News Disney+ rolls out tweaked “Playlists” feature globally - a blend of linear channels and the control of streaming

2 Upvotes

A couple of years ago, Disney+ began trialling a Playlists feature in the US (called “streams” there). There it was limited to just a small handful of rotating themes. You chose one and it simply played like a linear channel with no real control.

The global version has been significantly expanded and somewhat enhanced.

Firstly, there are far more options to choose from. These include shows, genres, characters and even just general show types. The playlists available at launch are:

* The Simpsons
* Modern Family
* Adult Animation
* Comedy
* True Crime
* Romantic Comedies
* Bob’s Burgers
* Comedy Movies
* Anime
* Family Guy
* Action and Adventure Movies
* Crime
* Drama
* Documentary
* Horror
* Reality
* Bluey
* Disney+ Playtime
* Made in Korea
* Mickey and Friends
* Thrillers
* Sports Documentaries
* Music
* Musicals
* Music Videos
* Pixar Movies
* Princess Movies
* Romance
* Sci-Fi Movies
* Spidey and Iron Man
* Stand-Up Comedy
* Walt Disney Animation Studios Movies
* Cars (Pixar)

A further enhancement for this global rollout is that viewers have the option to restart an in-progress film or show and are even able to skip to the next item in the “queue”. When choosing to skip you get a little window preview of what you’ll be jumping forward to, so you can easily keep jumping until something catches your eye. Of course, the main benefit of this new feature is that you can take the fuss out of choosing and revert to a more old school, linear experience. These streams are ad-free by design and thus can apparently only be used by those on an ad-free plan.

The rollout is ongoing. Some devices will lag behind others. TVs seem to be getting the feature first. You’ll find the extensive row of playlists on the 7th row of the homepage (at least as of launch day). Thankfully, the row stands out due to unique formatting and intentionally oversized thumbnails.

News Under new management; welcome back, this place needs a good clean

8 Upvotes

I know, this place has been abandoned for literally years and the majority of people have probably given up coming here. But in my opinion, Disney+ has quietly become one of the better value streaming services in the UK since this place became a ghost town.

Not only did Hulu become an official brand but Disney have gone all-in on acquiring big name, 3rd-party acquisitions for it. Then we have the launch of ESPN. Once again, all part of a standard subscription. Sure, it doesn’t exactly house A-list sports right now (with the exception of the Women’s Champions League, perhaps) but Disney are holding true to their word by continuously announcing major new agreements. Formula e is their latest sports pick up and that is a legitimately surging sport.

The point is, Disney+ UK is reopening right at a time when the potential for discussion and news sharing is substantial and exciting. So let’s shake off the rust and bring this place back to life.

Channel 4 and The Walt Disney Company today announced a landmark agreement that will bring Channel 4 to Disney+ in the UK and Ireland from early 2027.

The agreement includes multiple Channel 4 shows being made available on-demand each year on Disney+, at the same time as their release via Channel 4. These include drama Maya featuring Bella Ramsey,comedy Stepping Up featuring Denise Welch*,* and reality format Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins - plus Channel 4’s main TV channel and additional on-demand content.

The collaboration with Channel 4 is one of the most significant that Disney+ has agreed globally to bring high-quality, local content to customers in markets around the world. Building on their long-standing relationship, this deal will see Disney integrating Channel 4’s distinctive public service programming within the premium streaming environment of Disney+, enhancing Channel 4’s reach and bringing more choice to Disney+ customers.

From early 2027, Disney+ customers will be able to watch Channel 4’s linear HD channel, plus hundreds of hours of its acclaimed scripted and unscripted content through its on-demand catalogue, from Big Mood and Tip Toe to 24 Hours in A&E, directly on Disney+ at no extra cost.

Adam Smith, Chairman Direct-to-Consumer, Disney Entertainment, said: “Local broadcaster partnerships are very important as we build our content libraries and serve fans around the world. Channel 4 has created shows with strong appeal to audiences in the UK and Ireland, and we’re excited to bring some of those favorites to Disney+. This agreement is the latest example of our global strategy, pairing high-quality local programming and cultural relevance with a complementary audience and more personalized streaming experience on Disney+.”

Priya Dogra, Chief Executive, Channel 4, said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Disney+ to give audiences even more ways to discover and enjoy Channel 4’s brilliant shows. Channel 4 is home to some of the UK and Ireland’s most talked about and trusted programming, and this new service will help those shows reach viewers in new places. This exciting step shows how collaboration between broadcasters and streamers can create more choice and value for audiences.”

Further details on launch timings and content available will be confirmed in due course.

Discussion Language audio settings

2 Upvotes

I'm watching "Dont Trust the B---- in Apartment 23" right now.

I was just playing around with the language audio settings, curious to see what the experience would be like to people who use them.

I selected the Polish option, and the audio is just a guy repeating the lines the characters say as they say them! The same voice for every actor. You can hear the original audio under the guy talking. He's not trying to put any sort of different tone or inflexion for separate characters...

I don't know why, but I found it a bit amusing/jarring and had to share some place 😆

Has anyone else experienced weird/amusing/bad dubs?

Following on from the feature’s launch earlier this month, Disney+ has added several playlists designed to get you in the mood for spooky season. These are:

* Huluween Episodes (16+)
* Halloween Movies (12+)
* The Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror (12+)
* Halloween Episodes (12+)
* Huluween Movies (18+)

It’s also worth noting that none of these have replaced the “Horror” playlist.

Discussion New subscriber suggestions

3 Upvotes

Hi, I’ve just got Disney plus uk this morning after not having it for about a year or two. What’s on there that I can add to my watchlist? I’ve noticed that they’ve removed the different studio sections on the home page, so it’s much more difficult to find anything without already knowing the thing you want to watch is on there.
