Structural Failure Strömsundsbron on E45 in Sweden collapsed while a large transformer was being transported across it - 2026-10-01
Happened Thursday last week. The truck is still stuck.
The bridge was rated for 74 tons (per vehicle), but was given special permission crossing the bridge with centric driving, even though the total weight was about 100 tons. They had already cross 79 other bridges with the exact same weight rating.
The bridge was recently under maintenance, but apparently the bearing(s) that broke wasn't included in this operation.
Edit: specify limit was per vehicle

Equipment Failure On March 12th, 1857, a train outside Hamilton, West Canada derailed, sending the engine and several passenger cars falling 60 feet onto the frozen canal below before the ice broke. The Desjardins Canal disaster left 59 dead and 18 injured.
The canal is located just outside what is now Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. In 1857, ten years before Confederation, Ontario was known as Canada West, when Canada was a British colony known as the Province of Canada.
The train was heading from Toronto to Hamilton and was passing over the Desjardins canal when it derailed. The engine's front axle broke, throwing the engine off the tracks, gouging apart the wooden ties before the engine smashed through the wooden structure of the bridges and fell onto the frozen creek below, with one passenger car leaning almost vertically against the stone wall. Moments later, the ice broke and the wrecked train sank into the freezing water. Of 90 onboard the train, 59 were killed and 18 were injured. Almost 170 years year, it still remains one of Canada's worst rail accidents.

Fatalities SS Marine Electric sinking — 12 February 1983
On 12 February 1983, the SS Marine Electric capsized about 30 nautical miles east of Chincoteague in a winter storm. In its last two years, the ship had more than 400 doublers and patches on its hatch covers; parts of a panel removed in 1982 were described as “paper thin.” The Marine Board found progressive flooding through wasted hatch and deck plating. The NTSB found flooding from an undetermined structural failure and thought the covers were probably weathertight when the ship sailed. Of 34 crew members, three survived.
I made this 15-minute, source-cited documentary. The narration is AI-generated.

Fire/Explosion Today Switzerland (Neuchâtel) around 12 - 1pm
A floor imploded around 12 to 1 p.m., leaving several people injured, at least one of whom was taken to the emergency room. It was probably a gas explosion that blew out from the inside, and the building was still inhabited even though part of it had been under renovation for several months.
