Welcome to reddit, where acepting and helping trans people is equivalent to rejecting and harrasing trans people
God damn centrists

u/CalifanoCation Jun 29 '20
What even is the justification for them banning cth? The only thing I could really see is that before quarantine people would ping users and brigade other subs. Otherwise the only “hateful” content that was posted was usually in reaction to terrible people/groups
22
u/BespokeBellyLint Jun 29 '20
Calling out atrocities is the the same as committing them to the admins of reddit.
22
Jun 29 '20
Let’s not be disingenuous here; people on CTH would regularly call for specific people to be guillotined/walled/whatever. I definitely don’t agree with Reddit’s stance on violence, hypocritical and liberal as it is, but they weren’t just calling out the violence of capitalists.

u/BeLucker Jun 29 '20
Also there was a fuckton of holodomor denial & tankie shit over there, I literally got banned for saying that we shouldn't support north korea. I liked CTH quite a bit cause it had good memes, but let's not pretend there aren't reasons to ban it. The mods propably just did it so they could "both sides" this shit tho, and saying that CTH is even close to be as bad as T_D or GC is bullshit

Jun 29 '20
I imagine for publicity reasons. If they banned a bunch of hateful right wing subs then the right would throw a tantrum, so they needed to even it out so they seem neutral.

u/aguyataplace Jun 29 '20
I think they got in trouble a couple years back for defending the very violent and extremely bad work done by John Brown in his mission to abolish slavery in the United States, and saying to my continued horror something along the lines of "Killing slavers is good."

You can get in on the action on AHS, they have a post over there regarding the ban wave and a lot of it is about CTH. The reasoning seems to boil down to "CTH was bad because I say so/horseshoe theory", posting a link to a list of like 10 example of bad behavior from what was one of the largest subs or all that tankie shit a portion of the users got up to.

Mods were getting left on read constantly about all types of shit. The recent banning wave where you get no notice of what or why was really hitting there

CTH kinda devolved into a tankie cesspit at the end of its life cycle, sadly. Lots of apologia and "jokes" about gulags/"getting the wall", that kinda thing. TBH I'm not too sad to see it gone
18
u/noff01 Jun 29 '20
I agree with this. I'm not happy when subs get banned, but that place was actually pretty toxic.
8
u/dick_me_daddy_oWo Jun 29 '20
I definitely saw a lot of tankies, especially in r/cth2. I'm still sad to see the sub get banned. It was great for radicalization, and I'd rather deal with a few tankies than anyone from r/conservative.

I was lurking there daily and have never seen what you're talking about.
1
u/cyvaris Jun 29 '20
Same. In all honesty it really got better over the last year or so as the edgy humor dropped off.
23
Jun 29 '20
If anything happens to this sub, it was nice knowing you guys 😔 Maybe we'll all meet again someday

u/Baridian Jun 29 '20
If this sub gets banned after, as far as I know, 0 run ins with administration, I'd be very surprised.

u/HillInTheDistance Jun 29 '20
That was my favourite sub for being generally outraged at the world and posting nihilistic puns. I'm honestly kinda sad, not gonna lie.
2
u/Superbluebop Jun 29 '20
Same lol
1
u/politicalanalysis Jun 29 '20
Yeah, I likely wouldn’t have been radicalized without the shitposting humor of chapo. At least we still have LSC for radicalizing libs (maybe, I haven’t been on that sub for a while, is it still posting memes about capitalists being shitty?)
1
u/cyvaris Jun 29 '20
It was a decent "live" lefty news source too. Shame to see that go, especially without anything similar to take its place.

CTH stopped breaking the rules when they got quarantined and still got taken out in the banwave.
11
Jun 29 '20
yup, the mods even tried to work with the admins to better learn what kind of comments and posts were breaking the rules, but they were just ghosted
16
u/MelanieAntiqua Jun 29 '20
The admins realized that all the toxic, bigoted subreddits were damaging Reddit's image and knew they had to get rid of them. However, all those subs were right-wing and the admins, being libs, cared more about not appearing "biased" than actually doing the right thing. So, they had to get rid of a left-wing subreddit as well. Even if that subreddit didn't do anything wrong.
5
u/cryptidkelp Jun 29 '20
It didn't work though. All the comments on that post are shit like "so killing white people is okay?"
6
u/Crime-Stoppers Jun 29 '20
yeah I noticed that effort to abide by the rules when I joined after their quarantine. Really sad that people who genuinely tried to fix their misdoings just got screwed over
7
u/Anteater42 Jun 29 '20
It's also important to remember that their misdoings were saying slaveowners should die
3
u/ResetDharma Jun 29 '20
I got spammed a dozen times a day for the last month with Reddit's 'you upvoted bad content' message, with no explanation. I assume it was shit like "we should [parody] racists in Minecraft. " But this is the site that was all radical free speech when it was explicit racism, jailbait, and revenge porn they were defending.

u/noff01 Jun 29 '20
I saw rule breaking content regularly over there. "Gulag/gillotine" jokes and the like are still rule breaking content, so regardless if those jokes were for the best, they are still against the rules (not like I hold them sacred or anything, but it was still only a matter of time).
1
u/politicalanalysis Jun 29 '20
Really probably only a matter of time for us over here to tbh.
2
u/noff01 Jun 29 '20
Nah, I doubt it. This subs is much more civil in comparison.
2
u/politicalanalysis Jun 29 '20
There’s definitely less shitposting that’s for sure. I still see some “parody in Minecraft slaveowners.” Stuff from time to time here, which is ostensibly why chapo was banned.
6
u/Mscxyn Jun 29 '20
Gendercritical got banned, and I used to frequent CTH but I gotta say I'll take that exchange any day.

u/Timirald Jun 29 '20
I personally think that trading CTH was worth it for keeping the general appearance of balance so many reddit centrists will demand after all of those fash and right wing subs were banned.
People from CTH lurking about here, I welcome you с хлебом и солью.
2
u/tuna012 Jun 29 '20 edited Jun 29 '20
Probably so, CTH lost recruitment potential after the quarantine and was doomed from that moment. Getting GC banned really was satisfying through. It still kinda hurts the "both sides" narrative is being pushed hard rn tho
Imo we should just go in damage-control mode to make cover for non-doomed but still at-risk subs like r/SocialistRA or others (MTC, MMTC and SendInTheTanks are no doubt doomed imo, only a matter of time they're banned together w/ other terf subs like itsafetish)

3
u/RAYTHEON_PR_TEAM Jun 29 '20
Let’s take another moment to remember the most popular sub on this dumpster of a site was r/jailbait.
4
u/aguyataplace Jun 29 '20
Really surprised that they banned CTH before banning FC. At least CTH was cool
3
3
u/Bookworm_AF Jun 29 '20
I mean, FC is cool for the first 5 minutes before you figure out it isn't entirely ironic.
1
u/politicalanalysis Jun 29 '20
I don’t know how anyone stays unbanned from there. The mods on FC are some of the strictest I’ve ever seen and they do not give a FUCK if you are new to Marxism and are exploring different left ideologies. You basically have to be 100% on board from the get go or you’re out.
1
u/Doonvoat Jun 29 '20
I think that's mainly because unlike CTH quarantining FC actually did a lot to lower its activity
1
u/Poptartlivesmatter Jun 29 '20
Chapo refugee here, it was very sad seeing this go plus they got r/chapotraphouse2 as well

They did hate slave owners, so I guess it isn’t wrong to label them a hate sub.

u/DisembarkEmbargo Jun 29 '20
This was true for the Chapo I knew a few months ago. Whenever a trans person posted about protesting or voting or something everyone was supportive. That sub was becoming shitty. It was definitely time for it to go.

RIP to Reddit. This is a sad day. None of the subs I frequent were banned but they will all now be on the edge of the new acceptability.
I am no watermelon, this is an attack on our politics too.

fuck that was my favorite subreddit
where do us libs go now? i mean i like this subreddit but chapo had the best memes and discussion, where tf do i find that now? is there an alternative?

I mean, they did ban gendercritical which was a solid move, this ban was just the beginning of their implementation of the new rules.

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '20
As a cth refugee, what subs do you recommend to fill the void?
