on Reddit but still not able to. It’s interesting how a thought can be not allowed due to not having enough followers or people behind you to begin with. I have always loved Reddit for the genuine authenticity of it all. I want to thank you all for being a part of that! If any of you would like a discussion about pulm/crit care or case management I am available! I also love looking for cool rocks and nerding about space/time!

Question Is Karma a 1 to 1 ratio of upvote to Karma?

I am new to reddit and am trying to gain more karma to be able to post in subreddits that I am more interested in, but I’ve noticed that even when I’m trying to contribute to other communities, the amount of upvotes I get do not correlate with my karma. Most of my posts get like 3-4 upvotes, but I’m wondering whether you only get karma if a single post gets a lot of upvotes vs if you get more karma from the cumulative upvotes you receive.

Rant Let's discuss why Reddit has so many different types of people

Id like to actually be able to use this app without finding ways to be active for weeks and weeks lol, so let's all have a super duper ultra productive conversation about this very deep question.

Rant I wonder why Reddit has changed so much?

Like is it AI? Or too many spammers. I used to use Reddit in like 2023 maybe and man it was good. I regret deleting my account but here I am again 🥲 something about Reddit makes it kind of addicting. Maybe because most of us are anonymous lol I feel like I already typed 100 letters but it still saying I can’t post oh okay now I can post it 🤗

Rant Everything I post gets banned so here’s a Hail Mary for karma

Well first off I don’t want to use any trigger words that’ll flag me but.

I downloaded Reddit. Eager to use it. Be active in subreddits. Answer questions and get questions answered.

Why does everything I do get taken down

Anyways here is my opinion on dogs vs cats in attempts to do a good service

Cats are so awesome and self trained and so cute but they shed and I feel like you can’t play with them as good as dogs. I also love dogs that don’t shed but not the huge dogs. I’d also say girl dogs are way better than guy dogs.

Not sure which pet I’ll decide to get in the future

Rant I want to be able to use Reddit man

The amount of frustration I have for this newly found obsession of these little smiski characters is insane. I can only buy so many so I know want to participate in subreddits about smiskis. Talking to people offering my advice. And also asking advice in where to buy smiskis. Everything I post gets banned. Automods. Karma. Account age. I love Reddit and feel like it’s super useful but it is so hard for brand new accounts man. Like this is my first time using Reddit and I want to be able to actually use it. I don’t want to be LIMITED when I am in my newly found addiction. I understand the redistributions vi the platform and spam but dang man I want to talk about smiskis with people

I JUST WANT TO USE THE APP

Question Kind of a question & rant

Okay, genuine question because maybe I’m missing something…
How tf are you supposed to get karma when every subreddit requires karma just to post? 😭
I’m trying to ask a few questions that I actually need help with, but every subreddit I find is like:
“Sorry, you need 500 karma to post.”
Okay… cool. How am I supposed to GET the 500 karma if I CAN’T POST? 😂
I understand wanting to stop bots, spam, and trolls. I really do. But some of these requirements are crazy. I’m not trying to become a full-time Reddit commenter just to unlock the ability to ask one question.
I’ve been looking for subreddits with lower karma requirements, but then I run into another problem: the ones that let me post usually aren’t relevant to what I actually need help with.
So now I’m just sitting here like 🤨
Is there actually a legitimate way around this, or is the Reddit initiation process really just:
Make an account
Get rejected from every subreddit
Comment on 47 random posts
Somehow acquire enough internet points
Finally earn the privilege of asking your question 😂
Any legit advice would be appreciated.
