ANNOUCEMENT Rule Change: "DM me" comments are no longer allowed

To combat scammers that rely on private interaction with users, we are no longer allowing comments asking users to message them privately for information or recommendations. Many scammers rely on this technique to prey on people. If you have a recommendation, advice, or information to share, please do so openly - which is the point of this subreddit. Some users try to skirt the rules this way, the "No Self-Promotion" rule, for example.

Please, be wary of anyone on Reddit trying to get you to communicate with them in private. Be cautious of anyone requiring you to dm them before they will give you advice or a recommendation.

I'm open to opinions and thoughts on this rule change, please feel free to voice your opinion.

What are the best "experience" gifts/gift cards around town?

Thinking of things that would be good for a date night or girls' night out. Things like rage room, axe throwing, unique pampering experiences, something cool I've never heard of yet...

Health & Wellness Looking for a good chronic illness / mold-informed doctor in the Austin area

• Upvotes

I’m looking for recommendations for a really good doctor.

I’m hoping to find a doctor who is knowledgeable about things like:

Mold exposure and potential related health effects !!! ( Really Important for me )
Chronic fatigue and complex chronic illness
Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses, when clinically indicated
Mycotoxins and environmental exposures
Dysautonomia, POTS, and other possible causes of exercise and heat intolerance
Nutritional deficiencies and other underlying contributors

I’m open to a conventional, integrative, or functional medicine doctor, as long as they take a thorough, evidence-based approach and genuinely want to help figure out what’s going on. **Ideally, they would accept health insurance**, since I want to find someone I can continue seeing without spending thousands of dollars out of pocket.

If you’ve personally had a good experience with someone who helped you navigate a complicated chronic illness, I would really appreciate your recommendations! Please share their name, specialty, location, and whether they accept insurance. Thank you! ❤️

Also open to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio doctors!!

Election night parties around town if Dems win?

I’m hoping and praying we have a blue wave here in Texas next week. That said, are there any parties planned/good places to go celebrate if that happens? Preferably north Austin/Cedar Park area as that is closer to where I live. TIA! 😊

Nature Primitive campsites with cell coverage?

I normally disconnect when camping, but we have a relative going through some health issues and I want to be accessible by cell just in case.

Are there any hike/bike-in primitive campsites in our area that get a few bars?

I do have the iphone Satellite text feature, but I want to be reachable at all times, not just when connected to satellite.

Entertainment Bars showing NFL red zone?

Hey y’all, my fantasy league group is looking for a bar that shows red zone this Sunday afternoon. If not red zone, a place with lots of TVs showing several different games. Any tips are appreciated! Thank you!

Discussion Austin Dating - All Apolitical or secret Republicans?

Preface: if you’re here to say “politics shouldn’t matter in a relationship” or “I can’t believe you would let someone’s political beliefs dictate your feelings” move on. It matters to me so I’m asking for advice from those who believe similarly.

I’m a mid 20s female (very liberal) who has recently moved to Austin and I’m starting to notice that 90% of the men on the apps just don’t put any political stance on their profile. In other cities I’ve lived in I would take that as them being secret republicans and really not give them my time of day. In Austin, I really can’t gauge if they are secret republicans or just all extremely apolitical / have no opinion or they are Democrats and just don’t have it listed (which is super odd to me). Why is it taboo in Austin to have your political stance on your profile? Bizarre to me

I’m curious what the other Democrat girlies out there have done to bring up this conversation and how it’s historically gone. I’ve been on dates here already where I bring it up on the first date and they just describe themselves as apolitical but with tons of republican friends but if they end up voting (which they said they probably won’t) they may vote blue.

Would just love to hear from other democrats on their experience dating in Austin and if it’s similar!!

EDIT 1 : so I guess the boys didn’t listen to my preface lmao did not expect this post to get so many people all wound up, so let me add additional context

- I have been on 2nd, 3rd dates with many who aren’t very political but still lean Democrat. I don’t cut it off because of this. Unless you are fully voting for trump I don’t factor that in too much in the beginning.
- I have lived in red and blue cities before, I am just surprised by the apolitical atmosphere of Austin I’ve never experienced before.
- I think it’s fair for me to consider this aspect to a man I would date more deeply in a state where abortion is fully illegal

EDIT 2 :
- So I see I’ve triggered a lot of moderate/conservative snowflakes in the comments! Shouldn’t have been super surprised knowing the apolitical climate I’ve felt here. Thank you for reminding me that most of yall are absolutely insane and I shouldn’t settle for moderate & apolitical men, appreciate every deranged comment reminding me of this💗 I realized the Joe Rogan-sphere was strong in Austin but appreciate yall reinforcing this narrative, I feel more aware for sure.

- I used to say in my profile a few years ago stuff like “don’t match with me if you voted for trump” but as many girlies in the comments have reminded me, men do lie so now i try to bring it up in more subtle ways. It’s scary out there!

- for those assuming im a miserable chronically single blue haired lib girl whose crying at your comments telling me “to go back home”, im doing quite fine for myself in Austin thank you very much. Have been asked out in person here more than any other city and am always the one to ultimately friendzone because of a lack of connection.

- lastly, it seems the comments have lost the plot of my original inquiry. I think if I had known this would blow up I would have phrased things a bit more eloquently but oh well yall now have my random thought I typed in 5 minutes. Thank you to all the girls responding and to the few not completely deranged apolitical moderate men explaining why they identify or exclude it on their profiles. While there are some of yall that seem completely normal, look at your fellow brothers in the comments and you will see why liberal women tend to steer clear (better safe than sorry).

south or south west austin apartment recommendations

my boyfriend and i are looking at getting a 1 bedroom apartment in south austin and we are in need of recommendations!

i am a senior at UT austin (and will be a bit of a super senior lol with plans to work as a paralegal post grad) and my bf is in a similar situation but at texas state. we want to find something in south austin for under 1,200 base rent.

i currently live in north austin and absolutely love my apartment, but my living with my current roommate doesnt feel sustainable and i want to be closer to school/be able to live with my partner.

looking for something that won't break the bank, no pests, allows 2 cats, relatively safe and preferably quiet area, and non scamming landlords. i don't need any fancy amenities or anything like that. i really lucked out with my current situation and i love that my complex is fairly small and feels like a neighborhood. i would really love that again but i know its unrealistic. bonus points if it has lots of trees/privacy from roads

- sincerely two college students who work their asses off and want a peaceful place to come home to. pls. lol

Hobbies & Activities Art classes for painting people/faces?

Post image
1 Upvotes

i’m a decent charcoal artist but always wanted to learn how to paint/draw faces especially with color. I’ve received no artistic training, I consider my charcoal art decent but I am in no way traditionally trained.

I love the style of mixed medium art/paintings like this. I am definitely not looking for a hyper realism class but would take it if it’s beginner oriented. Is there anywhere I can take art classes around here?

Started a sub just for Austin-area housing questions

Hi r/askaustin! We see a lot of great housing questions here so wanted to start r/AustinAreaRealEstate as a place where those conversations can go deeper.

If you’re looking to move neighborhoods, wondering if it’s a good time to buy or sell, or are just curious about the local market, we’re hoping to build a helpful community to discuss all things Austin area real estate!

Looking to get the Enhanced Photo ID through the library and was told to mail myself a post card

However, I’ve walked miles all over the city and nobody seems to carry postcards any longer. Most of the younger folks I’ve asked at stores don’t even know what they are. I’ve been here a few months but have yet to establish a permanent spot, and my friends are wary of me sending any mail to their places. My CA ID expired almost two months ago and now I’m sort of stuck. I have a part-time job and have been doing odd jobs as a couple of bigger projects I’m a part of are in financing limbo and I can’t seem to make anything work. Open to any ideas.

Is the ID you get at Sunrise Church as part of their homeless services the same as the library ID? Looking to start giving plasma, etc. to get on my feet more. Thanks.

ISP Any faster ways to get contractor quotes and check their records?

Recently moved to Austin and want some work done on the house. I’m spending a bunch of time trying to get quotes and looking at government records to screen contractors. I don’t like looking at the Google reviews. Is there any way to just speed up the process and find records faster than what I’m doing now?

Indoor activities

Got a trip to Austin planned this weekend Thursday thru Saturday and was mostly going to do outdoor activities but it’s going to rain apparently.

Anyone have any good indoor activities you enjoy in Austin? Which Museums are you favorite? Got the downtown library recommended to me so may check that out.

Thanks in advance!

Help with breaking lease

I live at the Milo and can’t take it anymore. Between the roaches the constant water shut offs, and the AI desk agents I want to break the lease without having to pay their horrible fees (it’s RPM).

Any lawyers out there who can help me?

Nightlife 30/40s weekday spots?

Checking out places around town where women in their 30s and 40s hang out during the week rather than just weekends.

Instead of noisy college bars or late-night clubs, looking for spots with a mature, welcoming vibe like cozy cocktail lounges, neighborhood wine bars, or lively patios where people go after work for happy hour or late nights.

Where are your favorite local weekday go-tos for this age range, and what days or times usually have the best atmosphere for striking up a friendly conversation?

Moving 24M, transferring to Austin, would appreciate any help finding the right neighborhood.

Hi, I'm 24M, and my work is transferring me to work in Northern Austin, I am from a rural town in PA. I have never been to the city. I am very excited to be moving, but I am lost as to an area to live in. I have a car, and plan to drive to work everyday. I would like to be able to walk to the more sociable areas as I don't love driving in the city if I am just going out for drinks or something- but I don't know if it is worth it if that means sitting in traffic every day while going to work. I would be starting over socially as well, so an area that is surrounded less by established families would be better (hopefully that makes sense) I make about 100k/yr and based on what I can find, there are a lot of options, just need help deciding where.

Moving Moving to Austin from Houston looking for an apartment south of 183

I'm posting this for a female friend who is not on reddit. She has a dog and will be looking for a 1BDR apartment for under $2K a month, we're thinking Hyde Park, East Austin, Tarrytown, or Barton Hills. Not sure how well the budget fits in those areas, but her priorities are that it is safe and the property is well maintained. Looking for general advice about the area or any particular apartments that folks want to call out. The Domain is possible but I'm not sure she wants to be quite that far north of the city.

Employment Looking for gigs / jobs during the day 8-5

Hi everyone. I’m a 30 year old single mom. I recently lost my job because I can’t work the hours anymore now that my kid is in school. I’ve been doing some catering as much as they need me but I still have 2-4 days a week sometimes that I really need be working.
I don’t want to put my work experience on here just in case someone I know comes across this.. and my work experience would very much give me away haha.
My kid’s dad is basically non existent. I’m struggling to make ends meet. If anybody has any gigs OR honestly even like a legit 8 or 9-5 job I would be so grateful to talk to you about it.. thank you in advance
