Community Announcement Tiny Community Update - NSFW & AI imagery.

Hello Pixel Pushers!

We wanted to make a slight adjustment on NSFW rules and talk about Ai a bit more.

Underage NSFW content:
Strange we have to add this to the rules but drawings of anyone, be it fiction or non fiction, who are canonically underage in their main story, in a NSFW setting or style is strictly prohibited. There has been an influx of this content. There is no grey zone with this content.

Complexity of Ai Content:
Artist and art communities are seeing the rapid advancement of Ai tools both as full generative tools and software/app inbuilt tools. What was once a pretty black and white situation is increasingly becoming blended as Ai features are being inbuilt in drawing apps and programs.

Our community is focused on the human and less focused on being Anti Ai (we chose not to have the anti debate but pro human focus primarily). Moderating Ai content has become the single most time demanding part of moderating this space and it’s becoming increasingly harder to do so.

Some redditors are going out of their way to create Ai art and using Ai to prove it’s real art. It’s no longer a situation of a Redditor accident assuming Ai art is allowed her, but neferious acts of lying and community sabatoge.

As a result of these nefarious acts, you may see occasional posts existing longer than you’d expect when looking obviously suspect Ai. We occasionally leave these posts up to allow the community to do the amazing investigative work you all do on susing out Ai content. This both serves the community helping us moderate and serves your fellow redditor as it helps educate everyone on how Ai is being used in art workflows (for good or for bad).

As a result of The influx in Ai, we are going to clarify in the rules the following: we will from here on out treat Ai as guilty until proven innocent vs our previous policy of innocent until proven guilty. We will use our discretion (with the noble investigative work you all provide) to rule if content is Ai confirmed or suspect. If it’s suspect, it will be up to OP to repost with proof that the work is truly theirs and hand created. This may be an inconvenience to some, but the health and trust of the community is our priority.

We won’t allow the beautiful hand crafted digital art that takes you a ton of hours of learning and dedication to be consumed by content that is created by a machine by a few words in a prompt.

Realize for us, all we do here is to create a stable, fun, safe community that is built around hand created digital art. We’ll be fine tuning rules and policies as we go forward to ensure this place remains that.

If you’d like to discuss this or anything else in a more organic and fluid way, visit our slow growing quaint and quiet discord: https://discord.gg/jMXvJCjaKc

EDIT: added a clarification post on proof of creation content:

Community Announcement Community Update

Hello Digital Artist!

After taking in data, gathering feedback from the community, and discussing ideas with you all, we have made some organizational changes to this subreddit. I'd like to lay out those changes here while also giving some insight into what we have planned for the future.

The Changes:

Rules:

Our biggest change has been to restructure, clarify, and simplify the rules. We wanted to make the rules more accessible and easier to read while being clear with the expectations of the sub. The language itself has been simplified assuming most of us are responsible and able to interpret beyond having to write a legal document. Our aim is to treat you all like adults and expect everyone to act like one.

NSFW:

Most of our energy was spent trying to understand the dynamic of NSFW content on our subreddit and on reddit overall. We determined that the community likes having the ability to share NSFW content but find it frustrating that certain content 'finds their eyes' more than others. The issue with NSFW content on reddit is as much a reddit issue as it is one for our subreddit. Like all social media, NSFW content tends to get upvoted more, thus finding itself in your featured feeds more. This can give community members a sense that said content dominates this space. We've monitored the content of this sub since being given moderation perms and this is far from the truth. A vast majority of content is amazing SFW art that gets little attention.

As a result, we have clarified our rules for NSFW but added a heavy moderator discretion section. You may not personally like what we moderate or don't moderate, but our goal is to balance freedom of expression with the safety of the community as well as combating algorithmic imbalances.

Wiki Section:

The wiki section has been cleaned up to be more concise and cleaner.

Take down notices:

We have added clearer takedown notices that reflect our rules. Notices allow you to review the rules while encouraging you to contact us if you disagree.

Community Moderation:

One BIG thing we'd like to encourage is empowering community members to help keep the community safe. One big thing we notice is when a post is suspect of being AI, comments flood said post. If you suspect any post breaks any rule, please report the post. Reporting does more to help us moderate than flooding the comment sections. Enough reports auto trigger a moderation action if the rule break is serious enough. Moderators see themselves as stewards of the community, not owners. This space is nothing without your involvement.

Flair:

We have simplified flair to allow you quicker access to tag your artwork appropriately. Although flair isn't required (unless the work is NSFW), we encourage its usage as it helps people find your artwork.

Discussions:

The previous rules disallowed various topics of discussion. We have moved away from those rules and encourage the community to share ideas, tools, techniques etc. However, if a post is deemed to be self promotion or promoting something else in disguise, the post will be deleted. There is a difference between sharing ideas and selling ideas.

The Future

Now that we've tightened the space up, we have some goals for the future that we'd love to hear feedback on:

Not another Discord!

We are developing a discord to give digital artists a place to relax, kick back, share art etc. We see the pattern on why art discords fail and want to avoid those things. We won't gamify the chats, disallow cliquey language, harassment, etc. We want to create a welcoming, professional, educational, and safe space to network and enjoy content and knowledge.

Weekly Posts:

We are open to the idea of creating a weekly post cycle surrounding various topics. One big one is opening up a section for self promotion; allowing community members to post their socials and other links. Disallowing as normal posts isn't there to keep you from growing, but to keep the community healthy. We understand artists want to connect with each other and this can help that.

Community Competition:

We are in need for a new community avatar and banner. Stay tuned to a community competition that will allow you all to create the those items for this space. Winners will win a permanent shout out in the description!

Thank You!

Since becoming moderators for this community, its been a pleasure seeing the absolutely amazing talent here as well as the comments clearly showing a care for this space. Although the noise and controversy often gets the most attention, in aggregate, the regular day to day content and posts are beautiful, encouraging, and fun to be a part of. I'm personally honored to exist in the same space as the talent this community projects. Feel free at any time to contact mod support with your thoughts or comment here.

Community Announcement Mod saying hello and a small community update.

Hi fellow pixel pushers!

It's been a bit since I last shared some thoughts on the health and status of our amazing community. I wanted to brief you all on some changes that have been made since my last post.

Updated Rules:

Self promotion, Selling, & Soliciting:
The biggest moderated item in our queue is often related to this category. There was a gap in the understanding with what we mean by this rule, so the rule has been updated.

Our rules can sometimes be complex, but they all point to one single idea: This space is simply to share your original digital art and your knowledge of digital art craft. That is it. Artist's are one of the most vulnerable people to be taken advantaged of by nefarious actors who pray on your hopes, dreams, and ambitions as an artists. Promises made to help you sell art, be a better artist, fake commissions, the list goes on. We want this space to serve a simple core place in your life which is to share your amazing work and your amazing craft. That is it. I take it personal in wanting to protect you from all the noise the internet tries to force onto your eyes.

However, we understand the business of art and art creation itself is often tangled up in each other. We have ran a weekly megathread that allows any and all self promotional content. This will turn into a monthly pinned thread that allows you all to post all your socials, links, surveys, and anything your beautifully beating soliciting heart desires.

Ai Content: A tale of survivor bias:
We have seen a reduction in blatant generative Ai being posted and reported. We also understand this could simply be a survivors bias; Ai is getting better and easier to trick the human eye. Some people are better then others are detecting whether a work is Ai or not, but as moderators, that tool is less useful than others. When Ai is suspected, we may go down a rabbit hole of researching an artist to see if there is a record of creating art. We aren't perfect and sometimes Ai slips through and may never be taken down. The idea is achieving perfect purity but pushing to bring that content as close to 0 as possible. Sometimes we may deliberately leave Ai art up because the comments in the post becomes a great resource for the community to learn about the trends in Ai so you can help us detect it and report it.

We also know art creation tools are increasingly baking in Ai functionality. Ai is inevitable but so is human created digital art. The goal of our Ai rule is not to be anti Ai, but to be pro human art. Your choices and art direction during the creative process is what makes digital art what it is.

Reddit has introduced Ai moderation tools that have helped us track users and posts that break all of our rules including Ai. Humans will not be able to moderate Ai out of the internet alone. We will increasingly rely on machine vs machine when it comes to keep our spaces clean of the noise allowing you, the human, to come through. Our goal is and will always remain to promote the human and the human creative process here.

We also want to stress one important idea here. As we collectively try to beat back the Ai posts to keep our space human, we should not lose our humanity in the process. Attacking artists, calling them names, being angry or vitriolic towards another human is not only wrong but disallowed. Venting your anti ai frustrations towards a regular person accomplishes nothing. If you want Ai change, content your representative or whom ever leads your respective nation. Maintain your decency and humanity here.

NSFW:
NSFW content has found its center in our space. When we were volunteered to moderate this space, it was the nosiest aspect of our community. Outside the occasional speed bumps, we have found a happy place with some minor exceptions and issues.

The first issue is Reddit and its featured section based on its algorithm. My profession IRL is I work in theater arts with a degree in graphic design and working on my master's in media design. My career has simply been visual communication in one form or another. I am not a computer scientist and can't begin to pretend I know how reddit decides what you look at when you pop open the app or website.

What I can say, however, is there is a distinct difference between one's experience of the community if its purely through the featured section and what we see being posted in order of being posted. As a moderator, I spend a decent amount of time scrolling through the most recent posts and can say without a doubt you are some of the most talented and fascinating creators. The featured section does not come close to representing that diversity and skill level. Instead, what usually gets shown is the heavily commented and heavily upvoted stuff.

We often see the posts that get the most upvotes are also the biggest battlegrounds between people. Typically, this will be NSFW or politically driven art. People will quietly upvote something they like or agree with while the comments attack those who do. It's a strange phenomenon here that ends up pushing the most divisive content to the surface.

I encourage you to visit our community main page on occasion and sort by new. Upvote and comment on your fellow artists who put on full display their amazing craft skill and talent. Be the change you want on the internet while we fight bots, 'gooners,' and other swarms of low hanging fruit on the internet.

The second issue we have been encountering is tagging NSFW content. The rule of thumb is, if you question 'is this NSFW,' it likely is.

The issue with NSFW as a reference is work has become increasingly diverse for everyone. My particular job has nudity everywhere for reference in art making. Someone in a very strict work setting may have a different definition of of NSFW that is much more conservative. Someone in the US may also have one general idea whereas someone in Japan another.

OP should use their judgement airing on the side of caution and use a NSFW tag. Our moderators will use their own discretion as well. For me, my rule of thumb is a subject matter could be seen in a public setting among little kids, it isn't NSFW. This is coming from a north east left leaning individuals approach. There is so much cultural discussion and significance tied up in designating something NSFW so this is a very fluid area. However, as all things on a spectrum, some content is obviously NSFW and in some cases, obviously too NSFW for our space. NSFW content is a fluid and dynamic space.

You ARE the community:

Moderators do not own subreddits. They are owned by reddit for its users. Moderators are unpaid caretakers who have a love for what the community represents enough to take time out of our busy lives to keep the spaces clean. It's often thankless and more often than not, a job that turns us into punching bags. We understand the risk and the job but I personally will keep one focus: Maintaining a safe and healthy space for you to share your digital art creations and craft.

But the MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THIS COMMUNITY IS YOU. Your DMs matter. Your voice matters. YOUR REPORTS MATTER. You have an active role in keeping this space clean and healthy for all its members. I can not stress enough how important your DMs and reports are in helping us keep the space clean. Reddit is a world wide community with the most extreme diversity one can imagine. Without the input from that diverse community, all we do as moderators is impress upon the community our world view. So please DM us and report to express your thoughts.

Thank you!

Being in the presence of the diverse and amazing talent this community offers is one the things I am most honored by. I want to thank you for giving me great artwork to enjoy daily as I moderate the space.

As a reminder, we have a discord: https://discord.com/invite/jMXvJCjaKc

I'll admit, it's a very sleepy discord which isn't built to be hyper, loud, or over active. My goal with the discord isn't to create more noise in your already noise filled life, but a space you can simply come to share your art, connect with others, and enjoy some on the fly convo. Hope to see you all there!

Community Art Competition!

Hello amazing [r/DigitalArt](r/DigitalArt) Artist and designers! As stated in my previous community update, I wanted to run a fun community competition to create a new icon and banner for YOUR community. Us mods have been tasked to clean up the wayward nature of this space, but ultimately, this community is yours and I'd love to reflect that through this competition. We want to reflect an intent at hosting a safe positive community for the amazing digital artist of reddit by cleaning out the cobwebs and put a new coat of paint on the place.

Competition 1: Icon

Deliverables

  • Must be Snoo: Reddit's mascot
  • Must represent digital art in some manner
  • Must be SFW
  • Can not be offensive in any way.

Posting Format:

  • Title format: "Icon Competition Submission - (name of your piece)
  • Flair tagged "Icon Competition Submission"
  • Description should include your process of making the icon, software/hardware used, and any other information
  • Please include proof of work as well (screenshot of work

    inside the app used).

Competition 2: Banner

Deliverables

  • Must represent digital art in some manner.
  • Must be SFW
  • Can not be offensive.
  • Should represent the breath, scope, and depth of this rich and diverse community.

Posting Format:

  • Title format: "Banner Competition Submission - (name of your piece)
  • Flair tagged "Banner Competition Submission"
  • Description should include your process of making the icon, software/hardware used, and any other information
  • Please include proof of work as well (screenshot of work

    inside the app used).

We'll give the community a month to create the piece and enter it for consideration. We are unsure how we'll go about doing the selection process, but the above setup will allow us to gather the images to create a vote like situation in the future.

Winner of the competition will have their work shown with a byline shout out in the description and wiki page.

We look forward to seeing what you all come up with! We hope everyone has fun creating this.

Community Announcement Small Community Update to the Rules

We wanted to be transparent with our minor adjustment to our recent rules revision.

NSFW Comments

We recently updated our rules around NSFW content and will add a section prohibiting complaints about NSFW content under a post that has been approved. If you feel a NSFW post exceeds the limits laid out in the rules, please report the post so we can review it. We also welcome the community to voice their concerns regarding NSFW content in mod mail.

Can I sell this for $_____

We are prohibiting posts asking for advice on whether a piece of art can be sold for a specific price. Art pricing is highly subjective and posts like this are either gateways to self promotion or cause vitriolic disagreement. There will never be a right answer that satisfies OP or those who comment.

Feel free to contact mods for any questions related to these changes or any other questions.

Community Announcement Ai proof of creation micro clarification.

Tiny Tiny Tiny clarification.

My previous community post mentioned new rules regarding Ai.

You do not have to upload proof of creation with your original post.

This only pertained to those who had a post taken down as suspect Ai. During the take down process, you will be asked to supply proof of creation. Most posts survive moderation unscathed and aren’t moderated out. If a post is suspected of Ai, you will then be asked to reupload with proof.

If you want to upload with proof on your own original post, that not only helps with that post but when we review accounts and see your history during a moderation action, it helps over all. But uploading proof is not mandatory on every post. Only reuploads after a take down.

Community Announcement Happy Friday and Thank you!

Wanted to drop a small community update.

Since we were elected by Reddit about a month ago, we’ve had a large task to bringing some semblance of order to a chaotic sub.

Since updating and clarifying the rules, we’ve seen more compliance with the rules and less spammy and junk posts. We’ve also seen a calmer space relating to sensitive topics like NSFW. Not everyone is happy with where we put the line, but generally, the space feels much more relaxed on the subject matter.

I want to also thank those diligent community members who report posts and go far above and beyond to sus out members who steal art or mask their work as original when it’s Ai. Some of you should be detectives! We are constantly monitoring the posts and your reports so please keep it up. It helps keep the space clean for everyone to enjoy.

We also want to remind you that your feature section or main feed will more often show controversial or higher upvoted posts. More often than not, it’s NSFW. If you want to get a good idea of the breath and scope of this sub and it’s insanely amazing artists and creator, visit the subs main page and sort by new. A large majority of what is posted is SFW and amazing. Those artists deserve some love in an algorthmically skewed battleground.

Lastly, don’t forget to join our slow growing discord: https://discord.gg/jMXvJCjaKc

Thanks again!

Community Announcement Reddit Glitches and Moderation

On occasion, Reddit servers seem to have the hiccups and do odd and crazy things. Today this happened. We had a number of false flags on content and a few posts come through a dozen times causing havoc for our moderators. It becomes difficult to tell what flag is genuine or systemically incorrect when we’re in the midst of these weird hiccups.

As a result, posts may be taken down, accounts may be banned, until we realize it’s a system issue. We go back and try to mop up the mess and clear the issues so we encourage patience.

As an aside to this, we ask when you challange an action against you, do so with decorum. We are fallible humans working with fallible systems. We volunteer our time to help maintain a healthy community for everyone to enjoy and share their wonderful works. Hostility towards moderators will not be tolerated.

With that said, if there were actions against you in the past hour you found weren’t fair, feel free to contact us in modmail to rectify it!

Also, we started a discord for those interested in a more informal place to share your love for your craft!
