Off Topic [OT] SatChat: Will you be participating in NaNoWriMo this year? What will you write about? (New here? Introduce yourself!)

SatChat! SatChat! Party Time! Excellent!

Welcome to the weekly post for introductions, self-promotions, and general discussion! This is a place to meet other users, share your achievements, and talk about whatever's on your mind.

Suggested Topic

Will you be participating in NaNoWriMo this year? Why or why not?

NaNoWriMo is National Novel Writing Month and takes place in November. The goal is to spend the month just writing and track your progress along the way.

There are lots of helpful resources on their website, but as usual we'll do some NaNoWriMo prep right here in /r/WritingPrompts for your convenience (and fun) too.

Why should you participate?

Not participating?

  • Why not? Also, if you are or not, weigh in and give your thoughts on other user's plans. If they need help deciding, maybe your feedback will help!

What will you write about in NaNoWriMo?

  • Write a tl;dr (too long; didn't read) of what you plan to write about. Try to sell us on it in one sentence. Still have multiple ideas? List them too.

More to Talk About

  • New here? Introduce yourself! See the sticky comment for suggested intro questions
  • What are you doing to keep busy while self-isolating or in quarantine? Click here for some resources
  • Have something to promote? (Books, subreddits, podcasts, etc.)
  • Suggest us topics for future SatChats!

Avoid outright spam (don't just share, chat) and not for sharing full stories

I certainly hope I'm going to be participating, given that I've spent the better part of the past month planning out my story and schedule for the writing, so I'm mostly just preening the details and waiting for November to start now.

As for what I'll be writing about, I'll be expanding one of my prompt responses into a full story. Unless I suddenly diverge from my plans in a very big way, the story is going to be set in a superhero dystopia where heroes and villains run the government, and have effectively created a caste system with them at the top and those without superpowers at the bottom.

I'm sure all the publishing firms will be chomping at the bit to get their hands on it once it's done... Well, it's more likely this will just be the test bed for me doing a more structured writing style than the unreliable freeform style I've been running with for the past few years, but we can always hope.

Test runs are always fun! If I didn't do those, I wouldn't have found my style ๐Ÿ™‚ Good luck!

Absolutely! I'm also new here, but I've been writing for a while- mostly I just share stuff with friends and don't post 'public' stuff but I figure, why not? Honestly, it's this subreddit that's inspired me to try, which is nice! I can give NaNo a try. I doubt my first work will be fantastic, but hey, everyone has a jumping-off point.

Welcome! Yeah, there is also a benefit to posting publicly, because you can get feedback on your writing and see what works well or what you may need to improve!

I've been writing on and off for the past ten years, but r/WP has gotten me to be a lot more consistent about it. I've done Nano twice before in my life, but have never wanted to go back and revise/edit the resulting word piles.

This year, I'm hoping to write a fantasy story inspired from Asian folklore about an evil archer who shoots down nine of the heavenly suns (in Chinese mythology, there used to be ten suns in the form of three-legged crows who took turns flying across the sky). My story will center around a girl who finds one of the injured/fallen suns and follow her quest to return them to the skies.

I haven't ever done extensive planning for Nano, but I'm doing more than usual this time. I really hope that I end up with something I'm excited to edit and continue working on!

Cool idea, specially using a concept from Chinese mythology! Hopefully the extra planning helps you more this time! What is stopping you from going back to the old ones you wrote, though?

I've lurked on reddit for a while, but coming back to writing got me to register so I can respond to prompts. I started writing stories in high school but dropped off in the whirlwind of getting established in life.

I do plan to take part in NaNo. I plan to write an urban fantasy, about a mage whose inheritance comes with debts attached to criminal enterprises, and how far he'd go for freedom.
