Hey Leonardo! You and the rest of the cast have done an absolutely incredible job bringing the show to life. It is an and will be forever known as an astounding piece of film art. I wanted to ask what has been your most memorable moment behind the scenes, or what your favorite and most enjoyable scene to film? And who of the cast is the biggest jokester on set? Thank you for taking the time to do this! You’re are awesome, and I wish you the best in your career going forward!
204
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Hey there! Thanks for the question. I believe it is a fantastic work of film art as well. So grateful to be part of it. My fav scene has to be the bird scene, it really showed me who Felix is in private and so much of my character was based on that moment.
The biggest jokester has to be Thandie. She's hilarious! Although Ptolemy and Luke Hemsworth as a riot as well.
101
u/Lagotta Mar 24 '20
Luke Hemsworth as a riot as well.
Well humor is one of his core drives, you might say.
2
u/LandoMCFC Mar 25 '20
That is an awesome answer! It is a beautiful sequence and it absolutely is a huge scene in revealing the true nature of Felix and solidifies what kind of human being he is. I can totally see why it is a highlight and milestone in your development of Felix as a character!
I’ve heard now from a few sources that Thandie is quite the character, so it’s great to hear you back that up too. I’m sure those were fun times shooting many scenes with her and having Felix be such a major supporting character of Maeve as a whole!
Thank you again Leonardo, for taking the time to do this AMA! All of us cannot wait to see what the rest of this season has in store for us! Cheers!

You and Thandie Newton had a lot of scenes together in season one. There's one particularly great one when Felix guides Maeve around the Mesa and she gets to see the inner workings of her world. A string quartet version of "Motion Picture Soundtrack" is very prominent, so I was wondering what it's like to act and be directed in scenes where there's a lot of music and very little dialogue. Hope to see more of you this season!

u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Great question! We don't know when they are going to do a scene with a lot of music usually, but we know filming that scene was special because it was such a pivotal moment in showing her the underworking of the park, and essentially her. It was defiantly a heartbreaking moment.
41
u/fatfrost Mar 25 '20
Great fucking scene. You were great in it but man she sold it! Confusion to wide-eyes wonder turn steely determination. My favorite sequence of the show. Hope you’re in more episodes this season.

Leo! Big fan :) You were one of the first asian faces I saw in a contemporary film growing up. I know you have done a lot for the Asian American community from being the spokes person for HBO APA visionaries to giving so much time speaking on panels, podcasts, and various event. On top of all that you are an amazingly genuine person/father.
Felix who seemed like a nobody at work, went to being caught up in crazy circumstance on WW. You went from a stuggling actor sleeping in central park to someone who has had an amazing career and now using your time and energy to genuinely give back to make a better world for us and for you family. I wonder how you invision continuing to do so through your work and personal life. What have you learned and how do you hope to cont in this current climate.
82
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Hi! Great question. I am very flattered by your support. I have learned that we do not go through life alone. We must support each other and find way to uplift. Through these dark times, we must find light in our lives to share, to radiate.
I hope to continue to be a beacon of hope and light throughout my career. To embody passion and integrity in everything I do.
As the world changes because of COVID-19, I don't know how my industry will change, but I aim to always be focused on being a positive role model no matter how my industry changes. There will always be a need to amplify the voices of those that are under represented. That is a life long journey for me. Much love, Leo
1
Apr 13 '20
Thank you your work already amplifying the voices or quiet presence in WW of those under represented
122
u/bthaissa Mar 24 '20
Hi, thanks for doing this AMA. What's your favorite thing about the show? I love Felix and I'm looking forward to seeing more of you on my screen either on WW or other projects.
161
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Thank you for the questions! My favorite thing about the show is the quality of storytelling. I am always so floored by the way they unfold the story and the questions/themes they ask. Plus, it's a dream to work with this calibre of talent on a day to day basis. Greatness fosters greatness. I hope you see me in many other prestigious projects in the future as well!
1
Apr 13 '20
I see you doing something important. Perhaps a documentary or awareness campaign or app for children or a movie about the hidden family scapegoat abuse/system, the secret shaming blaming bullying of one kid in a family. The hidden foundation of violence and inequality in this world is related to the hidden hierarchical family scapegoat system. Children like Gabriel Fernandez and Anthony Valdez were family scapegoat kids.
57
u/JepMZ Mar 24 '20
Hi Leonardo! I love your character! I haven't seen much interviews so forgive me if you seen this already. I saw your YouTube video interview with your mom (so sweet, btw) and learned you went New York for drama school. Wow! You you had it all planned out it seems.
How often do you meet or know other Asian actors/classmates at school? Were there a lot of Asian colleagues or it's just a few?
110
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Great question. I am always making an effort to connect with other Asian actors because there are so few of them working. There were no other male Asian actors in my drama school, but hopefully things are changing. We are stronger together.
29
u/JepMZ Mar 25 '20
Oh! Oh my! Thank you for answering. Yeah, I hope things have changed since then. I hope you inspire more asians who dream of acting to come forward and for the industry to open their eyes to the potential talent they can bring in this huge realm of storytelling
And I got to say, I've never had direct communication with a star before. I'm so awstruck!
3
u/unklejoe23 Mar 25 '20
2 big victories in that department were The Terror season 2 on AMC which was an excellent in Japanese culture and their ghost stories as well the struggle of the intermittent camps. George Takei was able to play an elder and I know it meant the world to him to represent this on such a large platform and audience. Also the way Parasite dominated The Oscars this year is sure to draw attention to movies ,actors, and directors that may have never been given this chance to cross over to American mainstream audience.
91
u/physi_cyst Mar 24 '20
To what extent would you call Felix the only inherently and truly good-hearted human character in the show? Are there others?
Edit: also hi Leonardo, and thanks for doing this ama!
165
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Hi! Thanks for the question. I would say that's pretty true description, however, you haven't seen the whole show yet, so it's hard to absolutely say that. In the midst of so much darkness, I am proud to radiate some light in the world.
18
u/physi_cyst Mar 24 '20
Thanks for your response, so cool to hear from you! For sure, the rest of S3 still has a lot to offer. You're right - so far you have been one of the very few who helps me keep my faith in humanity ;-)
8
u/Lagotta Mar 24 '20
I don't think Elsie is so bad?
She is generally kind. She seems to want to do the right thing.
That three bulb flashlight is annoying, but that's not her choice in the Westworld.

Hey Leonardo! I met you and took a picture with you in Iceland under that huge waterfall! You were really cool and accommodating to take a picture with me! Still cant believe I ran into you there out of all the places in this big ol world! Just wanted to say thank you again. How did you enjoy the rest of your Iceland trip?
65
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Hey! What a fantastic trip! I certainly remember that pic! I loved every minute of being in Iceland, even the 11pm sunlight! Hope to run into you again soon. Say hi!
73
u/Urvile0 Mar 24 '20
How are you faring in the lock down? How much do we get to see you this season?
135
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Thank you for asking. We are doing well. We are all healthy and we are lucky that we have enough space for the kids to run around in. I hope watching Westworld gives you a little escape during this uncertain time. Would love to hear your thoughts on the season!

u/Urvile0 Mar 24 '20
Love it so far, with the one exception. The GOT cameo bumbed me out!
I got teary eyed when I saw you, in S3E2...

Hey Leonardo! Your story and journey as an actor is incredibly inspiring to so many aspiring Asian actors. What advice would you give to the hungry actors out there?
208
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Thanks for the love. We gotta keep supporting each other. Keep going. Have faith in yourself. Stay hungry for good work. You can change the world.
4
u/MrMango786 Mar 25 '20
I loved you and that other panel at the Medtronic AIM event in 2018. Thanks for being inspiring and so great.
83
u/ilikepugs Mar 24 '20
What aspects of your own personality to you bring to the character of Felix? What aspects of Felix are completely different from yourself in real life?
124
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Hi! Well, I think that I bring a lot of my own empathy to Felix. He's a very compassionate and kind character. There is a lot of myself in him.
19
u/PlaceboJesus Mar 24 '20
My question was going to be if you're half as lovely in real life as your portrayal of Felix?
From the scene with the bird through to helping Maeve escape, you gave an absolutely charming performance, and I think that empathy you mentioned was the key.
19
u/Repulsive_Bicycle Mar 24 '20
I remember seeing you in The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants! It was so cool to see you in Westworld - I recognized you right away. I had to tell my husband that you were very memorable as a weird nerd (who was also ripped) dating a girl in a hit teen movie about magical pants. Anyway!
What was your favorite scene to film in Westworld?
Did anything change for you when you were cast on a huge HBO show? When do actors feel like they “made it”?
What is your favorite food?
31
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Hey! Brian McBrian was such a fun role to play as well! Sisterhood forever! I did know that being cast in Westworld was a game changer for me. As far as feeling like you have "made it", I think it's never a "made it" moment. I'm always striving for better, but I do take time to say "well done" to myself after I've done every audition. It's a slog, but moment like this make it worth it.
48
u/dreamrock Mar 24 '20
I notice that Felix and Sylvester are well known cat names. Cats are known to be familiars to witches. Maeve is referred to as a witch in Shogun World. What do you make of that? Also, very happy to see you back!
47
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
That has certainly crossed my mind... :-) Thank you for the support. I'm also very glad to be back!
50
u/IDontH8myPP Mar 24 '20
Hi Leonardo, I'm curious to know what your initial reaction was to reading the script for season 1?
74
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
I was so excited to play this part! I didn't really understand the depth in which the show was going to explore humanity, but am certainly glad that it did!
40
Mar 25 '20
The funniest moment of the show so far was when Felix questioned his humanity after finding out Bernard was a host. Did that scene go down as it was exactly written in the script, or was some improv involved?
57
u/leonardonam Mar 25 '20
That moment was highlighted but I used improv and that's what made it into the show.
7
Mar 25 '20
Awesome! That moment's humor will always be a special part of the show. Thank you for that, and thank you for answering so many questions!
45
u/willmiller82 Mar 24 '20
Which costume that you've gotten to wear was your favorite. Always got a kick out of how you changed it up for each part of the park you were in.
77
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
I gotta say, I still love the latex outfit we wore in the lab. It's so iconic.
84
Mar 24 '20
Hi Leo!
Will we see the “real” Felix at any point this season, or is Fake Felix in E2 all we’re getting?
112
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
You will have to keep watching to find out! Would love to hear your thoughts on the season!
34
u/SorrowOfMoldovia Mar 24 '20
Are the technician costumes comfortable? They look very hot to me.
59
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
They are uncomfortable because you sweat so much in those under those lights. But there is something about being in those costumes that helps create the character as well.
56
Mar 24 '20
Hello! Hope you are staying safe! What was it like working with Thandie Newton?
84
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
She's an absolute dream to work with. A very generous actor and a fantastic soul to work with.
11
u/Lagotta Mar 24 '20
They look like they have great chemistry, I think their scenes are some of the best.
3
u/unklejoe23 Mar 25 '20
She has this aura about her I just fall in love with her. She's incredible in this role the beauty and humanity she's brought to the character of Maeve is definitely emmy worthy
17
u/VocationFumes Mar 24 '20
Do you watch Westworld yourself? If so, is it your favorite show? What is your favorite if not Westworld. I love the show and I think it's currently the best thing on television, you are amazing in it as well, was very happy to see you back in S3
30
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
I love Westworld! I'm such a huge fan of the show itself. I watch it as they air, so I'm part of the viewership. I think it makes for a more fun time. Thank you for the support. I am always so humbled by peoples love of the show and of Felix.
47
u/optimisticpsychic Mar 24 '20

78
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
I never worked with him on set. :-( But I did hear some great advice from him. "Don't even bring it to the make-up trailer" - referring to your troubles from home. And vice versa. Leave on set what happens on set, and leave at home what happens at home.

u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20

How much did you know about how Felix’s storyline fit into the larger puzzle during filming? What kind of direction were you given?
23
u/leonardonam Mar 24 '20
Thank you for the support. I didn't get a lot of info about how it all fit in together, but I did have a couple moments with the creators who told me little gems about what direction to go in. Hamlet.

What’s it like to be a part of such an awesome and creative group of actor/producers/designers etc and to be a part of one of HBO’s biggest shows budget-wise

Out of weakness comes the source of true strength. I'd like so much to see a glimpse of Felix growing on it. Don't we all deserve it? :)))

At 12:30 of the latest episode, you and another tech are seen working on Maeve. Was that Jeremie Harris?

I probably shouldn’t have opened this comment section before watching episode 2 but that’s my fault. I just rewatched season 2 to get caught back up and I have to say that your contribution to the show is spectacular. Your ability to portray Felix as a beacon of humanity in a setting so opposed to it made for some great TV. Keep up the good work!

This won't raise your stats. You were placed as butcher and will always be one. I don't know what you think this will do for you... You can never be more than what you are.

Welcome to r/Westworld. You perform Felix marvelously. Theambiguity you portray toward Maeve in The Winter Line really forced me to question the nature of my reality for a moment. Well done.
Are you a 'fan' of Westworld? What other media do you enjoy? What and who have influenced you the most?
Stay safe. Hope to see more of you and Ptolemy together soon.
