Let's talk about AI-assisted software submissions

• Upvotes

As you are probably aware, this sub bans AI-generated music. However, we do not have a policy on AI-assisted software/tools, including "vibe-coded" software.

There is every possibility someone with little to no coding experience could have a fantastic idea and show up with an amazing program that streamlines some aspect of chiptune composition or recording, or gives access to an obscure sound chip. There are a lot of promising possibilities there.

AI-assistance is also increasingly standard practice in the software industry. There's no escaping it. Trying to ban it altogether seems like a losing battle.

However, the problem is that it is now *so* easy to have AI create software that we are seeing submissions at an increasing rate. This sub has gone from seeing maybe one or two new pieces of chiptune software *a month* to seeing multiple submissions a day sometimes. I think we're up to 5 this week (and it's Wednesday at the time of writing lol).

The issue, as I see it, is not necessarily AI, but one of a signal-to-noise ratio. I'm sure some of the stuff submitted in the past month or two has been fine projects, but some of it is junk created on a whim destined to be abandoned by the creator a week after they post it. Those posts do nothing to help the chiptune community and only serve to clog the sub and bury potentially good projects.

We have rules in place to try and help improve discussion and try and tamp down on low-effort posts, and we need to extend those to include software submissions. I have added a new rule to the sidebar:

We welcome new chiptune software, including AI-assisted projects, but submissions should explain what the tool does, what makes it useful or interesting, and why it might be relevant to the community. Projects that offer little beyond functionality already available in established tools, or that appear minimally tested or poorly developed, may be removed as low-effort submissions.

I personally do not have any sort of background in coding or software development, and the mod team does not have time to do a deep dive on every software submission to evaluate the quality of the project. Rather, we will be looking at the posts themselves. If a post says something like "I made this with Claude because it seemed cool," we're going to remove it. Posts need to explain why the project exists, why the community might be interested in it, how it is useful, etc. Sharing something you created on a whim is of interest to no one, so keep it to yourself.

We are going to be asking ourselves questions like these when evaluating a submission:

  1. Is it clearly relevant to chiptune?
  2. Does the post explain a meaningful use, feature, experiment, or reason for existing?
  3. Does the submission give people enough information to understand why they might want to try or discuss it?

If you feel a post doesn't live up to these standards, please use the report button!

And if these posts become more frequent, we might want to add another mod with software development expertise just to help police them.

MUSIC Floating Lands - Magic Dragon Fantasy: Story Soundtrack

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone,
I'm wanting to showcase a tune from the soundtrack of my new game Magic Dragon Fantasy: Story.
The soundtrack just went live on Steam and is available to download and listen to now!
I've used Reaper Media for my DAW and I use Tweakbench Triforce VST for the soundfont.
It's a rather simple soundtrack by design, everything is 120bpm and follows a strict measure rule so that other sounds in the game (item unlock, hurt warning) sound at the same pace and match in rhythm.
I've took my time and worked hard to assemble this collection for the atmosphere of the game, I feel it is very fitting and definitely matches the vibe, and I had fun composing it.
Check it out and let me know what you think!
Enjoy!

RESOURCE FM Sequencer for Genesis - MDSQ

I made an FM sequencer for Genesis using Claude. I'm not a musician and can't code, but always liked Yamaha FM synths and the Genesis uses the same sound chip... so I got curious if I could make something approachable and fun to play, with the ability to live edit per-step. See the readme for controls.

AI Assisted/Generated Tracker for Web w/ Claude

I used Claude to build chiptrackr, a tracker that runs in the browser: https://chiptrackr.com/

It loads and saves XM and MOD (plus S3M/IT import), and playback is checked against libopenmpt in CI. There’s also a Jam mode for making music together live, WAV/MP3/video export, and it works on the phone.

It’s fully open source under MIT, so do whatever you want with it :)

Feedback on playback accuracy is very welcome, and also whether it works as expected in your browser.
Mainly I was interested in how far Claude could be used for a task like this, and how to reach good test coverage with it.

MUSIC I've been running this 24/7 stream that has procedurally generated (not AI) chiptune stuff

So, a while back, I was contracted to make a dynamic music system for a game that ended up getting cancelled. By dynamic music system I mean one of those things where the music, say, might get more intense automatically when you're in combat, etc. So what I ended up doing was writing this whole thing that uses emulated YMF262, Pokey, SID, and a couple others in an ensemble to generate infinitely varied music based on figures, harmonic and variation rules, etc. that I programmed in. I have been running it on this 24/7 stream at https://www.youtube.com/live/sPtOkrvGgTU where it is just live-synthesizing stuff all the time.

Sometimes it gets in a really, really catchy groove for a minute... and other times you get total stinkers. I think it's pretty fun though. Check it out and tell me what you think!

RESOURCE I'm addicted to SID music, so I made Fentwave — a C64 synth you can try in your browser

I love the sound of the SID chip, and this is where that obsession has taken me so far.

I've been making Fentwave, a synth for the Commodore 64. It runs on a real C64, with 64 factory presets, MIDI Learn, and patch saving/loading. I also put an emulator on the website so you can have a play without needing the hardware:

https://y2kcrisis.com/fentwave

This is the tape-loader demo. I got a little carried away giving the loading screen its own moment too.

I'm also working on a MIDI cartridge and case. Those are still designs in progress.

Figured some people here might enjoy messing with it. Would love to hear what you make with it, or what you'd want from a C64 synth.

QUESTION What Is The Best Tracker For Making Chiptune?

Just barely getting started, haven't even used a DAW let alone a tracker before, and just wanted to know more about the options. I've looked into trackers and it seems that the currently updated ones are:

  • MilkyTracker
  • SchismTracker
  • Dn-Famitracker
  • Furnace Tracker
  • OpenMPT
  • Qtractor
  • Renoise (pay to use)

Prototracker can be an honorable mention but it looks more niche than I might like but feel free to convince me otherwise.

There's obviously more but these are the ones I've seen when searching around on AlternativeTo and elsewhere.

I'm using Linux but I can get stuff like Dn-Famitracker working if I need to with WINE.

Would like some advice on this if anyone is willing to share.

P.S. A subreddit wiki of resources such as tools to make and places to share or find would be nice.

MUSIC Glitch Music with lsdj

Was messing around with making glitch music using LSDJ on the Game Boy and feel like I got some interesting results. I don't think I've really seen too many examples online of folks using LSDJ in more experimental ways so I figured why not try it out some.

(added 909 kick in Ableton afterwards)

QUESTION Can anyone identify the game this track is from?

I wanna say it's an 80s, possibly 90s NES game by a Japanese developer, but I've completely forgotten which because I've never actually played it.

I tried my best to replay the melody, but the tempo is not right.

MUSIC I made a 10-track retro game music pack for indie developers

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a small indie game music pack called "Pixel Quest - Retro Game Music Pack", featuring 10 original tracks inspired by classic retro/16-bit games.

The pack includes music for different situations, such as:

  • Main menu
  • Exploration and adventure
  • Forests and dungeons
  • Regular battles and boss fights
  • Chase / danger
  • Shops and safe areas
  • Victory and game over

The tracks are around 1–1.5 minutes long and are designed to fit different moments in a game.

I'm a small creator trying to get my work out there, so I'd really appreciate it if any indie developers here gave it a listen. I'd also love feedback on the music and whether you think it would fit your projects.

You can check it out here: https://wnannestad.itch.io/pixelquest

Thanks for checking it out!

Well hello there! I made this back in 2019 based on a song from the year before, which I will link below. I must confess this is not a TRUE chiptune as some of my other work is--this touched FL Studio briefly--but I think you will still enjoy.

This the chiptune remix, as I said. Here is the original: https://youtu.be/KsIyh6UXcuE?is=U9-z5HrPsOunzE1a

Part II of a II part EP project.

I've been making these for many years. Inspired by my childhood gaming memories mixed with my current musical tastes. So not exactly pure chip music, but heavily incorporated by it. It's quite a ride, and it's by no means for everyone. But... It might be just for you. Sharing because of the lack of audience for this type of music.
