Tier List First year as a reader

Post image
49 Upvotes

From 1 book every 2 years to over 30 this year! Here's the tierlist. Intermezzo is easily top of the list. Please recommend some other titles if you feel the urge.

And now the how and why.

Basically, I got tired of doom scrolling. So last October I marched myself to the library and chose a random book (second chance convenience store). It wasn't because I wanted to read, it was simply to be on my phone less. Being a slow reader with a short attention span was no longer a bad thing but rather continued success- less time on my phone! And with that mindset it became easy.

The craziest thing is that there's basically zero overlap between my reading list and my friends' lists. That's what Reddit is for haha.

S Tier:

Wild dark shore by Charlotte McConaghy

Intermezzo by Sally Rooney

A short stay in Hell by Stephen L. Peck

Stoner by John Williams

Pianesi by Susan Clark

A Tier:

The count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Man search for meaning by Viktor E. Frankl

The three body problem by Cixin Liu

Death's end by Cixin Liu

Clara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro

Hum by Helen Phillips

I who have never known men by Jacqueline Harpman

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keys

B Tier

Spin by Charles Wilson

Shadow of The wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Moral's invention by Adolfo Bioy Casares

Moon of the crusted snow by Waubgeshig Rice

The Dark Forest by Cixin Liu

Dune by Frank Herbert

Angry queer Somali boy by Mohomed Abdul Karim Ali

They called me a lioness by Ahed Tamimi

C Tier

What I talk about when I talk about running by Haruki Murakami

Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

The metamorphosis by Franz Kafka

Foundation by Isaac Asimov

Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke

No country for old Men by Cormac McCarthy

D Tier

The second chance convenience store by Ho-Yeon Kim

Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer

Monthly Round Up 78-86/52 October 2026 wrap up

Posting a bit early because I’m unlikely to finish my current read before the end of the month, since I don’t quite feel like reading.

But October was an overall solid month of reading. 9 books total: 4 of them were rereads for spooky season. One was a powerful memoir, and another was a mildly underwhelming middle grade horror anthology. Another was a graphic novel I’ve been meaning to read for years. And the final two short stories have a spot on my favorite reads of 2026.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz (reread/audiobook): 4 ⭐️

Suffer a Witch by Joy McCullough (library book/audiobook): 4.75 ⭐️

Flamer by Mike Curato (TBR book): 3.5 ⭐️

Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe (reread/audiobook): 4.75 ⭐️

The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe (reread/audiobook): 4.75 ⭐️

The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe (reread/audiobook): 5 ⭐️

Don’t Turn Out the Lights edited by Jonathan Maberry (audiobook): 3.5 ⭐️

Mestra by Madeline Miller (audiobook): 5 ⭐️

Wicker by Ursula Wills (audiobook): 5 ⭐️

Progress Honeysuckle by Bar Fridman-Tell (41/52)

I grabbed this on a whim when searching on Libby for gothic horror reads to slip in before November, and I am wholly enchanted and fascinated! I cannot believe this is a debut novel.

It's still early going but I foresee a five star read. I know nothing at all of Welsh folklore, so the entire concept is brand new to me.

Progress How many books do you keep going at once?

I used to be a strict one at a time reader and recently started juggling three, a fiction, a nonfiction, and something lighter for before bed. It is working better than I expected and I finish more, not less. Curious how everyone else manages this. Are you monogamous with your current read or do you keep a little rotation going depending on mood?

Progress Book 213/750 (longterm goal): The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North

Post image
21 Upvotes

Harry August is born and then he dies and then he is born again with the memory of his past lives returning to him. In his 11th life, he receives a message that the world is ending sooner than expected. Harry makes it his mission to stop this from happening.

I had a lot of fun with this book. It had an interesting premise and I liked the characters a lot. Some of it seemed to not make a lot of sense if you stopped and thought about it to hard but I guess that's what happens when your story revolves around someone being repeatedly reborn. Its a bit slow to start but after it got going it was hard to put down

Progress 122/100 The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

It’s funny the first Hendrix book I read I didn’t really enjoy, but gave him another chance and I’d loved all the rest.
Until this one.
This was firmly in the meh category for me.

I really liked the storyline, I mostly liked the characters, and mostly liked how the twists and ending were done.

There are 6 girls. Each with a bad guy, and each with a story (all that resemble a famous slasher movie).
My complaint is how the details of each were provided.
We learn which girl goes with which bad guy and movie in small, indirect pieces. We kind of piece it together at first.
It’s not critical to the story which is which so why make it complicated?
We don’t learn the whole story of the main character until like a third of the way through the book.
Just saying it would’ve been nice to have a chart or something.
Maybe I’m just forgetful.

Monthly Round Up My October reads 62/52

#57: Revival - Stephen King (5/5)

Great story fantastic characters. Tragic, interesting and scary, definitely one of King’s best.

#58: Hallowe’en Party - Agatha Christie (3,5/5)

It was good, but it felt like it was repeating the same information a bit too much. I also thought it would have more to do with Halloween than it actually did.

#59: Dead Silence - S.A. Barnes (3/5)

It had some really good parts and it was pretty scary from time to time. It was brought down some by the juvenile dialogue and some of the stupid decisions the characters make.

#60: The Book of Cthulhu - Ross E. Lockhart (3,5/5)

A short story collection containing 27 different stories all by different authors. It was a real mixed bag for me. While some storys were great, others were really bad.

#61: Slewfoot - Gerald Brom (4/5)

Really loved the folklore and the characters. Some of the interactions happening between the spirits felt a bit too out there.

#62: The Silent Patient - Alex Michaelides (4/5)

It had me intrigued for most of it. It lost some of its steam towards the end because someone indirectly spoiled it for me by comparing it to another book.

What’s your thoughts on these books?

Question/Advice This challenge changed my phone habits more than my reading

I started the yearly goal to read more, which I did, but the bigger shift was how much less I reach for my phone in idle moments now. The book filled the gap the scrolling used to. Did not expect a reading target to be a screen time fix. Has the challenge changed any habits for you beyond just the number of books?

Tier List 85/52. I replaced social media & TV with reading, only for books to completely expand my perspective and ambition and become more relaxed.

I normally read 40-50 books per year, but in 2026 I hit a stretch that send me into overdrive. This spring I hit "Normal People," "The Road" and a few others that made me feel like I haven't about books since I was a kid reading Harry Potter at summer camp. I've been gobbling them up, chasing that sense of wonder and fascination and excitement. The reveal in "Eileen" gave me an intense spine tingle. From there, I stopped being intimidated by the "weirder" titles -- in fact I've been seeking them out -- and stopped procrastinating some of the beloved stuff I've always put off.

What am I missing? I’m really interested to learn about less-known authors and under-appreciated books. Please also let me know if I should check out any smaller publishing presses.

Progress 53/60 - Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin

Post image
43 Upvotes

This is my second experience with James Baldwin, having previously read The Fire Next Time, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have to say, I think Baldwin might be my favorite prose writer of any author I've encountered. His writing is simply beautiful, and Giovanni's Room only reinforced that opinion. He does not miss.

That said, this is a very different work. It’s about a man in Paris who is in a serious relationship with a woman, begins an affair with a man. It’s a very short but heartbreaking  tragedy about love, shame, identity, and the destructive consequences of denying your true self. It’s about the confrontation between who we are and who we think we are, or who we think society wants us to be.

There is a keen examination, in particular, of just how much people are willing to sacrifices for the promise of stability and respectability. That tension between the lives characters really want and the ones society expects of them, is this constant background against the whole work. Baldwin writes this beautifully, as only he could. There's a great deal of psychological depth packed into a relatively short work, and Baldwin manages to communicate it with extraordinary elegance. This is a classic for a reason.

If I had to distill its central message into a single sentence, it would be this: You cannot run from yourself.

Review/Discussion 82/104 Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter

Post image
4 Upvotes

My third Franklin and when I saw it on the discount shelf I had that instant feeling of ‘this book is mine now. I may be a different person after going through it. No one can take it away.’

Small town. Cop alone against everything that small town life can throw at you. Everyone knows everyone. One diner. Everyone has some long history with you and him and her. Hard to hide. Memories that bear down on you like a meteor with you just touching the wrong hand, hearing the wrong voice. The characterizations of Silas and Larry in this small landscape are supremely skilled. We all know that kind of friend, that kind of loss, the puzzlement of time gone so quickly by. Why did we miss that time with that person?

And in this book lies the most impressive drawing of an outsider, a misunderstood young man living his life like he deserved it all. Not racism, though we have racism here. Just the wrong moments just kept driving him into a further isolation and silence. And no one had the courage to reach out.

Not a book easily forgotten.

i'm on my third time through a comfort read and i know i'm supposed to be working toward 52 but honestly it's hard to let go of something that just hits different. wondering if other people have this problem or if i'm just procrastinating on finishing my tbr pile.

Is the 2027 list out yet? I can’t find it. I’m done with the 2026 list. Wondering on any mini challenges for holidays?

Review/Discussion Tier List Template

How are ya'll creating your tier lists? I'm familiar with tiermaker, but is there a particular template that has a huge catalog of new and classical book covers already on it? Are are you manually adding the images yourselves?
