Ulysses "U.P." in Ulysses

Ulysses is interested in the ways some people fail to make sense of the world. Some of them, despite enormous and all consuming effort. Or because of that effort.

Alf Bergen drives Dennis Breen insane by sending him a postcard reading exclusively "U.P."

Breen spends the entire day building or trying to build a paranoid fantasy about the world from those two letters. We should follow his lead. Why "U.P."?

The "thieves cant" is a recurring motif in Ulysses, and I think it's about this: Joyce's "epiphanies" are like that postcard. You gotta work for it and OSHA really oughtta take a look around in there at some point.

I got two copies of James Joyce Ulysses. One was gifted to me. Which is better? Ann Arbor media group 2005 edition or modern library 1992 edition? Any thoughts? Thanks

Ulysses Which version of Ulysses is the better annotated edition of these two?

I was going to buy the Penguin one but was put off by the fact that all the annotations were at the back of the book and were not numbered in the text, so I thought I may as well look up the references and what people have said about them myself online. Then I was going to buy the Cambridge one but was put off by it costing over a hundred quid. I might be willing to fork out this if the annotations are in footnotes, also the editor and compiler of this one had a good but short-lived podcast about the book. If there's amother annotated edition you'd recommed please don't keep it to yourself. Go raibh míle maith agat

Ulysses Does Wandering Rocks actually have anything to do with the Odyssey

I know Joyce didn't come up with the episode titles but E10 seems to be the odd one out in (A) having no clear Homeric parallel (he lists "places, objects, forces" in the Linati schema) and (B) being named after something which is never actually depicted in the Odyssey. Is there any significance to the "wandering rocks" label being attached to this chapter?

Ulysses Struggling with the book

I have to read 'Ulysses' for my college class and I'm really struggling. I'm a liberal arts major and I just really hate the book so far. I try to keep an open mind but I'm realizing my semester-long class is not long enough to get a good grasp on this book. My professor is glazing the book, saying it's the best European novel ever, and I'm starting to resent him. I want to try and reframe my reading of it. Is there anyone who started off not liking it and changed their mind further into the book? This is my final year of my degree and I have to write my dissertation and reading the book feels like a waste of time and tuition money. I can't drop the class.

Finnegans Wake Inspired by “Anna Livia Plurabelle” from Finnegan’s Wake by James Joyce

Apologies if this is not suitable to share here but as a lifelong Joyce fan, and given that he himself explored the possibility of making a cinematic version of this particular scene (Stuart Gilbert adapted it into a screenplay with Joyce’s input), not to mention his love of intertextuality, I think Joyce might have explored the possibilities and potential of generative media if he somehow found himself in our times. Feel free to disagree!

PS: Penguin really needs to up its game when it comes to premium hardbacks.

No dust jacket.

Slight see through.

Decent font size.

300 some pages of notes.

Not yet released in my country. Had to get it imported.

Ulysses Am I ready for Ulysses?

So far I’ve read(in order)
Dubliners
The Iliad
Portrait of the artist
The Odyssey
Hamlet

I really loved Joyce’s prose, however I’m a little intimidated by the reputation of Ulysses, the copy I have is not annotated, do I have anything to worry about?

Also a fun aside, I started reading the Leopard by Lampedusa, as I was debating whether to start Ulysses yet or not, and okk the preface it’s mentioned that Lampedusa lamented not being able to “make Ulysses”(in reference to the structure of the leopard iirc)

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man The best edition of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

Hello! I’m writing my final paper at university working with A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I’m working mostly with a Portuguese edition but I have an English edition borrowed from my professor. As I am considering trying the masters process, I believe that is time for me to finally buy an English edition. I was looking for options and honestly the one that made me consider buying was the Norton one, but I would love suggestions.
I have access to some editions online, so I’m looking for a physical copy.
I would appreciate a lot if someone could help with this.

I’m trying to buy at Amazon since it can deliver across continents, but feel free to send any recommendations you find useful.
Thanks ins advance!

Finnegans Wake After spending three years I finally finished Finnegans Wake, it's high art

...high art like Tugg Speedman doing Simple Jack.

I don't know why I did this to myself, truly. I don't know if I hate myself or James Joyce more. I hope we both go to hell, and I'm not even religious.

Someone help me cope and justify this horrible waste of time in the comments please. I'm lost

Ulysses Penelope : Who is returning to whom?

Penelope : Who is returning to whom?

The standard narrative of Ulysses has Bloom finally return home to Molly. He returns to Ithaca having reunited with Stephen, slayed the suitors and reclaimed his domain. The hero’s journey as it is often called mirrors the Odyssey’s Telemachia(d), Odyssey and Nostos. The titles Joyce uses in the various schemas for each episode suggest an equivalence to this approach.

As with most things Joyce, all is not what it appears at first glance. Upon closer inspection there are two Odyssean figures each on their own journey of return, Bloom a physical return and Molly a devotional one. So who is the real Odysseus?

I would suggest both.

Let’s investigate the evidence. Bloom is on a peripatetic journey around Dublin on June 16th 1904. Throughout his voyage he has to overcome the various opponents determined to halt his progress. Despite their best efforts Bloom vanquishes each in turn from Calypso through to Circe.

However, despite his variety of locations and confrontations his mind is focussed on only one thing, Molly. Indeed, he unsuccessfully spends all of episode 5 “Lotus Eaters” trying not to think of her. Yet throughout the day the reader is reminded of Bloom’s devotion to his wife from thoughts of happier times, cosmetic lotions to book and lingerie purchases. The bar of Lemon’s soap is an analogy of her ever presence.

Bloom is the one who bends but does break to temptation. In fact he fights off his own suitors from the maid next door, Martha, Gerty McDowell, Zoey and ultimately Bella Cowen. His methods of remaining loyal to Molly may be unorthodox and skate the margins of propriety but nevertheless he does remain devoted in mind at least to his wife.

Molly on the other hand remains at 7 Eccles Steet. Whilst physically in one place her mind is wandering all day. She is physically and emotionally unfaithful to her husband and we are only introduced to her thoughts of the day in the final episode, “Penelope”.

Molly’s devotion to Bloom is facing its own challenges. The death of Rudy and the subsequent schism in the marriage and lack of intimacy has Molly at odds with her own desires. For a large portion of the book Molly is with Boylan. She is enjoying the physical intimacy and validation that Boylan provides but yearns ultimately to be somewhere else emotionally.

The parallels with Odysseus stranded on Ogygia with the nymph Calypso are evident to the eagle-eyed reader. Odysseus spent 7 out of the 10 years trapped in what, one could argue, was not an entirely adversarial situation. Homer’s protagonist yearns for home and Penelope despite the sexual attentions of the beautiful Calypso. Odysseus is yearning to be somewhere else physically.

Molly’s named suitors are, I would contend, those characters to whom Molly was the object of their desire, not potential other infidelities of hers. We are constantly reminded of Molly’s sexual allure either by reference to her physical attributes or to the intangible essence she appears to exude. She could clearly have her pick if she so desired with John Henry Menton being the most obvious example of a spurned paramour.

In the end, after many mental deliberations on Bloom, his physical attributes, his idiosyncrasies and how he treats his fellow humans and animals. Molly emotionally returns to Bloom with the famous “yes I said yes I will Yes” conclusion to the book. This is Molly’s Odyssean return having faced her own unique hero’s journey.

Ulysses the novel is subjective and open to many interpretations. These are just my personal observations as I have read and reread Ulysses over the years. This resource is designed purely to help the reader understand some of the subplots that may go unnoticed.
