I’m very active (run 4x a week, lift 4x a week, training for a half marathon, walk everywhere) but my diet, especially how much I ate out, 1-2 beers or glasses of wine a day, and binging on snacks at night was keeping me obese. My weight was holding back my running progress and I just felt uncomfortable all the time, so I vowed to myself to weigh myself every morning to hold myself accountable (and not beat myself up if the scale went up) and track everything I eat in the LoseIt app, even if I go over. I have lost weight in the past but with a very aggressive goal, so I decided to go less aggressive and lose about 1 pound a week so that I could eat more and feel more satisfied. There were tough periods- in August I had a wedding, family visiting, my birthday, and a beach vacation, which is why the scale went up and down a lot- but I would get right back on track the next day. I made a rule that I would only go out to eat with friends, not by myself, would only have alcohol once a week and limit to a single drink, and would not order DoorDash. I typically eat 1700-1800 calories a day, and 2,500 or so on Saturday’s when I do my long run in order to stay fueled and prevent injury.
Honestly, the results have been awesome. I’ve lost over 20 pounds (over 9 kg), and have dropped 5 inches each from my chest, waist, and hips. My clothes fit so much more comfortably and I feel so much more comfortable just existing. It’s paying off in my running journey too- I ran my fastest 5k and 10k in 3 years. I’ve dropped almost 4 minutes from my 10k time from 2 years ago. My resting heart rate has dropped from the mid-50s to the mid-40s. Because I’ve kept up with weight training I have not lost much muscle, either. The loss has not been linear, and there’s been lots of ups and downs, which would have discouraged me a lot in the past, but seeing the overall trend going down as well as the non-scale victories has kept me going. November and December will be challenging with the Holidays, but I just plan to roll with it, track my food, and get back on track the next day and trust the process. I still have about 40 pounds to go before I hit my GW.
For those who are discouraged by seeing the scale constantly going up and down- don’t sweat it! Focus on the long term trend. I would also highly recommend measuring yourself each month, because sometimes the inches come off even when the scale isn’t moving, as well as listing some non-scale victories each month.
