Leaks Pee leaks all the time, wanna quit.

• Upvotes

It's my sixth baby in cloth diaper, but the others are a lot older and the brands have changed.

He is five weeks old. We have mostly 7-12 and 7-20 lbs diapers because the 10-30 are way too big. We have all in one and pocket diapers, a few brands (la petite Ourse, mini hip, elf).

Pee leaks constantly. Three times just this night.

I'm tired and I really want to use cloth diapers but I'm overwhelmed. I don't remember ever having this problem. Where do I start to find the issue?

Let's chat Is there a reason why I shouldn’t cloth diaper overnight?

My 10 week old baby is currently only cloth diapered during the day. I use disposables overnight because I’m concerned about how cloth diapers don’t wick moisture away from the skin the same way disposables do. Will my baby wake up more if I cloth diaper overnight due to feeling wet? Will she be more prone to diaper rash?

Is there a reason why I shouldn’t use cloth diapers overnight?

Washing Mold.. am I overthinking it??

I’m new to cloth diapering and have been loving it. I was just about to add to my stash and then.. I found mold in one of my PUL covers. I noticed the black splotches while I was fluffing everything after my first wash. I didn’t notice stains on anything else. I threw away the cover (maybe that’s silly but mold freaks me out) and washed everything again with a heavy duty cycle, hot water, and 4 oz of bleach. I also plan to wash more often — I went 4 days this time which was clearly a mistake.

Should I be all good now?? I just don’t want this to be a recurring issue with the rest of my stash and certainly don’t want to waste money throwing things away.

Thanks!!

How's my stash Does this sound like enough to get started?

2 Rumparooz covers (4-11 lbs)
6 Babygoal covers (7-33 lbs)
12 Newborn trifolds (6-10 lbs)
21 Small trifolds (9-16 lbs)
12 Pocket diapers (8-35 lbs)
23 Liners/pocket inserts

Does this sound like enough to get us through until we need larger sizes? We were gifted a lot of premie/newborn/size 1 disposable diapers that we will probably alternate with while we work on transitioning to all cloth.

Washing How do we deal with the first (small and sticky) solids poops?

My baby is almost 8months and now that she is eating more solids, her poop has become very sticky. She has a few BMs a day now, but they are all pretty small still.

Despite the BMs being small, each still needs 3 or 4 cloth wipes to clean her up.

At this point, I believe I am meant to swish the poop in the toilet and clean the solids off, however, while there is enough to scrape, it is so sticky that it tends to just smear. I have a small spatula.

Additionally, how do I clean the cloth wipes? Because the poop is sticky, it doesn’t usually transfer much to the diaper, so the wipe gets the majority. But it’s hard to unfold the wipe after and again, too sticky to wipe well.

So far, I have just been throwing everything in the wash as normal, but I don’t want to f up my machine or cause problems. How do I clean this?

ETA my wash cycle:

Normal wash on hot, high spin, heavy duty ‘soil’ level, with a hot pre-wash.

I use a scentless liquid detergent for both the pre-wash and main wash, as well as an Oxi-Clean powder in the drum.

So far this seems to be working well, even with the stickier poop.

Please send help Open leg snaps?

I’m using Nora’s nursery covers is it ok to leave the leg snap undone and just do the waist? When I use the leg snap it’s on the very last outer one and looks like it’s almost pinching it’s so tight and causing red lines along the bikini line if I only snap that leg snap as I’m putting the diaper on they pop open immediately as I’m trying to get the waist snapped. On the waist snaps I’m using second and third to last outer ones and the rise is undone. Toddler is 18m 34.5in tall and about 30lbs. No leaks either way .

Due in January and really want to cloth diaper. I was able to snag a box of free used cloth diapers yesterday. After going through them I’m a bit lost on what is good and what probably is already at the end of its elastic life.

Would using hydrogen peroxide to remove stains hurt natural fibers? I know I can sun, but it's not feasible right now. Looking for alternatives to sunning.

Leaks Struggling with pressure (?) leaks

Hello lovely community. Very much a newbie to cloth diapering, but we decides to give it a go at 8 months as hate our bin full of disposables and also really hope that cloth diapering might help us later when it is time to transition to potty.

So, I managed to get a whole lot of nappies secondhand. We settled on pocket nappies with what appear to be polyester / polyamide inserts (Littles & Bloomz - we are UK based). I did a strip wash for everything as per Nappy Ladies guidance. However I have noticed that we constantly keep getting what I assume are pressure leaks? My baby sits up a lot so feels like moisture seeps out around her legs. I can barely get 1.5hr use out of a nappy and the insert never feels that wet when I change her! This has happened with different inserts (from Bambino Mio) as well!

Is this an issue with the material if the insert / could be from previous owners not washing correctly or do I need to buy new inserts? I do find that the inserts are very wide and definitely bunch a bit between my little ones legs but they all seem the same size so must work for most babies? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I dont want to give up on this! Thank you!

Please send help 8 Month Old Wanting to Feel Dry

Hi all! I was so excited to use cloth nappies when I was pregnant and bought many second hand, and it seems like most I (and my partner, who took serious convincing for cloth) got completely overwhelmed.

I tried cloth at 6 weeks old, failed. 4 months, failed. Now, I desperately want to try again. I feel despair and dread every time I buy new nappies from the shop and I want to use my stash!

The main thing I have noticed from my baby is she hates the feeling of wet, and one little tiddle she is crying uncontrollably so I put her back in a disposable. Can someone please offer advice on how to help this?

I have Little Lamb pockets, Alva Baby pockets, Tots Bots all in ones, and Bambino Mino all in ones. I also have MANY inserts but realizing many are synthetic not natural fabric. I do have quite a few bamboo inserts from Little Lamb. What can I do?

It also seems Little Lamb are the only ones that have a natural fiber in the part that touches the skin?

She is also a heavy wetter but I have noticed her wees getting fewer as she gets older.

Help!! Thank you! ❤️🤞

Leaks Troubleshooting leaks

Hey all!

Ive been cloth diaper for just a couple months now. There was a learning curve but we got the hang of it! I was given a huge preloved supply of pockets and slips which have been great. Im currently saving up to add some prefolds and such to the collection, as LO is getting bigger and needing a bit more absorption.

That said, we are suddenly having ALOT of leaks. Like nearly every diaper. I change them pretty much hourly but even then am not catching all the leaks.

Im wondering if hard water or detergent build up could be the culprit (unsure about my water being hard or not), and if stripping might help?

If so, how often should I strip them, and when/how do I know a slip has reached the end of its life?

I use Essembly cloth diaper washing powder and run 2 loads when I wash them following the instructions on the back, with the second load having an extra rinse cycle as well.

Edit to add: if not detergent build up or hard water, what else might cause sudden leakage?

Recommendations Newborn cloth diapers recommendations - Large Baby

Hello,

We hadn’t planned on using cloth diapers for the newborn phase as we expected a large baby based on our first and figured it wouldn’t be worth it between a large baby and the lovely meconium poops.

However, our little one is already transitioning out of the meconium poops but seems to be having sensitivities to the disposable diapers. So now I’m debating on whether it’s worth spending all that money to try and find a disposable diaper brand that doesn’t irritate his bottom or if I should just spend the money on some newborn cloth diapers?

Intentions are to use LPO pocket diapers once he’s big enough as a friend was kind enough to give us their whole stash.

So I’m thinking from an ease perspective going with newborn pocket diapers makes sense?

Little one was 9 lbs 6 oz and 22 inches at birth. But I don’t think he’s fitting into the LPO cloth diapers we were gifted yet.

Amazon shows the following brands have newborn cloth diapers that could be here overnight:
- alvababy
- babygoal

Our local baby gear store also has LPO newborn diapers in stock (more expensive tho).

Does anyone have experience with these 3 and recommendations on which option we should explore?

Also for those that also had large babies when did you find the one size fits all actually start fitting them?

Recommendations GMD Secondhand

Why do I never or rarely see Green Mountain Diapers for sale secondhand? I mainly use FB marketplace and Vinted. FTM & the only two I have researched enough and liked are GMD and Noras Nursery. I am planning on buying two different "try it" kits from GMD, along with the wet bag and some reusable wipes, but was hoping to find the rest of my stash secondhand! Are there other brands I should be looking out for?

Recommendations Muslin flat troubleshooting

Post image
14 Upvotes

I’ve just done my first week of cloth diapering my 10 week old baby girl! Wanted to check in how I could improve. I’m wanting to do flats and covers for ease of washing and drying, and I enjoy folding the flats so much haha

We have 15 disana muslin flats and I’ve ordered 15 bamboo terry flats that are on their way.
I’ve got 12 wipeable covers (bare and boho), a few wool covers (disana and baby beehinds). I’ve been preferring the wipeable covers to the wool as it’s easier to get off quicker to get her on the potty for EC and are more trim.
I think I’ll use wool more as we come into warmer spring times here in Aus and can use them as her pants

We have done EC since 2 weeks old, offering after every wake up and at nappy changes, we catch lots of wees and nearly every poo in the potty !

I have been doing modified origami and pickman foldswith the Muslin flat, with the extra fabric folded into the front, that’s where her wees go.
I’m finding that she’s really saturated after 1 hour or less, even with pottying/weeing before putting the nappy on. We haven’t had leaks.

Should I be adding extra absorption? I’ve been wanting them to be fairly trim on her and not be super bulky so haven’t been sure what to add
Thanks!!

Recommendations Potty training and laundry

My 2yo is just starting to use the potty, and she's wearing training pants "undies" for most of the day. Somehow this has resulted in more laundry, but fewer diapers.

Talk to me about how you wash pee-only things. I used to toss pee clothes in with the diapers, but now she's using only 2 diapers a day. Do I need to prewash pee stuff, or can it go in with regular clothes for a less-intense laundry cycle? I generally wash my clothes in cold water; would that be enough for pee-soggy pants?

Let's chat Newborn phase to 3 months

Hello! I had my second in July and before the pregnancy amnesia hits, I thought I should make a post with what I did.

TLDR, 8 covers, 24 flats, 9 fitteds made it comfortable to do a main-wash every other day. I'll break it down!

With our first, we started at about 4 weeks with GroVia Hybrids so we needed to get some NB specific stuff since we'd be navigating the cord-stump phase. The meconium was completely cleared out by the time we left the hospital where we used their disposables. This was likely thanks to the fact that baby latched immediately and began cluster feeding right away. Not totally relevant but might be helpful for first timers.

Purchased from Green Mountain Diapers: 24 NB flats 2x Clotheez Wrap size 0 (with the cord dip snap) 3x workhorse fitteds size NB (with cord dip snap) pack of snappis

Purchased from Esembly 6 size 1 diapers 3 covers 2x liners

I managed to pick up a third NB cover (Thirsties) and two more smaller covers (Thirsties size 1 and Kangacare Rumparooz) from a second hand shop. The newborn specific covers were essential in diapering around the healing umbilical cord stump.

We still use all of these diapers and started incorporating the GroVia's as well. The NB specific covers no longer fit but NB flats still somehow fit but don't last long (1-2 hours max). One of the Cloth-eez covers started to show wear along a leg hole seam which is disappointing since these are a specialty item that has a considerably short window of use. I'd hoped to use them all again or pass them along.

The Kangacare and the Thirsties size 1 are awesome overnight. I get a range of 6-10 hours out of one NB flat+a fitted with either cover. I can even sneak in a yellow-edge cloth-eeze doubler.

Now some baby stats since size is a consideration.

Birth weight/height: 6 lbs 14 oz/ 19.7 inches 1 mo checkup: 9 lbs 3.5 oz/21.5 inches It was at about six weeks when she stopped fitting the NB covers 2 mo checkup: 11 lbs 6.5oz/ 23 inches

She'll be 3 months tomorrow and we're starting to age out of the night setup I mentioned, so I've got some Sandy's on the way. I'd previously used Pooters for my first which are absolutely mangled. The inserts and covers are great! I'm using the covers with my night setup and plan to try them out with Sandy's. Please don't hesitate to educate me if you think my hubris will cause me to face plant!!

I'll also mention we're breastfeeding on demand and she sleeps in a bassinet next to me. I keep a diaper caddy on the bed for quick night time changes. After about 6 weeks, we settled into a rhythm where she doesn't poop much if at all overnight. (A real blessing since my first pooped during every feed.) Baby currently eats 1-2 times a night.

A final consideration is that we do a daily pre-wash then main wash when we have a full load. With the fitteds and flats, that meant main wash every other day was necessary so we didn't run out. But now that we have our GroVia stash we main wash on the fourth day. Not sure how many that is but I counted 13 shells in this last load (both GroVia and Esembly) and estimate that was ~30 diapers. I think our GroVia stash had ~36 diapers and we have a couple dozen of those yellow edge cloth-eeze boosters since the GroVia boosters were lackluster.

Hope this helps!

Recommendations How do you store diapers until wash day? How often do you wash?

I’m a complete noob when it comes to cloth diapers but I have a stash of 40. I have a diaper genie but can barely fit 5 diapers in there before I have to try and cram more into the bag.

I’ve seen many people use the Ubbi diaper pails or just an open laundry basket, but I’ve heard reviews about Ubbi not holding in smells and I worry that an open bin would make the house smell like pee.

I plan to only wash 1-2 times a week, but if anyone advises against that please let me know. How can I via my store diapers for a 1-2 wash a week type schedule?
