News AST, Russian publisher of Hibike! Euphonium, dropped the series (along with 20+ others) due to poor sales. We got two volumes out of them (which is still one more that what Yen Press did lol)

Information Practice. Off season.

Did they practice 9-5:30 after the competition in November, earlier if they didn’t make it to nationals? I know the seniors left after to prepare for admissions to college. What was the schedule until March?

Discussion Cool things I learned after reading the novels Spoiler

• The first year storyline has almost as much Rikka content as Kitauji, so at one point Rikka was as popular or even more popular than Kitauji, with the first year ending in their joint performance in the amusement park.

• There's an interesting explanation about how Kitauji were able to get to the Kansai stage during Kumiko's first year, passing one of the Big Three schools, leading into a tiny Easter egg-like storyline that lasted through all three years. After that, them getting bronze during the first-year Nationals seemed natural and was pretty much spoiled during their participation in the railway station performance.

• Asuka's last performance was not during the Nationals, but in the March of the next year during the "Coming of the Spring" performance with Rikka, even through she didn't play the euphonium, but performed as a drum major.

• Overall story of Minami turned out to look a bit differently after Natsuki's spin-off came out. During Kumiko's first year storyline we didn't have enough information about Minami kids, as we simply spectated through Kumiko's eyes, so it seemed like Nozomi was in the wrong, but still, everything was too complicated. The second year gave a bigger hint, with Nozomi seemingly wanting to go to the music school, but then she mentioned multiple times that she was uncertain, and as the story progressed through Kumiko's perspective, we saw that most of the characters seemed to take Mizore's side, and Nozomi just blamed herself too much. The spin-off makes it clear that when Nozomi had quit the wind band during their first year, she went to the community orchestra where she could improve her skills, and Yuuko supported her not telling Mizore anything, as Mizore would've definitely quit with her, but during their second year she suddenly swapped sides and became very aggressive towards Nozomi. After this, the second year events kind of follow the pattern, with Mizore suffering because of her being used to having Nozomi as her social shield. Natsuki's point of view in this story seems the most objective, and during her dialogue with Mizore on the Ferris wheel after they already got into their universities, Mizore mentioned that she could be close to Nozomi in more ways than just studying in the same place, such as having common hobbies or friends. Natsuki felt betrayed as she understood that even though she thought that she became closer to Mizore, she was probably seen only as a way to be near Nozomi, although with Mizore it's impossible to judge anything confidently.

• The third year was not Kumiko's story, but Mayu's. Even though not everything was perfect, in the end things turned out exactly how Mayu wanted them to be with her giving up the solo to Kumiko, maintaining her friendship with the ensemble members and gaining admiration from Kanade.

• Kitauji's last performance with Kumiko and the others was during their Okinawa trip, which is a very heartwarming story that serves as the ending of the whole storyline.

Discussion Kumiko’s apartment

I have only seen the series and movies available in U.S. I have not read the books. I am trying to figure out the floor plan for the apartment? Is it 2LDK or 3LDK? Did the sister’s share a room. Big age gap for that.

Question Favorite competition piece in the anime?

Hello! I may be biased since I was not a band kid but youth orchestra (first violins, not clarinets to the left of the conductor!).

I wasn’t a fan of the crescent moon dances at all. There are times where I listen to the whole thing and go it’s alright.

I particularly liked Liz and the bluebird. Funnily enough Apple Music gives the OST its German name of: “Liz und ein Blauer Vogel” instead of Spotify’s Japanese name. But the third and fourth movement of Liz were really good! Could have been an excerpt from an oboe concerto. And there was ofc the excellent narrative of mizore and nozomi.

Hitotose no uta is also good but the interpretation changed noticeably in the movie version from the anime. It’s more spacious and grand (smth like Bruckner) in the movie as opposed to the romantic pacing of the anime performance. The marimba is also more prominent in the “soli” in the movie version. Both are good but I prefer the anime performance.

Let me know what piece you liked and why. And which interpretation of Hitotose you preferred. Thanks!

Question Is the anime not very popular?

For me it's one of my most favorite shows and it's dear to my heart, but seeing how the movie still hasn't been subbed makes me wonder if it's just kind of unpopular?

Probably one of my favorite ways to log hours on my horns. Not exactly pretty but way cooler than duet books.

If I find the time I might make a track with complete instrumentation.

Piccolo, Flute 1 and 2, Oboe (on flute), Trumpet 1 (and a bit of 2), Horn 1-4 (on euphonium), Trombone 1 - Bass (on bass trombone), Euphonium, Tuba

Discussion Kensuke Ushio Ost Duality

After finishing watching Chainsaw Man movie a few months ago, I really like both his ost "in the pool" and "in the sea". Where it shows duality of joining and parting.

Today, I revisit the Liz and the Blue Bird ost, where it shows more complex behavior between the two main protagonist, Mizore and Nozomi, their role, their "blue bird" representative.

And somehow, I just noticed the intro and outro has same aesthetic approach as chainsaw man movie. The "wind, glass, bluebird" and "wind, glass, girls" shows their motive, their ever changing perspective, their hope. At first, treating another like the "bluebird" and keep them anchored, captive, hoping their relation stay still. Become treating another as another human being, "girls". Letting each other to grow, find their own path.

May I know his other works where he use similar pattern?

Discussion (Just a personal reflection) One of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.

I'm not that good at reviews and such but I just wanted to share a few of my thoughts.

I’m a bit of a sucker for anime involving music. Your Lie in April has been one of my all-time favourites since high school. Specifically 2021. Anyways wrong anime.

It’s been about 4 years since I’ve graduated from high school. Back then, I was heavily involved with my high school’s music department. I was involved in a Mass Band with the piano and played flute in a concert band. So I was all over music during my high school days. Since then, I’ve moved into uni chasing a degree unrelated to music, but I still manage to teach piano on the side. However, over the course of this year I finally gave Hibike! Euphonium a shot. I remember seeing the anime on MAL back in 2021. I remember joking about it with a mate of mine in concert band who played euphonium going, "HEY LOOK IT'S YOU!" I'd get to it... eventually. Man, it did not disappoint.

I know many people have summed up the series in detail, so I won’t bore you again with another rehash. I will say, this is one of the most human and mundane stories I’ve ever seen, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, it’s what makes this anime brilliant. Kumiko has to be easily one of the most well-written characters in fiction, not because she knows something and sticks to a belief, but because she makes mistakes, learns, and slowly changes into the character that she is by the end of a series. But the biggest takeaway is her determination and humility even when things don’t go her way. It's not just Kumiko, either. Both the main and supporting characters have their own depth, motivations and reasons for acting the way they do, which adds so much flavour to the story. On top of that, what a reminder for me that a dedication to the arts can be painful: perfecting a passage or phrase and then performing when it matters under scrutiny. Sometimes, you tend to look at things with rose-tinted glasses and remember it was all sunshine and rainbows. This anime honestly nails the reality part. Also some of the thoughts and concerns that all the characters had felt very real and felt very teenage in a way. It's also surreal to hear those while you've passed that mark of graduation and moved on with your life.

The biggest takeaway for me was the atmosphere. I'm sure a few people in this thread have been involved in high school bands. For me, it felt genuine. Tuning, scales, warmups, exercises, rocking up to school early to practice before homeroom and class starts. It’s something that this anime reminded me of from my normal life 4 years ago and why I loved playing music. At the moment, I’m teaching a student of mine; he’s currently 11, and he’s preparing for his AMEB Preliminary piano exam in a month’s time. Before watching it, I thought it would be a nice experience for him and a neat little milestone. After watching, it’s given me a reason as to why I want to not only prepare him for the exam but to teach as well. I want him to have a chance to not only have the opportunities I had but to make memories as well that only music can deliver. Honestly, it’s full credit to KyoAni for nailing the feel of it. They definitely did their homework.

But man, what an incredible story of hardship and resilience. Thank you Hibike! Euphonium for your story, for reminding me after being so far removed from music as to why I still love it and for reminding me that music has never left me.
