Questions What’s a dead give away you grew up poor?

2.6k Upvotes

I was having a conversation with a friend and mentioned when a bar of soap gets really thin I’ve always just stuck it to the new bar and let it dry to get full use out of it. He told me that was my dead giveaway.

Questions Anyone else intentionally mispronounce things for your own amusement?

1.2k Upvotes

For example: Chipotle. I pronounce it CHUH-pot-tee, because the first time I had a burrito there, it gave me food poisoning! And for some reason, people get so worked up and always correct me! 😄

Any weirdos like me? What words are your favs to mispronounce?

Questions Are there character traits that are broadly considered American, especially by non-Americans?

1.8k Upvotes

I had a friend from another country recently say “that’s very American of you” to me in a situation and it made me think about this question.

Questions To those who are often told they look younger than your actual age, what’s your secret?

1.1k Upvotes

I just turned 34 a few days ago and whenever I meet new people (mostly at work) the age topic never fails to be brought up. Most people think i’m around 21-25, and whenever I reveal my true age, they’re often surprised and immediately ask what I do. I always tell them: I don’t have kids, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, eat relatively healthy and exercise.

Edit: definitely didn’t expect this many responses, but have been enjoying reading them! It seems the general consensus is: genetics, not having kids, staying out of the sun/using sunblock, intaking plenty of water and exercise.

Questions Do you brush your teeth twice a day? No judgement.

4.8k Upvotes

Mental health issues excluded- do you brush your teeth two times a day? I was talking with my coworkers about this and all three people I asked said they only brush once. One person said he brushes at night and uses mouthwash in the morning. Two said they only brush in the morning. I try to brush every morning and night but maybe 2 times a month I fall asleep and miss a night. I take meds every night though, so the actions usually coincide.

Do you brush morning and night?

Questions Does anyone else’s family have 'home clothes,' or is it just us?

10.5k Upvotes

Are we the only weird family that does this, or is it a universal thing?

At home, we look... well, "homeless chic" is the vibe. We call it "home clothes." It’s basically my dad’s old shirts that are one step away from disintegrating—stained, torn, ridiculously oversized, but somehow the most comfortable things in existence.

Had a rough day? Get home, slap on some home clothes, and boom—instant therapy. BUT, when people come over or stay the night, we have to scramble to look like we’re not living in a sitcom about struggling artists. As soon as they leave? Right back into the post-apocalyptic wardrobe.

To be clear, they're clean (ish). The stains are from noble pursuits like painting, hair dyeing, or accidentally wielding spaghetti sauce like it’s a Jackson Pollock piece.

Anyone else have "home clothes," or is my family just running a secret cult of comfort?

Questions What's the "Don't trust a skinny chef" of your job or industry?

2.1k Upvotes

For those who don't know, "Never trust a skinny chef" is an old adage that implies a skinny chef can't be too good of a cook if they don't like to eat what they make. It's not to be taken literally, just as a warning not to rely on someone who claims to specialize in a job but shows certain signs that they might not be too good at it.

For me, it would be someone who manages financial accounts for a client but doesn't know how to set up or manage their own home budget.

Edit: You can apply this to hobbies too!

Questions How does everyone seem to know what writing is generated by AI?

2.2k Upvotes

I keep seeing people mention on read it posts "this comment is AI" or "this post is AI", so decided to generate one using AI. The prompt I used was "generate a small story about something positive and unexpected that happened to a person, from a first person view"

The story generated was:

I left the house already having a bad day. I missed the bus, spilled coffee on my sleeve, and felt like everything was slightly off. On my walk to school, I stopped at a small park to calm down, mostly just to breathe for a minute.

That’s when I noticed an older man struggling to pick up a box of books that had spilled onto the path. I helped him gather them, and we started talking while we stacked them back up. He told me the books were donations for a tiny neighborhood library he was trying to rebuild after a storm. Before I left, he handed me one of the books and said, “This one looks like it belongs with you.”

I didn’t expect that small moment to change my whole day, but it did. I walked away lighter, smiling for no clear reason, holding a book I didn’t know I needed. Everything else still wasn’t perfect—but it felt okay again, and that surprised me the most.

If I saw the above, I honestly wouldn't have picked up that it was AI, so I have no idea how everyone else seems to immediately know what is and isn't an AI generated post

1.6k Upvotes

I just saw a tiktok about someone who almost died at work because someone used the person's fork to eat satay that belonged to someone else which contained peanuts and the other person started eating their spaghetti with the same fork and ended up having an allergic reaction from the leftover peanut residue on the same fork.

EDIT: I AM SO GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE COMMENTS YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA THE TERRIBLE DAY I HAD YESTERDAY. THESE COMMENTS BROUGHT JOY TO MY LIFE

Questions I believe most people who claim to hate pineapple on pizza haven't tried it.

1.4k Upvotes

I genuinely doubt, whether these people who claim to hate pineapple on pizza have even tried it in the first place?? I have an aunt who makes homemade pizzas and long before this was a topic on social media, she has been adding cut pineapple pieces on pizza occasionally for the colour and decor. I never had any problem with it until I started noticing how many are against it. Infact, I asked a friend of mine, whether she had it that way before and she replied she hadn't - it was just the idea that made her feel that way. So again back to my statement.

Edit: Since some of you commented whether I like eating shit/have I tried it (shit)...let me clarify something. My opinion is based on actual people who claim it to be bad w/o trying. You don't like it, that's fair - as long as you don't go badmouthing it. Such people shouldn't even be commenting in the first place or join forces with those who tried it and then hated it.

Edit: I come from Kerala, India and we have a dish called "Pineapple Pachadi" - Google it and maybe try making it. This is for those who haven't eaten "cooked" pineapple. It is simply out of the world 🤌

Questions Can anyone actually tie a cherry stem with their tongue?

I'm just watching the Lizzie Borden story on Netflix and I had to run to reddit to ask. Is this a real thing? I recall growing up and it being a common thing that if you could you were a good kisser, apparently. I've tried it and am baffled as to how anyone ever could and so always assumed it was a silly little myth. Now I'm wondering, can any of you actually do that? I cannot figure out how on earth that can happen, but then again I can't do much with my hands either and may have just outed myself as a terrible kisser.

Questions What small tradition has your family carried into adulthood?

1.6k Upvotes

When my daughter was six or seven, she complained that everyone else in the family got to go for ice cream on their birthdays. Her siblings were born in April and September, both good ice cream stand months in Michigan, while her birthday was January 10, and local stands were closed.

I told her that if she remembered her half birthday on July 10, the entire family would go out for ice cream. The catch was that she had to remember it herself. She did, and that one little promise became a family tradition. If you, the half-birthday person remember it’s your half birthday, the entire family goes for ice cream.

More than 20 years later, she is now 30, and we still celebrate. This morning, July 10, she texted the family to announce that it is her half birthday, and everyone is officially free to go get ice cream. My kids are all adults, and this is a source of joy to all of us-a random family text, insisting we get ice cream! Every family member, including spouses, now do the same on their own half birthdays.

The tradition has even spread beyond our family. One of her friends adopted it with her family, and today that friend had a baby on my daughter’s half birthday.
It is such a simple thing, but it has grown with us from childhood into adulthood. The best part is still the same: remembering your half birthday is surprisingly difficult, so when someone remembers, it feels like everyone has earned the ice cream.

Questions Is it weird for a sister and brother to hold hands?

2.5k Upvotes

I am 18 years old, and my little brother is 11. We were meeting my friend to watch the new zootopia movie, and she later told me how it was a little weird how we were holding hands walking in. I don't know, maybe its because we've been doing it since he was like a baby it feels so natural to me. At what age does it become weird?

Edit: I’m glad most people see it as pretty normal! I only have a few months until I leave for college, and I’m sure he won’t want to hold hands after that lol. I’ll make sure to hang out with him a lot before then! I do understand where my friend is coming from though, since she’s an only child and grew up pretty independently. Thank you all for the comments!

Questions Older people using newer slang or phrases, your favorite newer word?

Just an open-ended discussion.

My Grandma was born somewhere between 1900 and 1910. At some point, people started saying "See ya" as a casual good-bye. (I have no idea when.) She couldn't bring herself to say it, but would buck up and say, "We shall see you later," and would grin at her own audacity at being so "with it". Always that exact way. It was the cutest thing ever. I say it sometimes to my son as sort of a family joke.

I myself never picked up new slang, new terms, new ways of speaking easily. I had to consciously make myself say "fridge" instead of refrigerator, as an example. But certain things that came up well into my adulthood tickled me and I picked it up.

  • "jacked up" - love this phrase
  • "disrespected" - there were complaints maybe ~20 years ago that this wasn't a word. But it was a new word that filled a gap in the language and I like it.
  • OG - just called someone who left a community group I'm in "the OG" since she was the first member under the instructor, and most of the people there (all 45+ years old) were asking what I meant and there was a little lively light-hearted discussion about it. I was proud because I think I used it correctly. Apparently this is really not all that new. The oldest person there is 70 and she said it's been around at least 20 years.

I'd love to hear any stories related to this from yourself, friends, or family. Any cute anecdotes or newer phrases/words that you really love (or hate). I love when new phrases and words crop up to fill gaps. (I don't particularly like when an existing word changes meaning, and introduces a new gap because there is no other word to use for the older meaning, but that's a separate discussion.)

Questions Why do people say “on accident” now?

This has been driving me nuts for years lol. I keep seeing/hearing people say things like “I did this on accident.”

At first I thought it was just something the younger generations are saying…for some reason. But I’ve noticed my fellow millennials saying it as well.

Am I crazy or did we used to say “by accident?” As in- “it happened by accident.”

When did everyone decide to start saying “on?” And why?

Questions Would you refer to 4:00 p.m. as the afternoon?

My brother does. He'll say, "Yeah, we can go tomorrow afternoon. How's 4:00 p.m. sound?"

I get it that "afternoon" is referring to time "after noon" (12:00 p.m.), but when it gets to be around 4:00 p.m., I think of that as early evening.

When I'm sending work emails, it's "Good morning" until noon on the dot and "Good afternoon" until probably 3, 3:30-ish. I would never say it after 4:00 p.m. I know it's not a big deal, but I think it's misleading!

What about you?

Questions Do kids parents let them miss school just because?

I saw a social media post about this and I thought back on when I was in school, my parents never let me miss a day of school unless I was running a fever. I read some of the comments and many people were talking about how their parents allowed them to miss school to just have a day off… in my family, that wasn’t even an option. If we felt bad the morning of, we went to school… and if we still felt bad we went to the school nurse. If we didn’t want to go to school that day then we had to suck it up.

I was K-12 from 2008-2021 if that’s important

Questions Is it just me, or does maintaining the human body daily feel like too much effort?

2.0k Upvotes

I don't know if other people have this issue, but please hear me out.

We have to eat EVERY SINGLE DAY and it's so annoying. You have to get up from whatever fun thing you're doing, take the food out of the fridge, put the food on the plate, heat up the food, then take it to a table. So many steps for something so frequent.

Its the same thing with showering, using the bathroom, brushing your teeth, etc. These things are such a waste of time and mental focus, yet we have to do them. They're basically constant daily interruptions that occur during your entire life.

Questions Be honest: What is your opinion on "Disney Adults"?

So, I am autistic. Disney theme parks and movies have long been a huge special interest of mine. But I've been hearing and seeing so much negativity about "Disney Adults". For example, I lost at least a couple of friends when they found out my interests, thinking it was "gross" and I needed to grow up. A lot of people also agree with them. Also, I've seen "Disney Adult" as an insult a lot, and am always recommended stuff on Youtube or wherever else online painting them as horrible people. And it's from people from all different ideologies and whatnot that parrot similar stuff.

I usually try to hide my interests anyway, but with Disney I feel I have to even more. I don't wear anything Disney going out (my Loungeflys are for display only, thank you 🫩), I don't go to Disneyland, and I skipped out on an invite to the official fan convention this year. Some say it's too extreme, that it would be normal for someone in my area (I live about an hour from the park) but ehh, at least I don't fall into the stereotype.

And this isn't just an internet thing, like I said I've heard about it to, losing some friends, being called things and all. I'm usually pretty good at distiguinshing real life and the internet. For example there's this one game that I am beyond excited for coming out next month. The internet mostly dislikes the series, but the few times I mention it outside the internet, people are just like "oh cool". So I know that it's mostly okay to openly talk about.

But this interest is just.... a mystery I guess. I did some polls on here, while many say they lose respect for "Disney Adults", they also would not stop being friends with someone for it, nor would they mostly look down if they attended the fan convention.

I very much prefer brutal honesty, so please don't hold back, I am not asking for sympathy here. I am simply just an autistic girl trying to figure out what's acceptable (and what's not) in our society.

ETA: Guys, I literally asked for brutal honesty, not that "just be yourself lol" toxic positivity bull. 🫩

Questions Do yall think "mild" means not spicy or slightly spicy?

My friend and I just got into a mini-argument over this. He thought it meant not spicy and was mad when he ordered food mild and it was still a little spicy. I told him he should've asked for no spice if he didn't want any spice at all. And then he told me mild and no spice were the same. We asked our other friends and they were pretty 50/50. What do yall think?

Questions Have you ever met someone who had what people call “The Monroe effect”

1.5k Upvotes

The “Marilyn Monroe effect” usually refers to that hard-to-define magnetic charisma someone can have the kind where they naturally draw attention without necessarily trying. It’s not just about physical appearance it can come from presence, confidence, facial expressions, voice, mannerisms, vulnerability, and the way someone makes people feel when they’re around them.
have you ever met someone who just has that factor? Like you can’t even fully explain what makes them stand out, but somehow your eyes keep going back to them. They don’t necessarily have to be the loudest or most conventionally attractive person in the room; there’s just something about them that makes them memorable.

(Edit: i forgot to add the part where the “effect” includes being able to turn it off and on. I genuinely thought that everyone or mostly everyone knew or is familiar of this phenomenon.)

Questions Without drugs or alcohol, what is your favorite way to escape from reality?

I personally love life, but ... not all the time. Sometimes when it gets overwhelming, I feel like I need a good reset.

My personal favorite way is to walk along a beach, listening to the waves rolling in and out, but honestly any body of water will do it for me.

If I don't have that, then going on a long hike in the woods, leaves me feeling refreshed.

I have horses and donkeys, so just sitting out with them, is a great escape for me.

What about y'all? What do y'all love to do when you just need to escape and reset?
