Why do I feel like Bulgarian Reddit is so disconnected from Bulgaria?
I live in Sofia as a medical student being from Ireland and Pakistan and I have never once in my 6 years have any form of racism or prejudice. I’ve found Bulgarians to be very helpful and warm at all times towards me. Yet this Reddit gives the impression that Bulgaria is the most far right xenophobic country

PRESS RELEASE Coordinated Mass Suspension of Government-Critical and Pro-Ukraine Pages Raises Questions as Rumen Radev's Political Camp Pursues Both Parliamentary and Presidential Power Ahead of Bulgaria's Presidential Election URGENT: With Bulgaria's presidential run-off election scheduled for this Sunday, serious concerns remain over what appears to be a coordinated removal of major independent political satire, anti-disinformation and civic-commentary Facebook pages during the presidential election period. The affected pages, together with numerous smaller affiliated communities, collectively reached hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of users reached every month in a country of approximately 6 million people. The pages were suspended shortly before the first round of voting and, after being recreated, were suspended again on election day. The incident raises urgent questions about censorship, electoral integrity, platform accountability, and potential political interference during an ongoing democratic process. SOFIA, Bulgaria – More than a dozen of Bulgaria's most popular political satire and civic-commentary Facebook pages were simultaneously suspended by Meta shortly before the first round of the country's presidential election last weekend. After administrators created replacement pages that rapidly regained large audiences, those pages were suspended once again on election day. The case has drawn international political attention, as Members of the European Parliament have escalated the matter to the European Commission and requested clarification regarding possible political interference, censorship, and electoral integrity concerns. The controversy remains highly relevant as Bulgaria prepares for a decisive presidential run-off election this Sunday. The timing of the suspensions is particularly alarming given the broader political context. Former President Rumen Radev left office to establish his own political party, which subsequently secured a parliamentary majority. His former Vice President, Iliyana Yotova, is now seeking the presidency in the run-off election, meaning that the same political camp could further consolidate its influence across Bulgaria's key institutions. Several of the suspended pages were among the most vocal online critics of both Radev and Yotova. Their removal during an active election period has prompted concerns that independent scrutiny, satire, and political criticism are being restricted precisely when democratic debate is most necessary. The suspended pages were independent projects with no common ownership or centralized management. Despite their different focuses and administrators, they shared a commitment to political commentary, satire, civic engagement, historical education, media literacy, and opposition to Russian disinformation. Collectively, they reached hundreds of thousands of followers, while their content generated millions of views and interactions each month. In a country of approximately six million people, their disappearance from Facebook during an active election period had a significant impact on the online information environment. According to the administrators of the affected pages, none of the pages had received prior warnings, content removals, strikes, or notifications indicating violations of Meta's Community Standards. Administrators report that there were no indications in their administrative dashboards explaining the basis for the suspensions and no meaningful explanation has since been provided. Following the initial suspensions, administrators created replacement pages that rapidly regained hundreds of thousands of followers and readers within days. However, these newly created pages were removed once again on election day, affecting a broad network of political satire, civic commentary and public-interest content platforms. The pages covered a wide range of topics, including political satire, government accountability, history, media literacy, the war in Ukraine, and efforts to counter Russian propaganda and disinformation. Many of the affected pages were openly and strongly supportive of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, regularly challenging pro-Kremlin narratives, exposing disinformation campaigns, and promoting democratic and European values. One of the suspended projects was a history-focused podcast series, while several others regularly published analysis and commentary related to democratic governance, foreign influence operations, and information integrity. Among the affected pages were: ● BG Elves (49,000 followers) – anti-disinformation initiatives, political satire and fact-based civic commentary. ● Kopeikin (48,000 followers) – political satire and political commentary. ● Edin Zavet (25,000 followers) – history podcast focused on historical education, disinformation and public awareness. ● Puilo (22,000 followers) – political satire and public affairs commentary. Administrators of the affected pages state that the unprecedented timing and apparent coordination of the suspensions raise serious concerns. The simultaneous removal of numerous independent pages immediately before voting, followed by the removal of replacement pages on election day itself, has fueled concerns that this was not a routine moderation action but a coordinated takedown of prominent voices participating in public debate during a critical electoral period. The administrators emphasize that they currently have no evidence explaining why the pages were removed and are calling for full transparency from Meta regarding the decision-making process, applicable policies, and any communications that may have contributed to the suspensions. The case has attracted international political attention. Members of the European Parliament, including Hristo Petrov, Radan Kanev, and Sergey Lagodinsky, have reportedly escalated the matter to the European Commission and requested clarification as to whether the suspensions could represent political pressure against Bulgaria's democratic community, restrictions on freedom of expression, or interference with the electoral process. The controversy comes at a particularly sensitive moment in Bulgarian politics. Several of the suspended pages had published satirical content and criticism concerning presidential candidate Iliyana Yotova, the current Vice President of Bulgaria, and had consistently challenged pro-Russian political narratives and actors operating within the country. The unexplained removal of numerous independent, pro-democracy, pro-European and pro-Ukraine pages during an active election period has led many observers to question whether lawful political speech and criticism were unfairly restricted at a moment when public scrutiny and open debate are most essential. Civil society representatives and digital rights advocates are calling for full transparency from Meta regarding: ● The legal and policy basis for the suspensions. ● Whether any governmental requests, complaints, or communications contributed to the removals. ● Why no policy violations were communicated to page administrators. ● Why replacement pages were also removed on election day. ● Whether the suspensions affected the fairness and transparency of the electoral environment. The administrators of the suspended pages are urging Meta, the European Commission, the European Parliament, international media organizations, election observers, and free speech watchdogs to investigate the incident and ensure that digital platforms cannot be used, intentionally or unintentionally, to suppress lawful political speech during democratic elections. Media Enquiries Representatives of the affected pages are available for interviews and can provide: ● Screenshots of administrative dashboards showing the suspensions. ● Evidence regarding the absence of prior content violations or sanctions. ● Documentation related to the creation and subsequent removal of replacement pages. ● Statements from page administrators. ● Information regarding the referrals made to European institutions. Contact details: Karina Karagaeva (representative of BG Elves community)

Hello everyone, I am a student who recently moved to Sofia to study here. I’ve encountered an issue where stubborn landlords refuse to let me register my address on their property but I need an address in order to get my long term residency card. I’m trying my hardest to find a solution that won’t break the bank but I’m really struggling to. Relocation agencies ask for so much money per year and also because I am a foreigner I struggle to find an apartment that isn’t exorbitantly expensive. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
