Announcement Small Questions and FAQ Megathread

As the subreddit sees more and more small questions, we thought it would be a good idea to make a thread custom-suited to them. With that, here's a few ground rules!

(1) Have you checked the relevant FAQ for your game yet? If not, it might be a good idea to start there. There's more in these than you might expect, and it's very possible there's already an official answer for your question.

(2) Use the Search function to see if someone might have already asked your question. It might save you some time!

(3) Proper spoiler tags must be used. If you don't know how to use them or what to spoiler tag, please reference the r/Gloomhaven spoiler rules. All the other subreddit rules apply, too, of course.

NOTE - If you have questions related to the Frosthaven puzzle book, including both hints and full solutions, you can check this thread.

If you have questions about unlocking basically anything, this Frosthaven Unlock Guide and this Gloomhaven 2nd Edition Unlock Guide are great resources.

With that said, ask away! The sub is full of very helpful and knowledgeable people. :)

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Gloomhaven 2e and Frosthaven Crossover Item Lists

Sorry for the delay on this, it's been a busy time! We are now releasing updated item import lists both from Frosthaven to Gloomhaven 2e and from Gloomhaven 2e to Frosthaven.

This will be added to Cephalofair's website in the future, although the website is undergoing some work at present so it's difficult to predict how soon that might be. /u/dwarfSA has both games' respective FAQs with this information incorporated and will publish those updates later today.

Gloomhaven 2e FAQ

Frosthaven FAQ

Otherwise you can find that information here and we will sticky this post. This post is entirely spoiler free as we use item numbers so you can browse without worry. Untagged spoilers in the comments will be removed (if you want to discuss an item in this post, use spoiler tags with the item number as the spoiler hint).

As usual, in order to import an item from one game to another, you must first have obtained that item in its origin game.

Digital Frosthaven Need FH Digital Mod Ideas Spoiler

I’m working on a mod pack for me and my friends and was wondering what house rules or mod ideas people have.

Here is what I have implemented so far:

- Every house/custom rule from GH Digital

- Coop Desync fixes (went from several a day to 0 in a week)

- various UI bug fixes

- 10 of 21 GH classes ported over and working. Some of the new mechanics that are in GH but not FH still need some coop testing but work solo.

- Advanced Combat Stats tracking (logs every action in detail so any visualization software can render it)

- Combat Modifier % (how likely are you to draw a negative, 0, or positive modifier from that character’s deck)

- Ambiguous control (AI doesn’t make ambiguous choices for you anymore)

- Dwarf’s Balace doc (most things here that he suggests for a balanced campaign)

What other house rules or mods ideas do you have?

Digital Frosthaven Frosthaven Digital Retraining?

Hi everyone,

The Frosthaven Digital 1.0 patch notes mention a character retraining feature, but I haven't been able to find it. Is it part of a building upgrade or something?

Gloomhaven 1st Ed Can you have multiples of the same summon out at once?

Apologies if this has already been asked but I did a search and couldn’t find a direct answer.

Warning some spoilers below about items and 3 spears

So I started playing 3 spears and I’m wanting to try a build where I use a small item to create a summon for example with the ring of skulls. The idea is I would use the item to create the summon and recover the item with the multiple ways that 3 spears can recover small items. I would then immediately use the ring of skulls again.

Is there anything in the rulebook that disallows this? Has anyone tried the mass summon build with 3 spears before? Seems like you could easily generate 6+ summons after 2-3 turns and just have the summon attacks refresh more items even more quickly.

Jaws of the Lion (JotL) Oh my God, Red Guard's Shield Spikes is permanent

I thought it was for that single round only. I didn't look closely enough to see the red arrow. Omg. No wonder I see so many "tank builds" online around this card! They never made sense to me before! Jfc 🤦

Daily Discussion GH2e Class discussion #1: Bruiser

Post image
95 Upvotes

A few years ago there were daily discussions covering every class, scenario, item, enemy, etc in Frosthaven (and this was done much longer ago for GH1e as well -- JOTL also?). While I'm not going to coordinate anything to that level, to me the classes are the lifeblood of the game, and so 18 once-weekly discussions of the GH 2nd Edition classes might be nice for some community engagement.

In the past, these posts came with an image of the class mat and no additional prompts. I've put some below, but feel free to just talk about any experiences you've had playing or observing the class.

1) What were your overall experiences playing this class? What did you enjoy? What, if anything did you find frustrating?

2) What level-ups did you take and what perks did you prioritize?

3) How long did it take for the class to "click"? How approachable do you think it is for newcomers?

4) How strong/weak did you feel compared to the rest of your party? What were the class strengths/weaknesses overall?

5) How well do you think the class matches theme with mechanics?

6) What builds, cards, combos, etc did you enjoy the most?

7) If relevant, how did it compare to the 1st edition version of the class?

As we go I can post links to previous discussions so people can catch up with them as they go.

And just for flashback fun, here is the 1st edition Brute daily discussion from over 8 years ago so that you can see what people thought back then:

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Special scenario or city / outpost event rewards right before retirement

Frustrating, especially for a child. Not talking about the common extra +10 XP or gold, but really special expensive items with a lore behind them, enhancements (I think that happens, although rarely?), perks.

Do you think a houserule that allows to take it for the new character would be too much? I think of it as an extreme version of Dwarf's FH campaign tweak where new characters would get the rewards that the retiring character gets during the outpost phase, such as purchased resources, IIRC.

It just feels so bad when you do this intense storyline, and then the game is like: Congratulations, you made it! Here is your reward for all that work, the holy ... And then you retire. I mean, story-wise it's kind of beautiful, the character finished what they always set their heart on, and then get this unexpected special thing on top, but from a PLAYER perspective ...

We spontaneously decided to do it for now; it was about a GH2e item worth 35 gold.

A middle ground would be a special deal for the successor, like they have to pay the price of the cheapest same-slot item with their starting money. Now that I think of it, this seems really fine ...

Miniatures & Fan Art Gloomhaven Searchable STL files

I don’t have a 3D printer myself, but I want to print a few files for my own game and share links with friends who do. So I built this: https://octom.nl/gloomhavenstl/

It’s all thanks to the PDF catalogues by u/JeanPistres. Big thanks for the research behind them!

You can filter by edition or scenario, and there’s a “Best pick” per model.

Disclaimer: I don’t own any of this. Gloomhaven belongs to Cephalofair Games and every model to its designer. I only link to the original pages and host no files.

Digital Gloomhaven Bug on Gloomhaven Digital?

My group just played Alchemy Lab, and we felt like we had it well in hand, but suddenly the scenario said we failed, even though we were about to get the last chest and start running back. One of our characters was about to exhaust, but isn't it all SURVIVING characters have to make it out? Or does the whole party?

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Mid-level Circles build & strategies Spoiler

I've been playing Circles to level 6 now, team of 2, Coral (FH) is my teammate. So far, I have not checked any guides online and just tried to find my own way.

What I experienced so far:

  1. I initially overestimated the problem of keeping summons alive and started out with too many cards/perks/items focussed on that. A few of the most efficient ways will do, e. g. both perks + Intervening Apparitions + Unending Dominance + Shadow Dart bottom (situationally) + disarm card + ... appears to be overkill. Also using Rod of Transference, which seems worth it. But in general, I should "risk" a bit more to deal more damage.
  2. For the same reason, I first summon Rock Colossus (up to level 4 Iron Beast), then Covetous Imp (expensive PQ), and might have underestimated the value of the Shadow Wolves.
  3. While Coral is also using a tank build with retaliate, Rock Colossus does decent damage with retaliate and might be a keeper. +1 damage enhancement (cost 200?) might even be worth it.
  4. Quite often, I use a very low initiative to take advantage of the retaliate and retain the option to keep summons safe during that round on my turn with the various tools at my disposal (Ward, teleport perk on Imp, heal, ...).
  5. For level 6, I chose Oozing Manifestation, but plan to use the bottom ability mostly, at least in the first few rests.
  6. Night Demons are a real issue, but I can't make the entire build about them, e. g. would then always need disarm, Burning Passion bottom, ...
  7. Always conflicted between more ranged attack cards and more grant cards.

What do you think? Too few summons? Entirely wrong approach? Maybe use Shadow Wolves, followed up by two rounds with Burning Passion and Planar Protection, which might make them better than most other lost cards (damage dealt + damage to others prevented)? Intervening Apparitions might be worth it on them, as it's basically 3 "more" shadow wolves, but then again, yet another lost card. We recently had disproportionally many opponents with 2 or 3 targets, discouraging me from such experiments.

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Cragheart Level 7 card question

Question about interpretation of 2E Cragheart's level 7 card Brutal Momentum. Top action text reads "Attack 3, Push 2 (add +1 attack and +1 push for each hex containing an obstacle or wall adjacent to you.)" I'm a little confused if the half hexes along the edge of a room tile each count as an adjacent wall. In the example below if Cragheart was at 1 attacking the monster, would it do and Attack 5 Push 4 because there are 2 adjacent wall lines? Then if I"m interpreting it correctly, if the Cragheart were at 2, it would it be an attack 7, push 6?

Frosthaven Frosthaven, which class to start

My group finished playing gloomhaven and had an absolute blast. So we naturally are thrilled to play frosthaven.
I love playing complex characters so I am naturally gravitating towards geminate, but have seen lots of opinions of how a later prosperity geminate would be more fun for the class.
Without much spoilers what do you think of the starter classes (especially the geminate)

Gloomhaven 1st Ed Support Tinkerer build advice (GH 1st ed)

Hello everyone!

I'm currently playing the Tinkerer and have been following Gripeaway's support Tinkerer guide, but unfortunately, it only goes up to level 5. I'm wondering how I should approach the build beyond that point.

My party already has plenty of damage, so I'm not particularly interested in switching to a more offensive or hybrid build. I'd much rather focus on healing and support.

For context, we're all completely new to Gloomhaven, and we haven't unlocked any other characters yet.

Does anyone have any recommendations for other guides or even general strategies, card choices, perks, etc for the later levels?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Digital Frosthaven Help! Some Frosthaven digital questions

  1. How the frog do you change form during long rests with Geminate? I can't find where to click and it should be so obvious 😭
  2. What does morale do?
  3. Are the items you buy when creating a character not available anywhere else? I can't find them anywhere.

Digital Frosthaven Elemental Core Scenario: Monster Targeting Rules Confusion Spoiler

In this scenario the cores have initiative of 1 so they should win tie breakers, yet I was targeted by this attack (6 attack, 2 push, muddle).

Am I missing something about enemy targeting priority like maybe the push/muddle is prioritized over initiative, or is this a genuine bug?

Frosthaven How do you proceed when you forget a rule?

I wanted to keep the title vague, but this pertains to building 90 challenges

challenges don't seem to have a fail mechanism. You do the thing and then it's completed at the end of the scenario. But how do you proceed if you totally forget the rules, and it is impactful? Eg I recently had a challenge to poison any characters adjacent to enemies when they are killed. Completely forgot to keep track of it. Do you just consider it complete anyway? I think that the fair thing to do is apply some judgement and put it to the bottom of the deck and don't take rewards, as though you didn't bring the challenge along in the first place. I'm my case I also have a PQ that counts completed challenges and it doesn't seem fair to count one that we forgot about. But there isn't really a failure mechanism in the rules either. What do you do?

News SPIEL-Rumor: "Emerald Acolytes/Enclave" campaign coming up

Post image
55 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I live in Germany and visited Essen SPIEL yesterday. I was lucky to grab a seat for a demo session of Mercenaries Wanted. They only had a print-and-play prototype, because of some customs issues.

Price (CEO of Cephalofair) did our demo. He explained that each player is in charge of one mercenary company and strongly hinted, that they are working on a "new campaign" featuring on of these companies called the "Emerald Enclave" and pointed at the green one (left side in the photo). The actual game material said "Emerald Acolytes" though, but maybe he misspoke.

The way he said it, was in this style of "we may or may not be... wink wink" "you might want to take a closer look at the green one" etc.

I don't really have any more information. Just wanted to put this out there. I hope it will be a new JotL-style campaign - that's the impression I got from him, but cannot say for sure.

He was super nice and the demo was a lot of fun. Unfortunately we couldn't buy the game yet, but have to preorder.

If you have any questions, just ask. :)

Frosthaven Geminate Perk Question (Prevent condition)

Simple question(s) that may have been answerrd already please just redirect me there. If I play geminate and there is the X card (think it's reckless jab) that tells me to take condition too apply disarm for instance (if i don't have it already).

  1. can inin that window fire the perk to NOT take the condition but regardless disarm the opponent?

  2. similarly what about smoldering hatred for instance, it needs me to take muddle for too increase output of damage. if i take it then prevent it, to me that's like it canceled it out and i would be back to onle attack 2. does it work or is this interaction anti-synergy?

  3. maybe it is only thought for prevention of let's say stuff that happens on its own like brittle with 2x AMD or self poison as "standalone" event on bottom of a certain level 3 card. true or false?

please clear up my confusion ;)

thanks for the answers

Frosthaven Blast from the past -- some old FH starter cards that got changed

Thumbnail
gallery
38 Upvotes

I might be the only one that finds this interesting, but going back and playing FH digital got me thinking about the first versions of cards we saw when the Kickstarter was announced and what was changed in the final version that I had forgotten about. Here are a few from the first batch of starter cards. I didn't include anything where a number just got changed by 1 or that sort of thing, just cards where the ability is significantly different in the final version of the class.

Digital Frosthaven I tried to force second mastery on deathwalker on my second (ever) mission, and it was not fun (until it was)

I feel like the mastery(ies?) force you into suboptimal plays so much, it reshapes your gameplan entirely. I lost horribly trying to juggle/force *two masteries and all three personal battle quests on first try not knowing anything about the map, but pulled through on the second (with ummmm a wee bit of undo savescum, I play on the new PC release). It felt like such a huge relief afterwards (though my dw had to exhaust by the end due to burning too many cards to maintain the spawning/consuming cycle). Can't wait until I try it again at some more reasonable level and with some reasonable experience haha what a great game

Gloomhaven 2nd Ed Spoilers - Chest for Scenario 88 Spoiler

My group is playing Scenario 88 and looted the chest in the final room, but the chest number is already marked off. Chest 51 is what we have. Can anyone confirm if this is a duplicate, if it's a typo, or if we messed up somewhere else and marked the wrong chest?

Frosthaven Daredevil: are persistent lost bonuses “in the lost pile”?

Pg 38 of the rules says “…is still considered lost and must be moved from the active area to the lost pile once the active bonus is no longer in effect.”
Which makes it sound like it’s lost but in the lost pile. Correct?

Digital Frosthaven Blinkblade and Rules Library Error [spoiler Blinkblade cards]

I keep getting an error when ending turn after using the last charge of Double Time on my Blinkblade. It seems like it doesn't like earning 4+ xp on the same turn or maybe there is an attack limit or something.

I can't tie it to specific cards, but I tend to play Precision Timing, Twin Strike, or Relentless Augmentation which give doubled xp effects. The crash doesn't happen during the turn or immediately after the xp is earned. Only when clicking End Turn. I've submitted multiple error reports, but not sure if there is a bug forum or something to view known issues. The Steam forum doesn't have any reports of this.

Anyone else get this error and find a work around? It makes Novablade significantly worse, if you can't use the third charge.
