Backend dev wanting to switch to security. Anyone who’s made this move or similar, what was your path?

• Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m a backend engineer with 4+ years of experience (Python, Django, AWS). Lately I’ve lost the spark. The curiosity I used to feel about writing code is gone, and I feel like I am burned out. I don’t want to keep doing this the way I have been, and I’m looking at cybersecurity as a way to pivot to a new career.

I am thinking of completing the Comptia Security+ certification. I mean being a backend developer it should be somewhat easy to pivot to a Web Application Security Engineer but I do not see much vacancies respectively to that role.

If you’ve been through this, whether you went from backend development into security, I’d really appreciate your help.

  • What was your path? Which certifications, side projects or other steps actually mattered?
  • How long did the switch take?
  • Starting from a backend background, what would you do in the first 3 months?
  • Did you take a salary cut and start with a junior level roles or how does it work?

Any advice, roadmaps or honest warnings are welcome. Thank you!

Junior developers in Nepal: would this first-week engineering practice feel realistic?

Hi r/devnep. I work on ArcLab Sim, a free desktop-browser practice experience for a software engineer’s first week. In a fictional team, you navigate workplace messages and a ticket, inspect a running Next.js/TypeScript app, make a code change, run tests, and explain what you did across five days. It works best in desktop Chrome or Edge.

I would value feedback from junior developers in Nepal, especially anyone moving from tutorials into team work. If you try Day 1 at https://sim.arclab.app/, where does the workflow feel unlike a real first week? What step is confusing enough that you might stop? If you have already joined a team, what part of that first week was hardest to practice beforehand?

I’m affiliated with ArcLab; this is a request for honest product feedback. This post was prepared with AI assistance.

Yantra – interactive, step-by-step diagrams from JSON, as one offline HTML file

Namaste everyone,

I've been building an open-source project called Yantra and wanted to share it here first and get honest feedback from the local dev community.

What it does: you write a short JSON file describing boxes, arrows and "steps", and Yantra turns it into an interactive diagram in a single HTML file. You don't place anything by hand; the layout and arrows are automatic. The reader can click through it step by step, so a system or process is explained in order instead of all at once. The file works fully offline, so you can share it on email, Viber or a pen drive.

It handles architecture diagrams, sequence diagrams, flowcharts, ER diagrams, org charts and mind maps. It can also import from Mermaid, draw.io and PlantUML.

Why it might be useful here:

- The viewer interface is available in Nepali, and there's a Nepali example diagram in the repo (a health referral flow).

- It's useful for project reports, college assignments, client handovers and documenting your system for a team.

- It works with AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. Ask the AI for the JSON, paste it into the playground, and you get the diagram.

- It's free and MIT licensed: no account and no tracking.

GitHub: https://github.com/niyankhadka/yantra

What I'd love help with:

- Is the Nepali translation natural, or does it sound machine-translated? Corrections are very welcome.

- What diagrams do you make often at work or in college that this should support?

- Any bugs or confusing parts in the docs.

If you find it useful, a GitHub star helps a lot with visibility. Happy to answer any questions in the comments. Dhanyabad!

Final-year Computer Engineering student looking for career advice

Hey fellow developers from Nepal, I'm a final-year Computer Engineering student who will be graduating in a few months.

My background:

  • CGPA: 3.68/4.0
  • Internship: Currently doing a 3-month full-time SWE internship at a foreign-based company.
  • Freelance: 6 months of project-based full-stack development + 1 month of maintenance (averaging 4–5 hours/week).
  • Volunteer: 1 month of web development.
  • Projects: Several full-stack, backend, and ML projects.
  • Stack: React, TypeScript, Python, FastAPI, Django, PostgreSQL, Docker, etc.

My concerns:

Most junior SWE openings seem to require 1–2 YOE, which I don't have. Seeing other students graduate with 2–3 internships makes me wonder if I'm already behind. I'm worried I'll be rejected before employers even consider my projects or skills.

On top of that, I've recently started questioning whether I even enjoy software engineering. I initially chose Computer Engineering because I thought I liked computers and programming, but after starting my internship, I've found the reality of coding for 8 hours a day surprisingly draining and isolating. Maybe it's me being new to the job and the job being a remote one but idk.

I also often rely on AI tools when coding, which sometimes makes me feel like I'm just faking my abilities. While I enjoy understanding how things work and solving interesting problems, I rarely feel motivated to program for its own sake anymore.

My questions:

  1. Am I realistically qualified for junior SWE positions with my current experience?
  2. Would employers prioritize candidates with multiple internships over me?
  3. Should I pursue another internship or start applying for junior roles?
  4. Is feeling disillusioned with programming this early normal, or should I seriously consider exploring other career paths?

I'm definitely finishing my degree, but I'm uncertain about what comes next. I'd appreciate realistic advice from people who've experienced something similar.

Thanks

Is this a good PC build? Or what else do you recommend?

Without monitor and graphics card, this will come around 1.26L to me. The reason why it is expensive is because the components are good and not the trash and used ones like some Interactive Computer Systems uses. The only place I think I could get a discount is on DDR4 RAM.

I will also buy an UPS along with the PC.

What next?

40 yr old techie here. Been working for over 15 years both in and out of the country. Currently earning close to 3L per month and Building a house for my parents (both in nepal). Just transitioned into a new job that looks like its going to be my last job. Its a 100M dollar company and Ive been hired to steer the department for the outgoing head during the transition. I've seen it all here in Nepal's IT landscape and feel like this is where I'll retire. Does this feel like a cop out or is this good enough?

Will it fit? What happens when you run an open weight model?

Whether a model runs properly on your hardware depends more than just a download size.

I wrote an article on what factors we need to consider before we try out the models locally or in rented GPUs.

If you are planning to run models locally or self-hosting, this article can help.

Festival Allowance Ujuri

Has anyone tried filing a complaint for festival allowance and successfully gotten it without any issues?

I soooooo want to file a complaint but i am skeptical thinking if i might get in some trouble and also if its actually helpful. Also,

- I am on my notice period(laid off by the company)

- it ends before Dashain

- it also hasn't been a year of my joining

None of the other employees have gotten the bonus either. Salary pani time ma didaina ani bonus ko ta expectation nai xaina but am i eligible for the bonus and it is worth it to file a complaint?

Also, if yo month ko salary aauda bonus aayena vane what is the last date that i can file a complaint given that this is the last month of my employment in this company?

SyntaxNepal — A Discord server built by developers, for developers in Nepal 🇳🇵

Hey everyone,

If you're tired of inactive servers, dead groups, or spaces where people rarely talk code, we started **SyntaxNepal**.

The goal is simple: create a focused, toxicity-free space for students, freshers, and experienced devs across Nepal to build projects, solve bugs, and learn in public together.

### What we have set up:

* 🛠️ **Custom Built-In Dev Bot (`SyntaxBot`):** We developed an in-house bot with utility commands like `/formatcode` (PEP 8 auto-formatting), `/cheatsheet`, `/npm`, `/pypi`, and live documentation search directly in chat.

* ⏱️ **Focus Study Rooms (`/study`):** Spin up automated, temporary focus threads with custom timers for grinding DSA, exam prep, or building features without cluttering the main channels.

* 🤝 **Peer Code-Help:** Dedicated threads to paste logs and get unstuck without getting ignored.

* 🗺️ **Roadmaps & Learning:** Curated role-based roadmaps for Frontend, Backend, DevOps, and AI.

* 🚀 **Showcase & Feedback:** Share your GitHub repositories, live deployments, and get constructive peer reviews.

Whether you're starting with your first Python script or working on full-stack production apps, you're welcome to jump in.

👉 **Join the Discord:** https://discord.gg/z4GEx4aDB

Drop a quick greeting in `#introductions` and let us know what stack you're working on!

Good Code Vs Working Code

What really makes code "good"?

I find myself staring at my IDE asking this exact question. Whether I am binding complex logic together or copying and pasting a snippet to patch a problem, there is a massive gap between working code and good code. But as a beginner, that gap feels incredibly hard to see.

These days, anyone can prompt an AI or use an agentic tool to generate functional code in seconds. Many of us are actually learning to code alongside AI. But just because the AI gives me code that runs and clears the error console doesn't mean it’s good code. It might be inefficient, unscalable, or an absolute nightmare to maintain later.

If the code works, but the AI (or a copy-paste source) doesn't teach me why it works or if it's best practice... how are we as beginners supposed to know the difference?

How do you personally define "good code" vs. "just working code"? What are the green flags I should be looking out for when reviewing code—whether it's written by a human or an AI?

Would love to hear your thoughts, rules of thumb, or stories from when you were starting out! 👇

UP and COMING Nepali youtuber.

Been making some content recently and thought I’d shamelessly drop my channel here lmao.

I mostly post Valorant, Minecraft, meme/reaction type stuff basically whatever I’m enjoying at the moment

Still pretty small rn, tara trying to make the videos actually entertaining instead of just uploading random gameplay!!

If you’re into gaming + dumb shit + Nepali creator vibes, maybe give it a check out haha.

Would genuinely appreciate any feedback too, good or bad, bhana hai 🙏
