Content/Multimedia Had a fruit fly infestation at home so I set up traps and tested the efficiency of various baits

Last month I had a serious fruit fly infestation at home so I set up basic DIY traps I found on the internet:

  • Fill a glass or another container with vinger with a drop of dish soap, cover it with a plastic wrap and puncture small holes into it. The fruit flies will get inside but not out and drown in the liquid

Then I decided to use various baits instead of common white vinegar recommended in tutorials. I tried distilled vinegar, wine vinegar, white wine, beer and citrus fruit syrup. I set up the traps and let them be for about 3 weeks.

Beer proved to be the most efficient, with white wine slowly behind. Vinegar seemed to work fine on its own but in presence of alternatives, it wasn't very popular among the fruit flies, with wine vinegar being slightly more efficient than distilled vinegar. I added citrus fruit syrup as well just as an idea (they're called fruit flies after all) but only two flies wandered there.

So in conclusion, this DIY trap works well with beer being the most efficient bait.

Content/Multimedia does my house classify as a hoarder home?

hi everyone, so i’m a bit embarrassed to post these here but i figured screw it because honestly, i’m getting sick of living here.

for context, i’m 21 and have lived in my grandmas house (passed down to my mom after my grandma passed away literally at the beginning of covid) all my life. it’s a small house so that’s why the hallway looks hella narrow 😭

growing up, it used to be somewhat like this before but over the years, the junk grew more and more. i never had friends over at my house but i’ve had family during the holidays where we had a semi clean home ig

i wouldn’t say i grew up in a violent household but everyday from when i was in middle school to high school was a nightmare. basically, my grandma was diagnosed with dementia and became sick, leading her to be put on an oxygen machine. she fought with my mom daily (not physically but verbally), sometimes even at night when i tried to go to sleep at like 3 AM. my mom hired caretakers who would sort of disrespect my house rules by just adding onto our piles of trash and coming home to a complete stranger each day would take a toll on me. i battled depression and was extremely suicidal. i dreaded coming home from school everyday.

because of this, we would both neglect the state of our home just to take care of my grandma and to this day have barely made effort to get it sorted out. these days, both my mom and i work management positions at our jobs so we end up having no time or motivation to clean up. my mom wants to move states within the next year so i’ll have to lock in with all of this clutter. the sooner the better.

any advice or motivation would seriously be appreciated. ❤️‍🩹

Content/Multimedia Honest answer to "how often should I deep clean my house" from someone who does this professionally

5.4k Upvotes

I get asked this constantly, so I figured I'd just write it out.

Most homes genuinely benefit from a professional deep clean twice a year. Spring and fall are the natural rhythm, and here's why those two moments actually make sense:

Spring: You've had your house sealed up all winter. You're removing months of built-up dust, allergens, and grime before the windows open and summer starts. It's a health reset more than anything.

Fall: You're prepping before you close the house up again. You don't want to seal a dirty home into a tight space for another 5 months.

Between those two points, if you're maintaining with regular cleaning, your deep cleans stay manageable. If you're not maintaining, they compound.

The areas that matter most and get skipped most often:

  • Behind the refrigerator and stove (grease buildup + dust creates an actual fire risk in some cases)
  • Bathroom exhaust vents (supposed to pull moisture out, can't do that when clogged)
  • Baseboards (biggest visual impact per minute of cleaning effort)
  • Inside the dishwasher door seal (genuinely alarming what lives in there)

The "do I need to clean before the cleaner comes" question: no. Pick up personal items you want kept somewhere specific. That's it. The rest is the job.

Content/Multimedia How do I clean up milk and eggs that got spilled inside and outside of my car?

Ok so for context: I’m a high school students who is a senior (18M). At my high school we have a day where it is juniors vs seniors and the two sides egg each other. So me and my boys were driving around and someone pours a whole carton of milk through the sun roof. Along with that, the whole car is covered with eggs inside and out. I have attached some pictures above. My question is this: How do I clean all of this? I didn’t know where to post it, so I just posted it here.

P.S. I know the context isn’t really necessary, but I think it’s a kind of funny.

Content/Multimedia Things in my house are being stained black

I moved to a new place a few days ago, and in the process of unpacking we've noticed that something in the house is dyeing our feet black. The house has some vinyl flooring, which I've already mopped in an attempt to clean whatever was making our feet dirty, but I suspect the culprit is the new carpeting the landlord just installed, because the cat is also being dyed black. Has anyone heard of this happening? Any tips how I can clean out a carpet thar seems to be either leeching out its dye or somehow very dirty? The second picture is my hand after petting the poor cat, I'm definitely going to have to give her a bath later...

Content/Multimedia Pro cleaner tip: how to make your own Dawn Platinum Powerwash refill

1.9k Upvotes

I run a small cleaning company in Orlando and we go through a lot of Dawn Powerwash every week. Instead of constantly buying new bottles, we usually just refill them.

If you already have the spray bottle, this DIY mix works really well.

DIY Dawn Platinum Powerwash Refill

Ingredients:

✧ 2 tablespoons Dawn Platinum dish soap

✧ 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol (70% or higher)

✧ warm water

Fill the rest of the bottle with warm water and gently swirl to mix.

The alcohol helps break down grease and makes the spray dry faster without leaving streaks.

We use this mix constantly for things like:

✧ stovetops

✧ kitchen counters

✧ sinks

✧ grease on cabinets

✧ bathroom surfaces

✧ shower buildup

Pro tip:

Spray it and let it sit for about 30-60 seconds before wiping. Most people spray and wipe immediately, but giving it a little time helps break down grease and soap scum.

Just figured I’d share since those Powerwash refills get expensive

We’ve only had this double ottoman bed for just over a month, but my girlfriend found this under the bed. It just seems to be on her side of the bed but it’s over the slats and the mattress. Is this mould? If it is, what should we do about it?

Wife bought this pair for $40 from a flea market. After trying a lot with regular brass cleaners, I somehow stumbled upon barkeepers friend and it just made the things so easy, it required very minimal effort. My relatives back in India are a fan of brass collectibles, and I have since gifted this magic to them. They all love it too.

Hi, back in 2008 I lost my 4 month old. The funeral home put together a fabric memory box, which included an imprint of his foot. Somehow the box has started to mold, and it looks like it's on the foot imprint. Is there anyway I can clean and salvage it? I don't need the box, I'd just really like to keep the foot imprint.
